BOSTON (AP) - The arena is in downtown Boston, the heart of Red Sox Nation. There couldn't be a bigger insult than to name it after the captain of the hated New York Yankees.

But that's just what Manhattan lawyer Kerry Konrad aims to do next Tuesday after his $2,325 bid won an eBay auction giving him the one-day naming rights to the FleetCenter.

Konrad's proposed name: the Derek Jeter Center, after the Yankee shortstop.

His winning bid threw the FleetCenter brass into a dilemma. "I told him, 'I don't think we can approve that name,"' arena spokesman Jim Delaney said.

"That name may not be as bad as A-Rod," Delaney said, referring to Yankee third baseman Alex Rodriquez, "but it's still considered obscene."

He said he would talk it over Friday with FleetCenter president Richard Krezwick and a decision would be made by the end of the day. Arena officials have reserved the right to approve or reject any winning bid.

The FleetCenter is home to the Boston Celtics and Boston Bruins. The name became obsolete after Bank of America acquired FleetBoston Financial last year and the Charlotte, N.C., banking giant opted not to retain the naming rights.

While the arena's owner, Delaware North Cos., searches for a new long-term partner, it has been offering one-day naming rights on eBay and donating the proceeds to charity. Past winners have included an online casino and a California man who named it for his wife as a Valentine's Day present. The names are posted on signs around the arena and on fleetcenter.com

Konrad, a Harvard alum, had the high bid for the March 1 naming rights. His wife, Nina Webb, said it was part of a 20-year college rivalry with some Boston buddies.

Delaney said Konrad has been understanding about their predicament, even suggesting that if his Boston friends match his winning bid, they can all settle on a 24-hour name for the arena.

one thing also, if i were A-rod, i would have run over arroyo when he stood in the way, its a legal move and arroyo would have been flattened. what he ended up doing was pretty bush league.

yea our stadium sucks becasue of al davis' contruction to make it a football statium, but it is still a fack that stienbrener shells about more cash then most owners are able to invest dispite the statidum attenance. and f you, i missed about 15-20 home games last year and am going to srping training this year. oakland it not a metropolitan city like ny or sf, where parks do sell out, its jsut not gonna happeen. all other sports have a salery cap, and i think most fans will agree it will make the game much more fair. and far as i am concerned, ny pink shirt party boy is the prime example of a yankees fan, they says "fuck boston" just to be trendy and claim a baseball team because hes from that town, those are the kind of people that fill up yankee staidum. yes im a a's fan becasue im from oakland but im an a's fan becasue their pay role is about a quarter of the yankees but they still continue to win games.

The one thing that I liked when I saw the Sox play the A's in Oakland last summer was the cheap seats. $26 for some great seats and I got to see the Sox smack the A's silly. (great team btw, nice stadium. Bigger than Fenway) Enough with this bullshit with the Yanks and the Sox and the salary cap. I don't see this salary cap starting anytime soon. First they have to deal with the drugs. Maybe a couple of years, and when that happens, I am sure that there will be another strike.

Btw the make a wish foundation won the naming rights.They named it after a patient.Some kind named Kurt.All the signage in the building that had fleetcenter was changed to the Kurtcenter.The jumbo tron had kurtcenter on it.all the news outlets in the city reffered to it as the Kurtcenter.To me that was pretty cool what they did for the kid.
