Re: why i love baseball continued
wow, tony la russa is being a dickhead to pujols for no reason. i know he's the manager for the all-star game and he can play who he wants, but why didn't he let pujols play AT ALL last night? personally, i think pujols has a right to be upset. his manager ignored him the whole game and then bashed him in the press saying "pujols can be upset if he wants to. it doesn't matter. this is america. there are more important things than the all star game." what a crock of crap... ignore him and then bash him? not the right response to your BEST player that is confused as to why he didn't get to play. hopefully they will both start acting like grownups soon and carry on....
I 100% did not get that at all. It seemed as if he went out of his way to not play Pujols. You have the bases loaded, down by two. Base hit wins the game, anything other than a walk and it's over. Availability for extra innings is of limited importance at that point. Why not bring a great clutch hitter to the plate with the game on the line? C'mon, Tony, I know you've seen Albert come through with the game on the line before, why not give him the opportunity to do it then? Nobody -- and I mean NOBODY -- would think that you were showing favoritism to get your player some time.

Puzzling. How is the All-Star manager selected? They botched it this year -- I'm not in the camp of folks that hates LaRussa, but this is definitely not his year...

Re: why i love baseball continued

i think the managers are the world series coaches from the previous year.

i also thought it was funny that leyland admitted he didn't start his 3 tigers 1-2-3 in the batting order specifically because he didn't want to show favoritism. he, instead, started them 6-7-8 or something like that. respectable. yet, i'd want to win the game now that it ain't just an exhibition. personally, i think his lineup was much better how he used it rather than start his 3 minions 1-2-3. can't go wrong with ichiro leading off.

Ahh, that makes total sense -- should have put that together.

Re: why i love baseball continued

Classic LaRussa over managing. How hard is it to just play your best player available? It's the All Star game ffs. Pujols hits .400+ with bases loaded. And hey, what a better way to try to get your slugger out of the HR slump he's been in than to put him on that stage in that situation.

You listen to 590 at all Toasty? Slaten's show? lol. He'll make you mad at first, but i have grown to dig his brutal approach. On from 3-5 or 3-6 daily or something, give it a shot sometime. Man LaRussa got creamed today.

I do listen to 590 a bit, but I'm typically still at the office at that time of day and I'm only in my car for 20 minutes at a time anyway, so I miss out on that sort of thing.

LaRussa deserved to get creamed today. Albert Freaking Pujols riding the pine with bases loaded, two outs, and the game on the line? Tony ought to be in jail.
But, "upon further review," as he put it, La Russa said he should have had Pujols hit with the bases loaded and two out against hard-throwing Los Angeles reliever Francisco Rodriguez.
Baseball.

The only sport you pay to go and never watch.

Re: why i love baseball continued

^ so true! maybe if there weren't so many things to do at turner field, i'd pay more attention. i always try to pay attention... neve happens.

#888983Post 49 of 66

Re: why i love baseball continued

Very true indeed. I definitely pay attention, but so much of going to a game is the experience of hanging out with your friends, having a beer, etc. that the game itself is secondary --

that is, until the games start to matter. October baseball is so different from July baseball, it's hard to even view them as the same sport.

bump too many soccer threads on top. :D

how bout them braves? got beat again tonight by the fucking reds... boo! arroyo really didn't look like a 3-7 pitcher but that's what his record said. that's kinda shocking to me. he looked sharp against the braves tonight, struck out tons.

Re: why i love baseball continued

How bout the CUBs coming on STRONG and picking up Jason Kendall. Ben Sheets going down for the brew crew isnt good at all and I think the Cubs will take to division.

#890467Post 54 of 66

Re: why i love baseball continued

^ tend to agree with you although i hate admitting that. baseball is cyclical, though. so we'll see if the cubs can keep up the pace. for their sake, i hope the owners let mark cuban purchase the cubs. he'll definitely get them headed in the right direction.

#890500Post 55 of 66

Re: why i love baseball continued

a few observations at this point in the season:

re: Jason Kendall = overrated imo, for the money he gets.

A's lost 10 straight? damn.

Yankees don't play a team with a winning record until mid august, plus they're getting their pitching back. That's like the perfect storm brewing.

I want Cuban in Baseball. I don't want him in chicago. That pretty much means Cubs winning the division every year, especially the way the cards ownership doesn't go after A list free agents.

Brewers won't win the division. Pitching is suspect. Way to overpay Suppan, 8-8.

I hope the cards fire larussa and hire joe jirardi.

The NL is going to get smoked in the WS.
I want Cuban in Baseball.
That dude is a Grade A, 100% Choice Tool. Ever have occasion to watch The Mark Cuban Show on HDNet during its short-lived run? The guy made Magic Johnson and Chevy Chase look like fucking rock stars and would give Muhammed Ali a run for his money in ego. I don't think I could bear if he were in Chicago, for a whole host of reasons unrelated to the fact that he'd stock their team (we all know that the Cubs will find a way to blow it anyway).

#893536Post 57 of 66

Re: why i love baseball continued

Re: why i love baseball continued

I want Cuban in baseball because i pretty much can't stand our commissioner, most of the ownership, and all the holier than thou higher ups in baseball. If for nothing else, it's good than just to have Cuban piss off Bud Selig every day.

Re: why i love baseball continued

thats exactly why i doubt he'll ever be an mlb owner... the majority of the owners these days have sticks up their asses and are only focused on how THEY can get richer and not on how to improve baseball. it's sad.

won't cuban need like 70% of all owners' permission in order to become an owner? they really need to change that rule.

That's exactly why i think he WILL be a mlb owner. Cuban in baseball makes them all richer. Especially if you're a small market owner, you know Cuban is going to spend like Steinbrenner does, and just pay the luxury tax thing like he does, and all the smaller market teams instantly get more money.

I can't stand Cuban as an owner for the Mavs but being a Cubs fan I would love to see him there. Can you imagine the meetings between Lou and Cuban after 5-10 game losing streak?
