GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) -- After flirting with retirement for years, Brett Favre means it this time. The Green Bay Packers quarterback quit after a 17-season career in which he dazzled fans with his grit, heart and rocket of an arm. "I know I can still play, but it's like I told my wife, I'm just tired mentally. I'm just tired," Favre told ESPN's Chris Mortensen in a voice mail message. Tuesday's surprise move comes after the 38-year-old three-time MVP set several league records, including most career touchdown passes, in one of his most successful seasons. Coach Mike McCarthy said Favre informed him of the decision by telephone Monday night. "He said it was time for him to hang up the cleats," McCarthy said at a news conference Tuesday afternoon. "He's mentally tired, with all the little things that go into everyday preparation." Favre's agent, Bus Cook, also learned of his decision Monday night. "Nobody pushed Brett Favre out the door, but then nobody encouraged him not to go out that door, either," Cook told The Associated Press by phone from his Hattiesburg, Miss., office. Packers general manager Ted Thompson thanked Favre for 16 years of wonderful memories with the team. "His accomplishments are legendary," Thompson said. "And it's the passion with which he played that made everyone a Brett Favre fan." The team hasn't said when Favre might address the media. Favre led the Packers to the NFC championship game in January, but his interception in overtime set up the New York Giants' winning field goal. "If I felt like coming back -- and Deanna (Favre's wife) and I talked about this -- the only way for me to be successful would be to win a Super Bowl," Favre told ESPN. "To go to the Super Bowl and lose, would almost be worse than anything else. Anything less than a Super Bowl win would be unsuccessful." Last season, Favre broke Dan Marino's career records for most touchdown passes and most yards passing and John Elway's record for most career victories by a starting quarterback. He retires with 5,377 career completions in 8,758 attempts for 61,655 yards, 442 touchdowns and 288 interceptions. "He was the prototypical gun-slinger type," said Marv Levy, Pro Football Hall of Fame coach. "He's the type of guy where, 'Oh, what's he throwing into that crowd for?' But he had intuition, toughness, resilience." Hall of Fame quarterback Troy Aikman wondered if Favre's decision was final. "As the season gets closer, I wouldn't be surprised at all if he changes his mind," said Aikman, a Fox analyst who played 12 years with the Dallas Cowboys. The news stunned many. "I was surprised when I heard it this morning," former Packers general manager Ron Wolf said. "He played with such a great passion. He must have figured he no longer had that passion, and it was time to get out." Even Favre's teammates didn't see it coming. "I just saw it come across the TV," Packers wide receiver Koren Robinson said, when reached on his cell phone by The Associated Press. In his final season, Favre also extended his quarterback-record streak of consecutive regular-season starts to 253 games -- illustrating his trademark toughness. Add the playoffs, and Favre's streak stands at 275. In the past several offseasons, Favre's indecision about his football future became a winter tradition in Wisconsin, with Cheeseheads hanging on his every word. Unlike after the 2006 season -- when Favre choked up in a television interview as he walked off the field in Chicago, only to return once again -- nearly everyone assumed he would be back next season. It was a remarkable turnaround from 2005, Favre's final season under former head coach Mike Sherman, when he threw a career-worst 29 interceptions as the Packers went 4-12. Surrounded by an underrated group of wide receivers who proved hard to tackle after the catch, Favre had a career-high completion percentage of 66.5. He threw for 4,155 yards, 28 touchdowns and only 15 interceptions. Before the Packers' Jan. 12 divisional playoff game against Seattle, Favre told his hometown newspaper that he wasn't approaching the game as if it would be his last and was more optimistic than in years past about returning. "For the first time in three years, I haven't thought this could be my last game," Favre told the Biloxi (Miss.) Sun Herald. "I would like to continue longer." But Favre finished the season on a sour note, struggling in subzero temperatures in a 23-20 overtime loss to the New York Giants in the NFC championship game. Afterward, Favre was noncommittal on his future. McCarthy said he wanted Favre to take a step back from the season before making a decision. Now he has -- to walk away. "The Packers owe him a tremendous debt of gratitude," Thompson said. "The uniqueness of Brett Favre his personality, charisma and love of the game -- undoubtedly will leave him as one of the enduring figures in NFL history."

