Re: Guy J @ Space,Ibiza 28-08-2012

I find it really difficult to get into guy j's music... Is over-produced and lacks any melody in my view!

Re: Guy J @ Space,Ibiza 28-08-2012

what means "over-produced" ? Too many sound layers ?

Re: Guy J @ Space,Ibiza 28-08-2012

yeah exactly....but more than anything there's v few interesting hooks in his music...its just a bit bland for my taste... each to their own though eh

Re: Guy J @ Space,Ibiza 28-08-2012

I found it a bit on the monotonous side myself.
yeah exactly....but more than anything there's v few interesting hooks in his music...its just a bit bland for my taste... each to their own though eh
You are dead on about that (glad somebody finally said it). Since he's a darling of Digweed, he gets a free pass, and as a result even his urine is like a stream of liquid gold. ;)

His unnecessary 12-minute thumpathon remixes of prog gems from the past (the latest being Gill Norris' "Forme") are also getting mighty old.

I like a fair few of his productions but mostly they are just chinstroking 4-to-the-floor grinders with plenty of atmosphere but not much direction or variety.

DJ-ing wise, I can't think of much that separates him from the pack.

Re: Guy J @ Space,Ibiza 28-08-2012

Think he concentrates too much on building these atmospheric soundscapes (he does do that well) whilst forgetting to introduce change in rhythms or melody that make some music interesting to listen to. If you skim quickly through this mix you will probably realise theres v little going on

Guy J is one of a very few dj's who created their own dj style which is actually recognizable (think of Sasha), might want to check more of his sets from the past. You don't need to like his productions or remixes that all comes down to a personal taste. But dj-wise, he is very unique.

Re: Guy J @ Space,Ibiza 28-08-2012

You're right, I haven't heard much in the realm of his DJ sets (I mostly let the tracklists do the speaking), and I'll dig up a few more before adding any further commentary. ;)

Re: Guy J @ Space,Ibiza 28-08-2012

Try this though with this mix...skim through quickly 5-10 min gaps....i challenge you to see any big changes through the mix! A rare chord change maybe but thats as good as it gets. Think he's very good at creating a soundscape - when I first heard a mix of his I thought this would be my kind of music, but the lack of anything really going on killed that. As for a unique sound, I have heard many Sasha mixes from the last 20 years that have a similar sound, but that were a lot more interesting...ok, ill bow out now - said my bit!

Re: Guy J @ Space,Ibiza 28-08-2012

WOW..Interesting point of views here..but guys, don't forget that this is a warm-up set! And you are speaking of flow and ''lack of anything going on'' lol Do you even know what the meaning of a warm-up set is ??

Re: Guy J @ Space,Ibiza 28-08-2012

julesee, i am not comparing Guy J to Sasha, just saying his mixing is recognizable even if you don't know who's playing and that's pretty rare nowadays, don't you think. You don't need to explain yourself why you didn't like the set, every man to his taste. Although i would say that certain 'flatness' is necessary when warming up.

I don't think Sasha sounded similar to Guy J during any period of his career.

Re: Guy J @ Space,Ibiza 28-08-2012

I really have gotten into Guy J's DJing sound lately. I agree that not much goes on in some of his sets, but that is where I think the beauty lies in his sound. Some of it is very hypnotic in a good way. I rarely hear him play many vocals at all and for most part he almost never plays anything toooooo mainroom in my opinion...discounting his own massive productions LOL.

I recommend anyone who wants to at least give him an honest listen to check out the following:

Re: Guy J @ Space,Ibiza 28-08-2012

This set in particular, don't like it all, and doesn't sound like a warm up, sounds like a "hit hat" without end. very annoying.

Re: Guy J @ Space,Ibiza 28-08-2012

Most people here do not like this one, whereas I keep going back and listen it on a regular basis.

I would appreciate anyone who can identify the tack at 27 minutes. The one with the vocals " Purposeful Lady, Slow Afternoon" ? Amazing cHooN!!! Cheers in advance!

Re: Guy J @ Space,Ibiza 28-08-2012

I can't remember it and I've got too much new stuff to listn to at the moment .I know we all have different tastes but I am absolutely flabbergasted that anyone couldn't find melody in Guy's work. His success has little to do with Digweed, he has earn't every bit of it. This is of course my opinion , but for once I think I am on the side of a majority  As far as his Djing I have seen him on 5 ocassions now and I tend to be critical. The only time I didn't think he was great was the last time I saw him and that was because the clubs sound system is shit. It was a struggle.

Re: Guy J @ Space,Ibiza 28-08-2012

Wow, nothing like dredging up old debates. ;) My opinion hasn't changed. That recent compilation of all of his remixes basically reinforced my thoughts, and julesee pretty much nails it concerning the flatness. Sure, Guy is accomplished in the studio and good at making fluid transitions, but to ignore Digweed's contribution in jumpstarting his career is akin to ignoring Oakenfold's role in helping to put Cattaneo on the map.

#1706187Post 24 of 25

Re: Guy J @ Space,Ibiza 28-08-2012

I probably put that the wrong way, Digweed got involved because he thought Guy was great. As always he knew a good deal when he saw one. ;) I firmly believe Guy would have made big in any case. Hernan loves him as well.

Neither Guy or Hernan would have got the jumpstarting they did if they weren't considered to be great and that proved to be true !! :)

I can't deny that they know how to churn out seamless tapestries. Horses for courses as the brethren across the pond would say. ;)
