Can't help smiling when I listen to this. Lots of memories with his Fluoro comp too, the first double-disc edm mix I bought. Woo hoo :CandyPop::RightOn:

Spot on mate, whatever Oakey is about now, he broke new ground with this mix. Classic.

Exactly. Not a lot of people have a sense of history when it comes to edm. Taken out of context, they only hear the cheese in Oakenfold. You can't diss a track like Grace - Not Over Yet or the kinda stuff Oakenfold was doing back then. :shock:8) It's great that Pete Tong picked this for a re-play.

Re: Essential Mix - 2007-12-26 - Paul Oakenfold

this mix is what got me into dance music proper, and it still sounds amazing today, not dated one little bit!

Total no brainer as for Emixes, this and Sasha @ Alexandria Palace plus the Howells mix for a few years back, 24:7 style.

This set is from 18 Dec 1994, Tong replayed it on 26 Dec 07.

Re: Essential Mix - 2007-12-26 - Paul Oakenfold

Oh No!! I've just spent hours trying to download from the megaupload link. Finally gave up went to freshly mixed , downloaded in 4.52 minutes and now you are telling me I downloaded the wrong one!! I thought it was 1997

Actually this one I'm listening to is pretty damn good. But the right one is sounding much much better again!!!

Nice! Downloading now. I only hope that Tong doesn't add voiceovers to it this time around......

Re: Essential Mix - 2007-12-26 - Paul Oakenfold

OK, Tong does do some voiceovers FYI. They don't sound too bad so far. The increase in sound quality over the original broadcast makes this definitely worth getting.

Really? I don't have a boot of the original broadcast, but I did buy that unofficial CD release a few years back (copied straight from the soundboard, no voiceovers). I assumed this was the version that had been ripped and made available online. Hmmm... may have to find a d/l of the rip in circulation and compare the two.

Incidentally - anyone else notice the Christmas 2007 replay is out of sequence? When the EM was first broadcast they had to allow for TWO news breaks, so all EMs were basically 30 mins / 1 hour / 30 mins mixes. This replay has basically played part1 then part 3 then part 2! How strange - the timeslot is still 2 hours so I'm not sure why they've done this.

Then again they fecked up the David Holmes rebroadcast too (there's an approximately 7 minute sequence in the second hour that gets played twice and they then have to fade the mix out early). A real shame as the original copy of that and the Daft Punk EM in circulation though listenable aren't brilliant. Maybe the original tapes aren't in great condition anymore?

Anyway, just a few observations!

Cheers, Ed.

The original CD Oakenfold wanted to release but there was no way of getting all the Samples cleared. So instead he knocked up a load of Cds that where given away at Cream in early 1995. These went on to be bootlegged and sold in the Cream shop.

I would assume though, that the soundboard copy would be the superior in terms of sound quality? That's why I was surprised by the comment that the Xmas re-run was a better sounding copy than what's already out there. I've never had any need to download this Emix personally, as I have the bootleg CD, so I assumed that it was a rip of the soundboard copy in circulation rather than a rip of someone's off-air tapes.

If it is the soundboard-sourced copy already in circulation, then I can't see how a rip of a more recent off-air copy could be classed as a better version.

All a bit anal and doesn't really matter either way - just seemed odd!
