Canadian general to take NATO command of Libya

– 1 hr 20 mins ago TORONTO – A Canadian general will take over command of the NATO mission in Libya. Canadian Defense Minister Peter MacKay said Friday that Lt. Gen. Charles Bouchard has been designated to lead the alliance's military campaign in Libya.
Bouchard is stationed in Naples, Italy, at the Allied Joint Force Command.
Bouchard's recent job was deputy commander of NORAD, reporting to an American general.
"He will be commander of the NATO operations, yet to be fully defined NATO operations," MacKay said.
The international coalition confronting Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi has agreed to put NATO in charge of enforcing the no-fly zone. It was still trying to hammer out a deal to relieve U.S. forces of command of all military operations in the country.
U.S. President Barack Obama and Defense Secretary Robert Gates have both said that American command of the operations would last only a few days.
Re: Libya
How many US troops are being committed to NATO command? And why are people okay with having foreign generals commandeering American troops? What vestige of interest do they have in looking out for their best interests?
Re: Libya
^ i heard something like 2,200 US troops today.

2200 airmen? I thought the US said there is not going to be any ground troop commitment.
Re: Libya
i'm trying to find the source where i read that to back it up. there are so many things we have our hands in right now, i might have been mistaken that they were for libya. could have sworn though....
Re: Libya
this isn't the source i saw, but if you google '2200 us troops to libya' (based on what i remember the number being) there are several blogs reporting that a news outlet said there ARE marines going to libya. its either bad reporting or news the white house did not want to escape.

Evidence of Hitlery making power moves behind the scenes:
You invade Bahrain. We take out Muammar Gaddafi in Libya. This, in short, is the essence of a deal struck between the Barack Obama administration and the House of Saud.
Two diplomatic sources at the United Nations independently confirmed that Washington, via Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, gave the go-ahead for Saudi Arabia to invade Bahrain and crush the pro-democracy movement in their neighbor in exchange for a "yes" vote by the Arab League for a no-fly zone over Libya - the main rationale that led to United Nations Security Council resolution 1973.
Re: Libya
Uh oh, Gates is thinking about contributing a ground force to Libya:
http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2011/04/07/501364/main20051760.shtml
President Barack Obama has said repeatedly there will be no U.S. troops on the ground in Libya, although there are reports of small CIA teams in the country. Secretary of Defense Robert Gates told lawmakers last week that there would be no American ground troops in Libya "as long as I am in this job."
Ham disclosed that the United States is providing some strike aircraft to the NATO operation that do not need to go through the special approval process recently established. The powerful side-firing AC-130 gunship is available to NATO commanders, he said.
I guess he should be expecting a pink slip soon...if not, it will continue to reveal the lack of leadership that continues to putrefy the WH.
Re: Libya
lolwut, it directly says from the article that there would be no American ground troops in Libya "as long as I am in this job."
Re: Libya
Asked if the U.S. would provide troops, Ham said, "I suspect there might be some consideration of that. My personal view at this point would be that that's probably not the ideal circumstance, again for the regional reaction that having American boots on the ground would entail."

Re: Libya
Oh yes Canada and our 10 planes and two ships are leading the way.. This just proves my point about you Reso. Yes they are saying their is a Canadian commander leading the way of NATO. The US does this all the time to make it look like they are in the backseat and not the one driving the car.
Don't be foolish
