the cards are folding... pun intended.

#715535Post 2 of 35

Re: Jenks

Dude, we're not folding, we're doing the same thing we've done all year- go on losing streaks. It's a pretty sad statement when we're still good enough to beat most of the rest of the shitty teams in the NL, and especially the ones in the Central. Seriously, we've had like 3 or 4 8+ game losing streaks this season, and never lost first place. Magic number has been on 5 for a week or two now, and we've lost like 5 straight or something, hell, we just got swept by a division team, and our magic number is still 5, and we're still in first. We're one of the best of the worst...guess that's something. (I could start a long rant here about cardinal ownership the past two years, but i won't....hey we got a shiney new stadium!!!!...which is really cool, but this is the only year i'm giving the team a pass on that issue.) We're still winning the division, and i still have us going to the NLCS, because when i look at the rest of the NL, we OWN the West- all year (which is likely who our first rounder will be.) Thanks for playing California, go save a tree.

Re: Jenks

btw, giving what i just said about how shitty the NL is....

Re: Jenks

Re: Jenks

keepin it close! anyone catch the braves and mets the past two nights? man, its been fucking awesome! the braves have outscored the mets 27-1. i don't like the chances for the astros if the braves continue playing this well. :(

congrats jenks... closer than i thought it would be at the end there ;)

#717911Post 16 of 35

Re: Jenks

Just got home from the game when the Cards "clinched" it. Around the 5th inning, the place went apeshit because the Astros lost to the Braves. They were playing the Braves "Duuuuuuuuuuuuh, duuuh, duh, duh, duh, duh ... duh, duh, duh, duuuuuh, duuuh, duh, duh, duh, duuuh" thing over the PA, and everyone was doing the tomahawk chop thing. Pretty sad, really -- but then again, I didn't see innings 3-5 because I was watching the Braves-Astros game on my phone, so I guess I'm as guilty as the rest of Cardinal Nation for just being happy we're in...

Perhaps now that we're in the playoffs, we'll start playing some fucking baseball? I almost wish we hadn't made it to alert the ownership that they can't just keep half-assing it, they've got to step it up...

Re: Jenks

you guys need to. cards suck right now. didn't carpenter even pitch and HE even got rocked today? oh well, wipe the slate clean and start again right now. good luck in the post.

Re: Jenks
didn't carpenter even pitch and HE even got rocked today?
It was Reyes, not Carpenter (thankfully) -- got pulled in the first after 4 runs in .2 innings. At that point, people became very engaged in the ATL-HOU game...

Re: Jenks

listen, obviously, the cards have to rebuild next year. soooooo... who stays, who goes? is rolen coming back? you know edmunds is on his way to colorado, and a few others are gonna run

what do you two think is gonna happen in the off season?> i could EASILY see manny look at albert and go, maybe i should hit behind him?

#718311Post 20 of 35

Re: Jenks

Who stays:

Pujols (obviously), Rolen, Eckstein, Duncan, Carpenter, Reyes, Wainright - (just a rookie this year,) Suppan, Molina

Who goes:

Hopefully Izzy, and everyone else as far as i'm concerned.

Who do we need:

Once again, like every year, THE BULLPEN, and PITCHING! Jockety!!! Hello?? Can't really blame him tho, as he's strapped to the chair by cardinals ownership, who, imo, have some questions to answer about themselves. Are they going to be the kind of ownership that goes out and gets a WS title? or are they going to be the kind of ownership that is just concerned with that level right below champion? Good team, fills the stands, lots of oooo's and ahhh's, but not the next level. What they're concerned with imo is, a shiney new park, and baseball village (which who the fk knows when that will be completed, but i suspect it's top priority ABOVE the team, which is what pisses me off about this group.)

Yeah, Manny would be awesome, not a chance tho, can't afford him. One thing is for sure, he'd get the fan appreciation here that he doesn't get in Beantown.

Re: Jenks

as an outsider with no rooting interest in the team, i am gonna say something based on outside views . they should really look into trading rolen. i know, i know. dont say it. you watch him a lot more than i do. but when i watch, i see a 31 year old who looks like he is 39. he, to me at least, lost that look he had 3-4 years ago. he seems tired, old, and hurt. his offense slipped a little bit, but i dunno, i dont think he'll be good for much longer, maybe 2-3 years. he just looks run down, not to mention he aint exactly a small guy. that frame has to be a cunt to keep healthy, especially at the hot corner, his back must be shot.

#718320Post 22 of 35

Re: Jenks

His glove is worth keeping alone. Not to mention he's good for about .300, 100, and 25. I don't see us getting anything else at third that'll make that up. The only way i'd consider a trade is if we're getting a really good pitching talent...or Manny. ;)

#718330Post 23 of 35

Re: Jenks

We have to keep Rolen, if only to avoid me having to retire yet another Cards jersey. That McGwire one I purchased a few years ago is just collecting dust in my closet now, and with the the whole steroid thing, it's not like you can still wear it like you could if it were an Ozzie, Musial, or Brock jersey...

Seriously, I agree with Jenks that his defense alone makes him worth keeping. The guy routinely makes the impossible possible, and there have been a number of times when, in his absence, a ball will get through or someone will get an infield single to third, and I'll think to myself, "If that were Rolen, that would have been an out..."

Was at a game last year and saw someone wearing the McGwire jersey, except he took black tape and put a big "X" over the back of it. Thought that was awesome. Maybe have an asterix sewn next to McGwire on the back. ;)

Re: Jenks

agree... rolen is a must-keep. the guy has how many gold gloves? the only down-side is yeah, he's been injured a lot. just gotta take your chances with that.

#718339Post 26 of 35

Re: Jenks

exactly, injuries + age + a 6'5'' frame = trouble after 35.

#718345Post 27 of 35

Re: Jenks

It has pretty much been the same injury, his shoulder, which to my knowledge, he had surgery last season to correct, and the docs expected him to come back slowly. He still played over 140 games this year, put up about .300, 100, and 25. i'll take that chance next year too.

Edmonds- i'd like him to retire a cardinal, but i totally understand he's not ready to be done playing yet. We just can't afford to have his bat in the lineup. He's still a good center fielder, but only playing about 100 games and streaky hitting at .250 isn't cutting it if we're serious about putting a champion on the field. I'd like this to happen, but I doubt Edmonds ego would let him sign a smaller 1yr contract and remain as a bench player.

Isringhausen- don't let the door hit ya on the way out!!! (something tells me he'll be back tho) :(

but anyway...enough of this kind of talk...we made the post season, no matter how shitty we finished and got in....we're IN, and a whole new season starts tuesday! Anything can happen.

Re: Jenks

^^you planning on going to any of the games?

I'll be there Saturday for sure -- let me know if you're going to be down there, and we can meet up for a brew or 2 (although I suspect you'll likely be pretty tied up with house stuff)...

Re: Jenks

astros will pick up rolen with that extra $18 mil they get from bagwell retiring... i can see it now :)

Re: Jenks

jenks, congrats to your cards for makin it to the lcs. they're easily my second favorite team in baseball so i will be rooting for them all the way! they played a solid game tonight despite that shaky first inning by carpenter. he found his ground and rocked the padres. great game.

Go Cards!

Re: Jenks

surprised carpenter pitched so bad in the first inning. he must have been shitting bricks or something. anyhow, glad they're representing the central and glad to see they are out of their slump when it matters. now, the true test begins against NY.
