tonight is the last goodbye for the final member of the fab 4. courrier, sampras, chang, have all come and gone, but andre gets his final farewell tonight in the one event that pulls me away from baseball every year. the US Open will host a ceremony tonight to rename the second court to billy jean king court and give andre his last NY good bye.

keep you eyes on the tube to see how much NYC shows agassi what he meant to us.

I was watching, AA was welling up as he served out the set!! This is why we watch sports.

The sucky part is that he got a terrible draw and has to play Marcos Baghdatis in the 2nd round!! It would be a shame to oust MB so early, it would be a tragedy to oust AA.

Re: tennis fans.

Re: tennis fans.

Go Andre. He is on a role until he meets roddick in the 4th round and then the dream is over. I don't think he can beat roddick. But truely is one of the greats. I have enjoyed watching him over the yrs and tennis will definetly miss his presence.

...assuming Roddick makes it that far! :what

Re: tennis fans.

bagdhatis is better than roddick and he beat him... who knows what will happen. agassi looked like he was hurting after his match last night pretty bad.

had a chance to watch andy here in cincy at the masters series two weeks ago and you could tell then his game was coming back... he cruised to the championship here and honestly looks as good or even better than he ever has... not sure what connors said and/or did but roddick looks pretty damn good right now. big time pulling for blake tonight but federer is so fucking solid...

Re: tennis fans.

last night: roddick hewitt, didn't know who to root for becuase I don't like either of them.

tonight: black federer - again don't know who to root for, but because I like both of them a lot.

I predict Federer will cruise to another US championship (well maybe not cruise but he will win)

Re: tennis fans.

Federer is the GREATEST EVER hands down. 3 Us opens and 3 Wimbledon titles in a row. WOW that has never been done before until now. Did you see Tiger in attendance? Those two are without a doubt the 2 most dominant players in sports today or any day imo.

Re: tennis fans.

Agreed, yet that final match was very anti-climatic. Not saying RF shouldn't have won, but I just wish Roddick hadn't checked out in that last set after the build up. Great run for Andy though, let's hope he can keep this form.

Re: tennis fans.

andy needs to learn how to volley and how to pick better approach shots to come in on. that and he needs to learn how to stay focused when he's playing roger. i know he was trying to get the crowd into the match, but he seemed to lose some focus in doing so. its hard to stay focused as well when you've been boning maria sharapova and mandy moore. :P

Re: tennis fans.

andy needs to stop worrying about MTV and the rest and focus between the lines.

and federer, while GREAT, has the charisma of a homeless guy cornering you in penn station and demanding money.

#707075Post 18 of 20

Re: tennis fans.

just like sampras. their charisma may not be great, but they are great at what they do.

#707076Post 19 of 20

Re: tennis fans.

but sampras had guts, and like i have said before, guts earn you more than anything outside of championships. federer hasnt had to show guts. the only times he has gotten in trouble and fell behind he has lost. it doesnt happen a lot, but go ask rafael nadal.

guts is agassi going down 4-0 in the third set, coming back and winning. with a bad back.

Spot on Garrick, Andy did well with charging the net but I think he used it a little too much and Fed burned him with the killer passing shots. If you can't hang back on the baseline and slug away with ground strokes, you simply can't hang.

Focus is the key to playing Federer. He's done it time and time again, his rival with scrape claw and fight his way to a set win, and then in the next set trys to take a breather and before you know it Fed is serving out at 6-0, like WTF? You simply can't let up on that guy for a second, he can win a set on you in a blink of an eye.

In the Blake match I went to Fed won the 1st set in a very close a tie breaker. I got up to take a piss and when I got back it was 4-0, again, WTF?

I agree with you guys Roger is a too robotic, but perhaps these types of players only get the appreciation they deserve later on. He is composed and austere, so there's nothing for the fans to latch onto other than his skill. You can say Sampras had guts now, but would you have said the same in his prime when he dominated and it was boring?
