nah, ur wrong
well i MUST be wrong according to you. because if i'm right, then pretty much all hope is lost. i admire your exuberance for your green party, but i think it's slightly irrational on the best day. egypt has fled secularism, democracy, etc... I'd vote al wafd if i could, but my impression is that the ideals they promote do not find many open ears in cairo or giza or wherever. and for the obvious reasons.

Re: What is Going on in Egypt?

hahah al wafd? the newspaper, u based ur assumptions coz of the link for the picture?

well idk what they promote i just like the picture...lol, but u seem to know just like tahrir sq. being france or the uk, so yeah ur right man.

plus i really dont understand ur great concern in the first place, have u been this passionate about egypt before?

if you're not al wafd, a very liberal i.e. pro-democratic group in egypt, then you're views are likely to be less-democratic and therefore more problematic (at least to me).

I find it interesting that Obama said in a recent speech that the egyptians have a right to peaceful assembly, association, and speech and to determine their own destiny because they are human rights. I wonder where Obama stands on genital mutilation. Does Zero expect egypt to leap from traditional religious violence against female minors to a full, modern democracy? Looking back, I do recall it was Mubarak who demanded a total prohibition on genital mutilation a few years ago...for a SECOND time.....and was ultimately unsuccessful in his demands. That's because the egyptian population ignored this ban on genital mutilation. Even mubarak's wife was carrying out campaigns against this practice. No luck either. As it stands, between 8-9 out of 10 egyptian women have suffered genital mutilation. And the pre-eminent muslim scholars in egypt says this is the way to go! It might not be a muslim thing to do, but it most certainly is an egyptian-muslim thing to do.

Do you support this quiet rejection of Mubarak's authority? Do you think the middle class is more enlightened than Mubarak if they, in large parts, promote genital mutilation? It's funny to watch people cheer on this 'liberation' focusing on the few benefits that 'might' be gained while ignoring, in large part, what is likely to be lost.

I've begun to wonder whether it is Mubarak's hold on Egypt....or the general backwardness of the greater egyptian population....that is the problem here. how long will they cling to backwards traditions?

Do you think the illiterate class, the religious class, and the middle class know better how to run the country? Will they remove the prohibition on genital mutilation? will they permit religious fanaticism to return to the streets? Will they reverse all that mubarak has done to benefit egypt? (i'm not neglecting the problems he's created, but to ignore the good that he has brought and focus solely on the bad is lolworthy).

I've been interested in egypt here and there, and I know more about it than the typical liberal dick-stroker who thinks revolution automatically thinks 'AWESOME YAY!' But egypt, since the beginning of january, has been amazingly fascinating. it's like watching a slow car wreck. Can anyone possibly ignore it?

My optimism is slim. My doubts are high. Your optimism is high. your doubts are non-existent. I'm wondering....what is your ideal end-game in terms of where Egypt will be in 10 years (assuming mubarak leaves for good) and how do you pare that with the growing acceptance of traditional religious permeation in what was a more secular country many years ago?

edit: i knew it was not uk or france (not gonna say i knew it was actually at tahiri square) and yes i know they're praying. i guess i should could have been more transparent by asking "why are all these people looking for their contacts???"

http://apnews.myway.com/article/20110205/D9L6K1HG0.html

edit2: makes me wonder, where would things be now if instead of sending $1b in money, we sent $1b in wheat and food.

Re: What is Going on in Egypt?

well since u think tahrir sq is in the UK..then i see that u prob believe in this as well

"between 8-9 out of 10 egyptian women have suffered genital mutilation. " ,,,reaaalllyyyy? proof it, or should i refer to picture above.

but ill still answer ur lame attempt and picking a certain disadvantage caused by an uneducated group and highlight it, i really dont see what ur gain is in this point and it shows me more how pointless it is to debate or argue or even discuss anything with you and how does this point have anything to do with anything, i can do the same thing to most countries around the world and point out certain backwards acts and beliefs by the most uneducated but i chose not to coz its lameee and not on my level..

