Re: Penn State

i'm in no way accusing paterno of anything, but i wonder if the school and even maybe the media are protecting a coaching legend. i highly doubt joe pa was involved in this in any way, but it's hard not to think that somehow, some way he knew something about this when there were so many incidents.

absolutely disgusting actions by sandusky. looks mike leach look like a saint!

Re: Penn State

This story is plain awful. I HIGHLY doubt Joe Paterno had anything to do with any of this.

Obviously the worst part of this is the effect that this has had on the victims.

As a Big10 football rube I am very sad that Joe Paterno's legacy will now be completely tarnished and he'll inevitably be shown the door for what this effing pervert did. Sad stuff.

Re: Penn State

^ very good point although i don't think his legacy will be tarnished too badly if he really didn't have any kind of involvement. like you said, he was just a victim of someone else's actions...
he was just a victim of someone else's actions...
Bullshit!! He is complicit. He didn't do enough, just passed the buck and put the university, football, and his legacy ahead of children being abused. Not only did he not do enough, he harbored a fucking pedophile for a DECADE! Fuck his legacy. If you haven't read the indictment, i suggest you do so. Absolutely disgusting. The Ad, University president, JoePa, all need to be fired- yesterday. The assistant coach who caught the Sandusky in the shower sodomizing a 10 year old boy, BACK IN 2002, needs to be brought up on charges for running away and not stopping the abuse, he's complicit. This whole story is getting worse by the day, and the response by Penn State is atrocious. The abuse reports are in the double digits now..over A DECADE! Had JoePa, anyone at the university, done the right thing, this could have stopped years ago, but they are all complicit in covering it up and deserve tenfold the heat they're taking.

Re: Penn State

Ok, having read that I am...

A) DISGUSTED BEYOND BELIEF. --- Sandusky should burn in hell for the rest of his life. There aren't words to describe my feelings of hatred toward him

B) Paterno is not very prevalent in the report. However, in the case of Victim 7 Joe Pa reported the grad assistant's story directly to the athlertic director at Penn State. Not sure what more you can ask him to do. He reported it to his supervisor. From the report it sounds like those above Joe Pa were the ones who covered it up by downplaying the severity of the incident.

Yuck yuck yuck awful awful stuff

Joe Paterno is the face of Penn State, and has been for decades. He runs that University. In the face of those kind of allegations (witnessed facts!) you stand up and say NO! ABSOLUTELY FUCKING NOT!...and bring it to public light. Instead, he is complicit in the coverup by not doing so and worked along side Sandusky for years afterwards, as more children were victimized. You have to ask yourself this: If that were YOUR child, that Sandusky sodomized in the bathroom, and was caught, and JoePa knew about it- if it were your son, would you think "Well I guess JoePa did all he could do!"

agree with this entirely.

He did not prevent further abuse from happening. Its sickening.

Lets not disguise the extent of the abuse either - Sandusky was raping young boys.

At anypoint if anyone ever discloses abuse - or the potential of abuse of children - you first protect the children, then goto the police.

You are all very right and I agree with each of you 100%.

I can't help the fact that I want to believe that JoePa is free from any wrongdoing. For whatever reason I wish that he would walk away with his image intact, but it's obvious that isn't going to happen. To see a great man's career ruined by some sick fuck is really unfortunate.

However, I am very aware that those who we should be concerned are the victims. It's an awful story that I am certain will only get worse as more information is released.

HIS career would have been intact if he had done something to prevent abuse. He made an active decision not to. Other boys were abused because of his inaction.

It is an indefensible situation. IMHO.

You are actually trying to argue that because he is successful in his job, then he should be devoid of any responsibility as an actual human being?

There are plenty of people with successful jobs.

Re: Penn State
HIS career would You are actually trying to argue that because he is successful in his job, then he should be devoid of any responsibility as an actual human being? .
That's not at all what I am suggesting. Not in the least bit.

I've lived my entire lifespan in Big10 country. For as long as I can remember I have been watching Big10 football. I grew up watching teams like Penn State, Ohio State, Michigan, etc. Through that I came to admire Joe Paterno as well as many other past and present coaches/players over the years as a Big10 fan.

All I am saying is that I wish this never would have happened. I wish JoePa could ride off into the sun as arguably the greatest college football coach in history and more importantly as a leader, mentor and great example for the many young men he has coached through his many years at PSU.

He may not have done enough bring light to this, but I refuse to believe that he orchestrated a cover up or created an environment that allowed this kind of thing to go on. I am 1000% sure that if Paterno knew more about what was going on he would've ran Sandusky out of the program many years ago.

He personally told BOTH of his supervisors what the grad assistant told him and in turn his superiors handled the matter. Was it his job to go on a personal crusade to verify a grad assistant's story about a well respected man of the university? Absolutely not. If you read the report it's pretty clear the cover-up was executed by the AD and VP of Finance/Business for the university. Should Paterno have called his superiors everyday to check up on the progress of the investigation? NO. Paterno let his superiors do their jobs just as they let JoePa do his.