Its the begining of March... I get the feeling he will change his mind by training camp

Re: Brett Favre is tired - cya

possible, but i wouldnt blame him if he did retire. He has accomplished everything he can, and it would be a shame to see him come back after the season he had last year, and then end up 9-7 or something, go out on top of your game when ever possible.

always better to leave people asking for more than being pushed out the door

I am a huge fan and am furious wiht what I just read...Favre has asked the packers for a release so he can sign on with another team...They refused and said he can come back and be Rodger backup..

what a bunch of idiots....do they not realize that favre was a field goal away from the superbowl last year....

Re: Brett Favre is tired - cya

I am so sick and tired with the news reporters bashing Brett Favre for wanting to come back and play. Guys like him do not come around that often. We should cherish times like this. Great quaterbacks don't come around that often.

GREEN BAY was a field goal away until FAVRE threw the ball directly to the Giants defensive back

he also played his two worst games of the year in the two biggest games of the year. first ballot hall of famer yeah, but he has been a pain in the ass for how many off seasons in a row?

its time to walk away.. now if he forces his way back in and plays like he did the few seasons before the 2007 season.. he is going to look like even more of an ass. sometimes athletes really need to know when to sit down and retire, and STAY retired

You have to give favres some credit for last year sucess (over 4000 yards, 30+tds). Watch out steve there is heavy rumors that he will be wearing pewter and red whcih could be announced as soon as this afternoon.

I'm not saying that he is a bad QB, he is just past his prime... 1 out of the past 5 years was he really any good

I really doubt he will be here.. but who knows, maybe the Bucs will trade for or acquire the rights to another QB thats retired and has no desire to play in Tampa, lol

^^^If they aquire Favre that will only give them 6 qbs on the roster LOL...I think gruden is losing it.

i agree he past his prime but have always been a huge fan of his and would love to see him play for the bucs. i think he is better then garcia.

yeah, he is better than Garcia, of course, he has super bowl wins, mvp, and is going to the hall of fame.. BUT, training camp starts tomorrow, there is no way he will be able to learn the play book.. its just a ridiculous move to make if the Bucs grab him.. but gruden has a hard on for every qb that becomes available.. well, that and idiots with legal issues, lol

Re: Brett Favre is tired - cya

i hope green bay is really shitty this year. i'm pretty sick of the favre talk, but this story needs an ending like, "Green Bay sucks, Favre wins." I'll even settle for "Green Bay Sucks, Favre Sucks, ESPN = a bunch of suckers."

enjoy him. Let the Pats D knock him senseless

this cracked me up in the comments:
Dear Brett, We the New York Media are excited about your arrival to New York. We will analyze every move you make, every step you take. However, we would like to warn you what this means to your play on the field and your "gunslinging" ways. When your INT ratio per game reaches between 2 and 3, we will crucify you. You will then go from "legend- big ole' kid who loves to play" to "old washed up drama queen." Until that point we love you and welcome!!!! Love, the New York Media.
favre is old tho? is he really gonna be ready by start of season - witha new team structure etc?

#1060024Post 31 of 49

Re: Brett Favre is tired - cya

it's still the west coast offense. it's still brett farve. he has something to prove now, especially with the pack treating him the way they did and the whole media fiasco surrounding it all. i imagine he'll come out guns blazing. does he have anyone to throw to, and can their defense stop anyone is my question.

#1060027Post 32 of 49

Re: Brett Favre is tired - cya

brett favre is over imo.

the majority of his passes are just hail marys, where the receiver has to work his ass off in order to catch it... and 90% of the time, brett gets the credit for it all.

do i still enjoy watching him play? of course.

#1060028Post 33 of 49

Re: Brett Favre is tired - cya

donty forget we have a great coach in mangenious.

he worked under bellicheck for most of his life (started as a 17 year old ball boy)

he is a brilliant defensive schemer who did a lot with a little over his tenure. penningtons injuries and lack of strong arm are what destroyed this franchise over the last 8 years.

It would've been nice to have #4 here in Central Florida! The offense would've been easier! I would just dump the whole qb roster. Trade Garcia to the Bears!!!
