This thread don't look right without some stupid tittle labelling any labels Sasha has been associated with.

And a dissertation on how his real name is Alex and he played a couple of gigs in a working men's club in a shit hole in Mansfield.

I will forget about this boring uninspired set and keep listening the mixmag cd.

Re: sasha - mixmag live 27-07-2013

I have listened to this set about 20 times and it just keeps getting better. Yes, the mixmag cd is good but this mix is spot on to the old Sasha mixes back in the glory days.

P.S No offense to anyone but I think it is rather odd that all the newbies on here hate this set and all the old-timers, me included are raving about this mix. Go figure!!

How does this set compare to the old Sasha mixes in the glory dates?

I'd love to hear your explanation to such an absurd and utterly ridiculous comment.

This set started off well, but fizzled out towards the middle with a bunch of plodding, boring tech-house clunkers before it was saved by the ID track and Schn33.

When you say old timers when are you talking about?

By that I mean people pigeon hole Sasha with a sound, but for me he has played everything over the years.

In '89 and '90 he was playing lots of rave stuff, a more Northern sound with lots of Italian piano tunes, hands in the air classics, but still rave.

Then in '91 till about '94 he was playing more house, again mixing it up a treat, some real underground gems mixed in with almost chart stuff and getting away with it.

Then in '94'ish he started playing what I guess many would call early progressive, to me it was just mixing in tracks from labels like Guerilla records, by '95 and '96 he was into his epic 10 minute tracks that were a real journey.

But he was still playing all sorts of different sounds out, listen to his Twilo sets and then a set from Alexanda Palace in the same year, and in the summer of '97 he did his Tyrant nights, the one at Park Royal film studios had him playing deep dark beats with almost acid riffs over the top, that was almost techno that night.

The reason I alway liked Sasha and Digweed was because they played all genres, a deep house track mixed into some epic progressive track, followed by some tribal sounding track that then lead into some melodic vocal masterpiece. For me as they got into those times playing electro and prog with sod all else for 2-3 hours was the time I got a bit bored of it all, pretty much stopped listening for a few years.

I keep seeing 'Sasha back to his best' and 'Sasha not as good as his best' when really those comments should read "Sasha is playing the stuff I liked best, the stuff he was playing when I got into him".

I have not managed to listen to this mix yet, keep playing it and getting a few tracks in and getting bored, but I will give it a go in the car or something, sometimes not till you have listened to the whole thing that it clicks.

1997 was my favorite year of Sasha. To me that year his sets were the most diverse and interesting, but too bad there are so few sets of his on the internet from that year.

#1696360Post 28 of 35

Re: sasha - mixmag live 27-07-2013

'97 was the year of the Tyrant gig at Park Royal film studios, and that night was the best I had heard him, deep, dark and very blippy.

These were some of the tracks he played, well, we were sure he did, they were ones on a mix tape we bought not long after that Tyrant night and thought we recognised..

Terry Lee Brown Jr. - Outshine - YouTube

LSG - Fragile Part 2 - YouTube

Mortal - Autobahnana - YouTube

Man Made Man - Karmaflage - YouTube

There was others on there as well, but can't remember them. I think the set that we had the tape of was said to be from Tyrant Nottingham and then later as Sasha at Revolution in Bristol or something, but maybe someone just knocked it up and said it was Sasha after the Tyrant night in London, he played a long set. Only takes someone to know 10 tracks from the whole night to then knock a tape up and call it Sasha.

But some of the stuff he was playing in '92, '93 etc. was what I feel really set him apart from many, mainly because he was playing more housey stuff to hardcore crowds and nailing it.

Anyway, listened to this set in the car today, 4 or 5 really nice tracks and the rest were just boring. Shame.

Re: sasha - mixmag live 27-07-2013

I would say 91-92 was his rave period, played tunes like 2 bad mice Bombscare and Rhythm quest Closer to all your dreams which fitted more into the rave sound, it was around 93 he switched to the more progressive sound. My favourite Sasha era was probably 94-96, thats when he started playing the more epic sounding stuff and artists like Blue Amazon and BT were bang on it, i think for me Sasha started to lose his appeal around 2005, thats when he started experimenting with Ableton and hes been hit and miss since then. This set is ok, not as good as his Mixmag CD but there are a couple of good tunes on it

Your right thinking about it, I left school in the summer of '89 and started going to underground parties the following spring, the following summer was where it really kicked off and the year after that it was probably when I started to see Sasha at Eclipse and other venues, that was when they were at the Corn Exchange rather than big outdoor events. So yeah, 1991.

excluding northern exposure i'd say his 2005 essential mix is the most inspiring thing i,ve ever heard from him