another thing it shows me that u really dont know much coz its not a middle class thing and no one really promotes it, that genitalia thing u brought up is an act that has been done mostly by the country people in egypt and its based on uneducated traditions and there has been many steps in trying to educate them about it thru small clinics, but wow man u really hit the jackpot there and put me on a spot, thanks for letting us know that there is uneducated people in egypt, duh...now there is no such thing as egyptian islam ok, there is Islam, and there is egyptian muslims ok, so separate the people from the religion, the religion dosent support such act so go find another point that u can hate on them for, just make sure u get the ones mostly based on uneducation, and please be more clear are u attacking Islam or egyptians. plus no egyptian really cares about that genitalia stuff right now, but i see why you would bring it up..and didnt u see the women all over the streets and in the protest so what religious violence are u talking about? but again i see why you would say this, its ok

and i personally dont ignore the goods Mubarak did, and u really are wrong with what u think im pro or anti or even the optimism part where i told u its wrong but u still insist, so maybe u know me more than i do, its just funny to see u act like u know it all and yet u use such words like "no, one in cairo or giza",.. lol the backwardness of the egyptian population also played a big role in the disadvantages in egypt as well, such as pollution and chaos (i dont see the relevance of ur genitalia discovery at all here),and its not something to be denied but again the system they had was pretty chaotic so...

and btw in the era of mubarak is when the terrorist attacks in egypt started and he didnt really stop it, and Egypt to you has been like watching a slow car wreck? just think a bit more man and look around you to see the real slow car wreck, and u dont have to look far.

next 10 yrs?! i dont even know if this whole world will be here in the next 10yrs, actually natural disasters around the world would be a more greater concern to me than what ur hinting at.

whats happening in egypt is a lot more than what u think it is, people have been starving there and my points are based on actual things coz ive seen it with m own eyes and not just read between the lines in some article. watever happens i just want people to go on with their normal lives, better opportunities, cleaner standard of living, better education, democracy in elections,...etc

would you want to have Obama for 30yrs?

thats totally a dictatorship view btw and especially coming from an american shows alot, u saying that the people are too dumb to know whats best for them and only the government knows whats best, you know where else ive seen this? take a wild guess...hey have u seen any UFO's lately btw!

man again these are ur assumptions, middle class do not support this in large and they dont really care right now about ur pointless point, there are more important issues at hand.

Re: What is Going on in Egypt?

to ask for a 'disadvantage' of the uneducated, look at sarah palin. only idiot proles like her. idiot religious[/] proles that is. and if you don't see the problem with that, then you'll hardly be convinced by anything i have to say about whether the uneducated know how to run a goddamn country lol

here: http://www.prb.org/Publications/Datasheets/2010/fgm2010.aspx

or wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Female_genital_cutting Egypt (78–97% prevalence, Type I, II and III)Egypt's Ministry of Health and Population has banned all forms of female genital cutting since 2007.[86] ...This law had proved ineffective and in a survey in 2000, a study found that 97% of the country's population still practiced FGC. In light of the widespread practice of FGC, even after the ban in 1997, some Egyptian villages decided to voluntarily give up the practice, as was the case with Abou Shawareb, which vowed in July 2005 to end the practice.[citation needed] However, it remains a culturally accepted practice, and a 2005 study found that over 95% of Egyptian women have undergone some form of FGC.

really? "not a middle class thing"? "no one really promotes it"? "mostly country people"? just look how well the education in small clinics have been working. how do you separate the people from the religion in this context? If this is PURELY an egyptian thing, and not a muslim thing (which i thought was clear when I qualified it as 'egyptian-muslim thing' above), then egyptians really ARE as uneducated as anyone could believe, even you who say only 'uneducated' people practice this....maybe this is the reason they protest? perhaps they want to decriminalize it (not that laws against it have ever stopped them - those are stats speaking, not me editorializing).

"plus no egyptian really cares about that genitalia stuff right now, but i see why you would bring it up..and didnt u see the women all over the streets and in the protest so what religion"

no, they were all covered up. in fact, i find quite the opposite...i see a woman here and there in a burqa, and even rarer to see one in plain clothing.

funny, that kinda reminds me of a few composites.

Does the progression of pictures help visually depict my concerns? Well I'm not sure really. Perhaps I haven't been clear enough.

