Its a long shot!!! but anyone have info on any of these?

UTM - Stream (World Tour 99 - Miami set) Lex - Verticle Horizon (World Tour 99 - Havana Cuba set) - supposedly on Barracuda The Source - Fly Away (World Tour 99 - usually closed sets with this)
Yeah its a bit strange how none of these 3 appear on discogs. I'm guessing the Lex track is correct as it appears on this

I loved the end of 1999 when he used to finish with Atlantis Ita - See You In The Next Life

Re: Some Oakenfold gems

freakin sweet thread.

i love oakeys EM99 series, some of the best.

I still listen to the Sydney mix here and there, I remember this really turning me on to the whole dj scene and house, etc.

I got to see oakey in Chicago and in some crappy bar in Detroit around 2000 when he first toured with dave ralph. those were good shows, still remember them.

how can you not like this TL? It still kicks today:
Paul Oakenfold - 1999-01-17 - Essential Mix World Tour - Live at Home, Sydney, Australia

01 Narcotik - Blue 02 Jan Johnston - Am I On Pause 03 Tilt - Children (Tilt Courtyard Mix) 04 Delerium ft. Sarah Maclachlan - Silence (Fade Sanctuary Mix) 05 Slacker - God Damn Noise 06 Garbage - When I Grow Up (Danny Tenaglia Club Mix) 07 Stoneproof - Everything's Not You (Quivver Space Mix) 08 Utah Saints - Love Songs (Original 12" Mix) 09 Marillion & The Positive Light - Face 1004 (Marc Mitchell Mix) 10 Sunset Sky - A New World 11 Fat Heads - Music 4 Lunch 12 Sisko - Light Over Me (Gate Of Light Mix) 13 Hydro - Utopia (Native Vocal Mix) 14 The Auranaut - People Want To Be Needed (Planet Heaven Mix) 15 Arksun - Astrodancer 16 Silent Harmony - Save The Whales 17 Mox Epoque I Feel My (Extended Vox Mix) 18 Fridge - Paradise (Nu-Gray Mix) 19 Push - Universal Nation (Dumonde Mix) 20 Tomcraft - The Lord (Darkness) 21 Lynsey Moore - Capture Me (John '00' Flemming Mix)
Re: Some Oakenfold gems

^ Sydney is also the one that got me into this music. Remember my mate was banging on about this DJ called Oakenfold. I taped this mix and was hooked from the first 2 minutes of Narcotik. Went out and bought Sasha San Fran purely becaase this track was on it. The rest is history..........

Re: Some Oakenfold gems

Great post indeed. I'm really curious about that 2002 Creamfields Prague set just becuase a good buddy of mine living in Prague at the time HATED Oakenfold, and hated how much attention Oakenfold was getting. My buddy was a techno snob (nothing wrong with that in my opinion by the way....being snobby has always been a part of techno anyway), but when I asked him who played his favorite set at that Creamfields he said, "Surprisingly, Oakenfold. Beautiful psy-trance...nothing cheesy..the guy knows his audience. If he had tried to play in Prague the way he plays in other places, he'd have been booed out...but he brought it."

Re: Some Oakenfold gems

I always used to love his proper club sets. I always found at festivals and big gigs he would play lots of anthems. His sets at Home where brilliant.

Re: Some Oakenfold gems

It's funny - I was on the old Essential Mix Mailing list in 1999/2000 and people constantly moaned about Oakey and R1 having him on the EM all the time! Personally I couldn't get enough Oakenfold (he was my favourite DJ at the time). Even then I thought one day people will look back on that period in hindsight with affection rather than the distain that was shown. You don't always appreciate what you have at the time!

For me personally 1995-2000 was Oakey's peak. He's done some good sets since (his Perfecto Ibiza mix in 2001 for instance), but I don't think it's a coincidence his sets were at their best at the time Perfecto (the record label) were putting out their best stuff (BT, MWNN, Amoeba Assassin, Grace, Transa, etc. etc.) and Oakey had his residencies at Cream (1996-1998) and Home (1999-2000).

Playing to a crowd every week meant he tried new things. I recall him saying in an interview that he liked to try to incorporate D&B into his sets which wasn't the done thing at the time. Check out his Cream White (1996) and his GU:007 NY (1997) mixes for how well this could work.

A genuine golden period.

Re: Some Oakenfold gems

I never liked the Oakenfold Traveling CD. I thought the Ibiza one in 2002 was a lot better. The Ibiza CD is completely ruined by that awful U2 Beautiful Day track, if he had put the Brothers In Rhythm remix of Staring At The Sun on it, it would be a million times better. i think he just lost direction after that and never got it back.

#1289316Post 51 of 112

Re: Some Oakenfold gems

^ Agreed. The decline really started in 99/00 when he started playing crap like Bullet In The Gun, but a lot of his sets were good to passable, if not up to his on high standards, right up to around 2003/4 for me. I seem to remember the hour he had on the EM Ibiza Special in August 2003 as being pretty good.

The hit to miss ratio of the tracks he plays seems to increase as the years go by sadly. Still a legend for all he's given to the music scene though.

Re: Some Oakenfold gems

im sure the Glasgow set is fake...the way it starts, the way it ends, the tunes....i smell a rat, course, if anyone has listened to it right thru and hears a radio dj then apologies

i think he did play up here @ a club called 'room at the top' that year, and he also played a 'gig on the green' (glasgow green) festival set around the time which may well have been broadcast on the radio, but apart from that there is only one other recorded set i know of oakeys from around the era and that was recorded by me and labelled :

SET - 2001-06-22 Paul Oakenfold Live @ Colours @ The Arches

infact i tell a lie, when checking his folder on my pc i found this as well. If theres anyone that wants it, prolly best to pm me as i wont check this page again

SET - Paul Oakenfold 1999-12-19 Beat 106 Mix, Scotland.mp3

Re: Some Oakenfold gems

I ripped this from a CD Rom that I stole from a petrol station on Valentines day in 1999. Its only taken me 11 years to actually see this as I couldn't work out how to access it from the CD. I remember the night perfectly as I was on my way to see oakie at Ultra Vegas. As anyone who knows me can tell you I was unable to communicate by the end of the night.

Re: Some Oakenfold gems

that 2001 WMC set is definitely a favorite. I remember it was the first time i heard Flesh and Mekka....just blew my mind. really took trance in a new direction for me. That Trisco remix of Freet is still in my record box. Such a thumpin track.

Re: Some Oakenfold gems

Simply AWESOME Gatz!!!!! There was a mix Oakey made in Brazil in 2000. Starts off with some funky brazilian beats, and then midway sounds like Michael McDonald's voice " I feel sad today....so won't you touch me'..... I can't remember the mix, but I know it was from San Paulo, Brazil.

It was that Lost It.com - Animal track was his opener at many gigs in 00/01. It appeared on Cream Live 2 in 1996 and for some reason he decided to dig it out and start playing it again. He opened with it at Pacha in 2000 when I saw him there. Horrible track, I never liked it.
