Re: monday night football (brit talk 101)

FYI, "Monday Night Football" is a brand name, it means more than a football game that is played on Monday night (although that is about to change) and is definitely very specific to "American" (real) Football.

Re: monday night football (brit talk 101)

Dude, it's only specific to 'Amercian' football in America! The british broadcaster Sky also calls it's Monday football, sorry 'soccer', show 'Monday Night Football'. You might want to take it up with them.

And about the 'real' football line - there's a can of worms. Which game came first? Which one actually requires more skills in the foot area? Which one is more popular world (that means including counties outside the US) wide?

No offense, I'm a fan of American Football, but I hate ignorant ass comments like that.

Why is that an ingorant comment? As Americans that is all we relate to when we hear Monday Night Football. I don't think he was putting anything down about soccer.

yeah I saw his goal, a splendid individual effort.

as for the history of football aka saccer, it goes back to around the 3rd century where as american football started in the mid 19th century i think

None taken, but I still disagree. BTW, the "real" football comment was just a joke to provoke a reaction, which it did ;), but I'm serious about the rest.

MNF has been running in the states for 30 years, and has deep cultural significance as it is the only free-to-air nation football game each week. Despite baseball's claims to the contrary, football is without a doubt the number one sport in the US. I'm not sure you understand the significance of football in the US (Superbowl Sunday is an unofficial national holiday that is prevelant enough that everyone up to and possibly including nuns fill out betting sheets) or the cultural impact MNF had—it was a sensation when it started and had an impact outside of football itself. It is big enough that I’d wager that you know who Howard Cosell is (original MNF announcer) and even can do an impression of him.

If Sky happens to be calling their show "MNF" then in my eyes that is very obviously playing off our MNF’s brand power and in fact the whole idea is a direct copy (although I will admit that now learning that I see where some confusion could arise). While I won't go so far as to take it up with them, I will not be recognizing it as equivalent anytime soon either. It is fine that you guys do something similar but don't diminish the preeminence of the standard barer with an upstart.

yeah, coz so many brits are familiar with the american MNF

taxi for Kobe please

its a football show... on monday night... how the fuck is calling a football show on monday night "monday night football" fucking copying another show just because it does the same? have a word ffs.

#525589Post 31 of 45

Re: monday night soccer (brit talk 101)

Are you suggesting it is a coincidence? BTW, I agree it is unlikely many Brits would know respond the the brand name "MNF" which only makes this whole thing that much more beguiling to me.

Re: monday night soccer (brit talk 101)

Mwha hah ahha hah!

My dastardly plan worked. I knew at least one american on this board would have to comment on the social significance of how Monday night football was originally theres or that there is no way that our football is football because they call it soccer. We invented the game and named it so how can you give it another name even though the rest of the world know the game as football??? Why did you have to give it another name? I cant understand the reasoning so someone please help me out!

Re: monday night soccer (brit talk 101)

like school children at the sandbox.

arguing over football and football.

we had it first, no you didn't, yes we did, no, yes, no, yes...

Re: monday night soccer (brit talk 101)

We did though.......................

#525614Post 35 of 45

Re: monday night soccer (brit talk 101)

I knew that was coming... it was only a matter of time. Frankly I agree, I have no idea why they gave it the same name and it actually make very little sense as only a small portion of the game has to do with foot-to-ball contact.

My best guess would be that we probably did it just to piss you guys off, and it appears to have worked. Maybe Sky's using MNF is a return of the favor?
Why is that an ingorant comment? As Americans that is all we relate to when we hear Monday Night Football. I don't think he was putting anything down about soccer.
I was referring to the 'real football' comment. And when you say 'we', remember that a large percentage of this board is not American - so 'we' don't all relate to that.
BTW, the "real" football comment was just a joke to provoke a reaction, which it did ;)
You got me :D
I'm not sure you understand the significance of football in the US
I think I do - I've been in the states over Superbowl weekend 4 times, and been to a few games as well. Come over here and check out how much 'soccer' dominates and rules the airwaves here. The country virtually ground to a halt last week when George Best died. It's similar, if not more significant.

Anyway, two great sports that dominate in their country in their own way. It's just one is a bit greater than the other ;) And back to the point of the thread, Zamora scored a beauty. Must have been a fluke. :)

I saw a pic of that online, huge turn out, very impressive. I don't think there is anyone who could cause such a showing here in the US these days.

(...Except Elvis, for some reason :what ) ;)
