Absolutely the most amazing Olympic event I've ever seen. Phelps is going to destroy every record he gets near.

The Chinese gymnastic girls don't look 16 at all. I didn't really believe the story until i saw them. Oh but the Chinese gov. has all the necessary documents to say they're 16. Riiiiiight.

Did you hear Bela Karolyi talking to Costas last night and stone cold calling out the Chinese on this, referring to them as "14 or 15 year olds" and then not backing away from it when Costas asked him to elaborate?
Have you seen any of those things on how those Chinese gymnasts come to reach that point? I think the Chinese can credibly claim to have the paperwork proving their age because we all know that the government literally removes the child from the womb and whisks it away to a training camp. I guess they're basically chosen at age 3 or 4, leave their families and only see them once or twice a year, and train nonstop to prep for these competitions? I guess if you practice a move every day for 10 years, you get pretty good at it. Could you imagine going through all of that, essentially pissing away your entire childhood, and then not winning the gold? Wow would that suck.
Our women's team captain, Alicia Sacrasomethingorother has got to feel like a royal turd. She's pretty much gone out and laid an egg in the events I've seen her in. Oh well.
A good friend of mine used to swim competitively in college and was gushing about Phelps before the Olympics, about how he wasn't just better than the others, he was leaps and bounds better than the rest of the pack, and I was like, "Yeah, I'm sure he's good, blah, blah, blah." Boy, I did not give that dude the credit he deserves. 5 events, 5 gold medals, 5 world records -- some of them by enormous margins. Guy is crazy good...
Re: Olympics
Re: Chinese Gymnasts - of course those girls are underage. For God's sake, they don't even look CLOSE to 16. But it's really not surprising. This is a government that heavily censors and restricts peoples' basic freedoms, that even murders its own people without so much as a word... you'd expect them to have integrity in a gymnastics competition?.. They can build all the fanciest stadiums and put on the most opulent ceremonies that they want, but nothing will ever change the fact that, when it's all said and done, the country is still run by a bunch of thugs.
Re: Phelps - that guy is UNREAL. Best swimmers on the planet in the lanes next to him, and it's not even close... It's mind-boggling to think that the best olympic atheletes in the entire history of the human race have ended up with 9 gold medals...and he'll probably finish up his career with like 20!
Re: Alicia Sacramone - I felt so sorry for her. I can only imagine how devastating that was for her... She choked out there, yes, but I hope that everyone recognizes the humanity in her and no one holds it against her.
Re: Shawn Johnson - This young woman is wise beyond her years. I couldn't be more proud of the way she represents her country, not because of the great things she does in competition but because of her humility and grace, even when things don't work out. She competed fiercly, but then even as the US team came up short, she was supporting her teammates, smiling and telling the media how proud she was of them, congratulating the other team... And you know it's not an act with her.
kid showed more heart out there - at 16 - than many "adults" ever do in their lives.

I certainly don't. Tough situation, to be sure. Nothing worse than failing to do something that you know you can do well. She's probably done all of those things hundreds, if not thousands, of times in her career. Just happened that she strung together those few random misses. She'll be OK, I think.

Re: Olympics
Phelps is a god among men out there. Christ chex, he's obliterated everybody he's raced against, even with his eyes closed in one of the events where his goggles filled up with water.

ohh god ya, its the worst kept secret there, right behind the lip-syncing girl in the opening ceremonies (who's about two years younger than the women's gymnastic team, funny enough). next games their team should be banned.
Re: Olympics
i think they're going to award the AMerican WOmen's GYmnastics team the gold.
Those girls on the chinese team look WAY WAY WAY under 16. They're already reporting it on Drudge, in fact.
fucking cheaters. never trust the chinese gov't. or the party members for that matter.

chill out, nobody's going to do anything. nobody can prove they are not 16 (or 15 turning 16 this year) because if needed the chinese govt will provide any documentation requested.

i find the summer Olympics incredibly boring.
there is not one sport that i am in the least interested in.
winter olympics are so much better.
Re: Olympics
^amen to that. but i gotta admit, i've been really getting into some of the sports this year. swimming, gymnastics, and archery.
Re: Olympics
i hope he gets another gold tonight!
Re: Olympics
Ameri-cuh! FUCK YEAH!! Comin' again to win the motherfucking golds, yeah!
Re: Olympics
dude, Nastia's performance was so goddamn stunning. I've never jumped out of my seat before at gymnastics until she stuck the landing on the beam. just nuts. She absolutely destroyed the competition, even with judges that early on seemed to score her more rigidly than the rest of the pack. Fuckin A. That was mental. just mental.

+1. Those judges were totally shortchanging her at the beginning.
She's pretty goddamn stunning herself, too. ;)

^^as an aside, who names their kid something that close to "nasty?" My wife and I ended up just referring to Sean-John and NastyGirl all night -- much easier.

(but yes, its all over the media here...no one is happy with how we've performed thus far. we just don't fund our athletes well enough, though after this that might just change. for gods sake, cuba is kicking our ass in the medal count. we are still predicted to crack the top 20 for medals, however...)

i really really hope you are smarter than this post, because otherwise obama's in deep shit - i thought you were the only bright one in his camp... until now...
Anastasia "Nastia" Valeryevna Liukin was born on October 30, 1989 in Moscow, Russian SFSR, USSR. She is the only child of two former Soviet champion gymnasts: 1988 Summer Olympics gold medalist Valeri Liukin and 1987 event World Champion in rhythmic gymnastics, Anna Kotchneva. Her nickname Nastia is a Russian diminutive for Anastasia.
The family moved to the United States when Liukin was two and a half years old, after the breakup of the Soviet Union, and settled first in New Orleans before moving to Texas. In 1994, Valeri Liukin teamed with another former Soviet champion athlete, Evgeny Marchenko, to open the World Olympic Gymnastics Academy (WOGA) in Plano.
