If it's the least important why does he wear it? Surely he should let his music do the talking and not have to resort to gimmicks

Re: Redshape - Live @ Boiler Room, London (14.01.2014.)
Your transition from Sebastian Kramer to Redshape was quite noticeable musically (as well as the new look). How long had you been formulating the idea and the music of Redshape before you started under that name?

Redshape: The first, let’s call them “red,” tracks I made around 1999/2000. They were meant to be the counterweight to the more dark and relentless techno I was doing that time. This stuff was heavily influenced by the output of Kevin Saunderson and Juan Atkins under their different monikers, but always in close relation to the German roots like Tangerine Dream. So the moment I felt I had had enough, or in other words, people seemed to stop caring, I decided to leave loop techno. I started working on “The Playground” during the last of the “techno techno” stuff I made and this became the first Redshape track, more or less. Even the name Redshape was hidden somewhere in that track (musically).

Your civilian identity was revealed some years ago. Did you consider hanging up the mask after that or did you feel that the connotation of the mask was a strong enough image in people’s minds for them to associate that with your music more than who are or what you look like?

Redshape: I wouldn’t say it was “revealed.” It was more like people who just can’t stand the idea of a person hiding in global connected times threw out my name, knowing that this will somehow pull Redshape out of that “silly marketing bubble” into the known and judge-able world. But times have really changed; the audience is different now and that is really a good thing. Aside from what I initially wanted to create with the mask, now the mask kind of developed to its very own thing. It is for sure a “love-hate” relationship I have with it; it competes for attention when I not always want it, or at least not in that way.
... for me, is not really that much important... I really like this guy, mmmm how to call it, modern Detroit Techno sound, and that's it !!

It's hardly different, Daft Punk, Deadmouse, Joki whats his name and your mate Mike Banks

I seem to remember Sasha saying I would rather be known for my music than being the guy DJing hanging upside-down in a scuba diving outfit

More like coincidence than route to success
More like coincidence than route to success
So you're saying that the mask has nothing to do with his success. . . ? I cant agree more !! His mask draw attention of a wider audience, but his music makes him successful ... Let's not forget that this guy is not just a DJ, but also a great producer !!

As for Daft Punk, I know them for their older releases, Deadmouse, I heard about him only because of his costume, but I never liked his music, and neither Sasha's, when you already mentioned it !! All in all, they are commercial rubbish, of course, far my taste !!

So I'll get back to what I first said... Redshape mask is totally irrelevant !! I would go to the club to listen him because of his music, not because of his appearance !!

So he's trying to draw the attention of a wider audience! That could be interpreted as becoming commercial, because success usually is. What it also sounds like is that you're chewing on some idea that underground is somewhat better because it's underground. And if the mask is irrelevant why bother wearing it in the first place?
What it also sounds like is that you're chewing on some idea that underground is somewhat better because it's underground.
underground means nothing, its a clever way of driving people into believing they are paying homage to a movement that is hidden its commercialism under the moniker of "underground"

every artist on the planet wants to make money out of their music... thats the basic fact but its becoming harder for them to do so because of various reasons so anything that gives someone the edge or a little gimmick has to be a good thing for the artist

what virgil says about deadmau5 is right, he's more famed for his costume than he is his music

I'm SAYING, if you observe things from that perspective then nothing is "underground" ...Each artist creates so that someone else could hear his story, or feel what he feels, to convey an emotion or initiate and move someone... in essence, to reach the people ! What separates the "underground" from "commercial sector" is the purpose for doing that !

But I don't separate music to "underground" and "commercial"... there is music that I like and music that I don't like ! That's a matter of taste ! ...and if you had been on this forum for more than three days, you would know that such discussions do not take place here ! We don't hate someone else posts simply because we don't like that kind of music or we think something else is stupid. . .

I've heard of Redshape because another very well-known DJ and producent Laurent Garnier played his tracks a lot... quality usually goes with quality. . .

I saw your "fake" profiles, but I wanted to see if you were banned because of stupidity, or are you here just to act like an asshole... since this second is more likely, I have to admit, you really manage to do that !

Now you have contradicted yourself (like I knew you would)! It's funny how when someone has disagreed with something you say you have had to resort to name calling and "Grandfather Rights"

And you never asked about your second mistake LOL

Hate to point the obvious here but I wasn't disagreeing with anyone at that point in the thread. I was making a statement that people who go to clubs wanting to see a man in a mask are "Strange Fruit"

Going back a few years Mixmag (or Musik) used to have a monthly article called "Wanker Of The Month" where they would post a picture of someone whom they would refer to as "Wanker Of The Month" 9 most of the people featured were people who turned to clubs wearing some silly mask out of a horror film.