Everyone seems to think that Coach Paterno is omniscient and that he runs everything at PSU. Not true. He's a god-damned football coach. He's not an investigator, detective or moral policeman. He's paid to win football games and build the program through recruiting...end of story.

If it comes to light that he covered things up or had any hand in what went on then I will be the first to condemn him for his actions or inactions.
I am 1000% sure that if Paterno knew more about what was going on he would've ran Sandusky out of the program many years ago.
The fact is, he knew enough, and didn't. How much more information did he need? I think the allegation was strong enough.
He personally told BOTH of his supervisors what the grad assistant told him and in turn his superiors handled the matter. Was it his job to go on a personal crusade to verify a grad assistant's story about a well respected man of the university?
When a 10 year old boy is sodomized in his locker room shower by a member of his staff- yes, he should personally see those allegations to their resolution. That's his job as a human being.
Should Paterno have called his superiors everyday to check up on the progress of the investigation?
Absolutely!
He's a god-damned football coach. He's not an investigator, detective or moral policeman. He's paid to win football games and build the program through recruiting...end of story.
Come on Weizy, are you really playing the "that wasn't his job" card here? A child was raped by HIS coach on HIS watch in HIS locker room. Just because it isn't in his job description as a football coach to, uh, i dunno, give more of a shit about it, as a human being, it's his moral obligation to do more than he did. Instead, he passed the buck and went about his business. That's unacceptable given the weight of the claims. We're not talking about some sneakers being stolen here.

We will never know, because Paterno didn't follow up any further than he did, but maybe if he had been at least a little persistent about the issue, then dozens of other children might not have been victimized over the past decade.

I'm not hanging this all on Joe, the situation warranted more of a response from EVERYONE, including Joe Paterno, but he was one of the ones that let it go. That's a complete failure any way you slice it from the President of the University to the AD on down through Joe Paterno, and they all should be held accountable. From the sound of it, the board of trustees agrees, and house is getting cleaned.

wow this thread exploded... i have no idea what that acronym stands for, jenks but i'm sure i obviously fall into that category. i admit to not knowing all the facts. i personally thought he would have had to know something but never read enough to know that he factually did. never liked him anyways. touche.

Re: Penn State

Alright...I digress. It's Coach Paterno's fault.

He should have personally seen to it that it was investigated appropriately as well as fired Sandusky based on the grad assistant's allegations.

Re: Penn State
Alright...I digress. It's Coach Paterno's fault.
This wasn't about saying it was Paterno's fault, it's the entire chain of command's fault at Penn State, but Joe doesn't get a pass either.

I'm just disgusted people in power didn't do more at the time. Hind sight is always 2020, but this one is difficult to grasp why it went down like that.

#1565750Post 22 of 45

Re: Penn State

I prob went a bit too far in saying it's Paterno's fault. He is at fault one way or another. The one piece that I wish we had more information on is what the grad assistant actually told Paterno. However, at this point it really doesn't matter.

http://www.wtae.com/r/29723805/detail.html

Per that piece, PSU policy Paterno was required to notify the VP of Student Affairs and police. I don't believe he did either of those. You can tell from his quotes that he's heartbroken:

"This is a tragedy," Paterno said in a statement. "It is one of the great sorrows of my life. With the benefit of hindsight, I wish I had done more."

Man I am really disappointed by all of this. Most news stories don't have an effect on me, but after reading that report today I just feel terribleabout the whole ordeal. My thoughts and prayers go out to the victims.

what i mean is that there is so much hate directed in the media towards JoePa when there are others who are at fault even more so then him.

what about the moron who witnesessed the incident and didnt report it to the cops?? wtf is he still coaching on the team??

...why not throw the Janitor in jail...he witnessed it and didnt call the cops.

imo the whole entire coaching staff of the team shall also be fired....clean house, just forefeit the rest of the season.

however, paints a picture of the atmosphere at the sports level of the college which could easily create such a major cover up.

True... and apparently there was an investigation into Sandusky in the late 90s.. where allegedly he was noticed to have said he did in fact touch boys inappropriately... probably true that this investigation was buried...

This is only the tip of the iceberg no doubt..

•Missing prosecutor didn't charge Sandusky after 1998 report •DA Ray Gricar went for a drive in 2005 and was never seen again •Gricar's state computer was found in river, too damaged to read

In April, 2005 Gricar disappeared from the District Attorney’s office never to be seen again. He called his girlfriend and said he was going to take a leisurely drive that afternoon. His abandoned car was found near an antiques store in Lewisberg, Pennsylvania. His computer was found later in the Susquehanna River, but the hard drive had been taken out. Months later when the river banks receded, the hard drive was found about 100 yards from where the computer had been located. It was determined by investigators that the hard drive had been intentionally removed from the computer and repeated tests, including one done by the FBI, could not retrieve any data. The hard drive was too damaged.
