Saw this one and had to throw it out there...after the last olympics with Tiesto, thankfully the Italians went for quality over commercial hype. :Bingo:

Richie Hawtin creates 9:20 for the XXth Winter Olympics Opening Ceremony

Words: Resident Advisor Published: 04:00 am Monday, January 16, 2006.

Richie Hawtin has created a piece of music for the XXth Olympic Winter Games Opening Ceremony taking place on February 10th in Torino, Italy.

The new composition titled "9:20", was written & produced by Richie Hawtin and made in collaboration with renowned Italian choreographer, Enzo Cosimi at Hawtin's Berlin studio. It will accompany Cosimi's provocative choreography featuring famous Italian dancer Robert Bolle along with dozens of other dancers, performers and acrobats. Hawtin & Cosimi worked together to build an evolving soundscape of sounds and effects to accompany the different movements of Cosimi's piece. The composition will tie in with the theme of the Opening Ceremony, the foundation elements of Rhythm, Passion and Speed.

"Enzo and I are very much interested in pushing boundaries, both as artists and for our audiences. Working together for the Opening Ceremonies of the Winter Games delivers the creative endeavor to not only entertain a huge audience, but to also introduce them to sights and sounds that they may have never experienced before," says Hawtin from his studio in Berlin.

This is not the first time Olympic ceremony producers have called on an electronic or dance music artist. The Athens Summer Olympics in 2004 also saw Dutch trance DJ Tiesto mix during the Parade of Athletes.

Re: Hawtin does the olympics

Re: Hawtin does the olympics

Kudos to the Olympic committee for recognizing Electronic artists/dj's (even tiesto, i guess) as valid contributors to the Games...and not falling back on pop stars and the like.

Re: Hawtin does the olympics

This is cool, I hope we can hear the music clearly this time durring the ceremony, I just hate how they broadcast here in the States going to comercial and stuff and not showing everything, and on top of that, You could barely hear the music, So we'll see what they will do this year.

Re: Hawtin does the olympics

Tiesto wasn't the first though was he?

I'm pretty sure Aussie DJ Peewee Ferris also did the same thing at the Sydney 2000 games. I've also got a feeling he produced tracks specifically for it, but I'd have to follow that up.

Re: Hawtin does the olympics

That will be cool. Let hope we actually get to hear this.

Re: Hawtin does the olympics

Bjork also performed at the Greece opening ceremony. She had a dress that grew and grew. I forget what song she did.

Re: Hawtin does the olympics

Re: Hawtin does the olympics

As far as I understood, his score should play when the athlets come in...which they do at the moment but there is some disco house gibberish playing. :what

Re: Hawtin does the olympics

I really can't wait to hear this. I hope that there is a clean rip of this b/c I think that you might not be able to hear some of the mix with all the announcements over top of it.

#561631Post 23 of 29

Re: Hawtin does the olympics

i really have NO IDEA what to expect from mr. hawtin on this one.

#561638Post 24 of 29

Re: Hawtin does the olympics

^^^ i don't either. someone told me to expect more of an ambient type of style. probably more like some of the down tempo tracks from his plastikman albums.

but then again, if they were playing disco-like stuff earlier who knows?

Re: Hawtin does the olympics
but there is some disco house gibberish playing. :what
Thats about all I caught. Sonded like Teisto was there again for the parade of athletes, not Hawtin. Did anybody catch anything that even remotely seemed Hawtin'esh?

#562223Post 26 of 29

Re: Hawtin does the olympics

^^^ Yes.... several of the athletes were bald AND wearing glasses...

#562224Post 27 of 29

Re: Hawtin does the olympics

I heard the fucking Village People.

#562234Post 28 of 29

Re: Hawtin does the olympics

In all seriousness the whole "choreographed" beginning with the flaming skaters, cows, the "beating" heart etc was hawtin's piece... If you go to his website (www.m-nus.com) it plays a bit of it and you'll recognize it immediately if you watched the opening ceremony.

Re: Hawtin does the olympics

I did like the whole thing with the individual people making a big picture like the ski jumper and the dove, though.