If the Egyptians are going to continue backwards traditions such as cutting up clits, what real possibility is there that Egypt will become more modern, more democratic, more tolerant? I would love to be convinced that those who practice backwards traditions will promote modern notions of law, justice, economics, and rights. But i just don't see it happening.

As far as Mubarak stopping the terrorist bombing of the church - remind me, because my memory is fuzzy, was it that obscure pro-Mubarak faction that bombed them?

wait.

are you referring to the bombing at the beginning of the year? or the one that happened this afternoon?? http://www.google.com/hostednews/afp/article/ALeqM5hPaT1JdDF3whS6Psgi5DCnbsfkzw?docId=CNG.dd44e6d1778e89bd83fae9c562893653.861

I guess you'd blame Mubarak since, technically, it's still on his watch. I can't really argue against that if that's your stance.

I would prefer Obama for the next 30 years is the alternative was a member of the westboro baptist church.

Re: What is Going on in Egypt?

well the women are covered up by choice and they looooove Islam.

you know what your stats are wrong coz i personally know more than 10 women in Egypt and none of them have their clits cut, however i do know women in the states that have their clits pierced by choice tho...

but you win, the protest in Egypt is not really about the system and mubarak, its subliminally about FGM.

ffs im outta here

lol, do you NOT understand sarcasm? clearly i wasn't really suggesting they were actually protesting mubarak because of fgm. lol

either the women you know are not A) egyptian, or 2) they're lying (or did you mean the quaranic 'know') or D) given that you seem fairly secular (and i use that liberally here) you probably surround yourself with those who are more enlightened (as opposed to endarkened) and reject such traditional practices. who knows?

of course they love islam. it's second to none. i often deride christians for putting "christ before country". i don't think it's much of a stretch to apply the same to them. (allah before america/ lolwut)

there's a difference between women who voluntarily decided to shove a rod through their clit, and a girl who is forced to a doctor's office and having the procedure done. (do they even put them under, i wonder!)

I agree with you that radical Islam is a serious (but hardly the only) threat...the elite fan the flames by their attempts to meddle with those regimes and "democratize" them. Dictatorships there have brought stability, as much as it pains me to say it.

Hell no (I rarely drink...maybe once a year at most), and I'll stand by it 100%. If you really think 0bama and Biden are intellectuals of any significance, you must be on crack. The only credit 0bama gets is being shrewd at deception. Biden is a guffaw-uttering buffoon.

Re: What is Going on in Egypt?

I agree that Biden is a bit of a dimwit...Obama - impossible to tell...even if he was below average (but higher than Bush) we would all think he is a genius; his handlers make sure of that.

Biden is a smart guy. Smarter than Obama, in fact. I've spoken with him (biden) on two occassions (not gonna divulge details).

Obama's intelligence is purely in terms of abstractions - nothing concrete, nothing based in reality - all theory and almost always wrong.

Biden's intelligence can be measured in the abstract (though not to the degree that Obama's can) but is also a very practical person, and for the most part, down to earth. I half suspect that's why he was chosen to be vp.

I don't think i'd want biden to be president, but he's not a stuck up academic who can't learn and grow. He seems a lot more 'human' than Obama. (i'm not sure if that makes sense, but i can try to clarify it if you want).

#1461107Post 142 of 230

Re: What is Going on in Egypt?

Well, outward appearances and guffaws ("big effing deal" and let's recall what this was in response to, the partisan passage of HCR, which is under heavy attack from all angles) aren't everything apparently (same is said for Bush and his poor grammatical execution...sorry, Florida, as much as it may pain you to hear it and it gives me little satisfaction to admit that in retrospect). ;-) Mariner, you should perhaps reserve your Palin judgements until you've met her. :D All these public figures come across as buffoons to some degree, especially when media outlets are out to undermine them. Some are more deserving than others while still others commonly get a free pass.

#1461127Post 143 of 230

Re: What is Going on in Egypt?

perhaps dimwit was the wrong term for Biden...I think Cunt is more appropriate. What else can you call someone that knows he is lying and that his nation is essentially misinformed about an issue yet he plays into the popular stereotypes...not sure if there is a word for that? Politician?

Re: What is Going on in Egypt?

I have noticed that the coverage of the Revolution is beginning to take a back seat. I don't see the live footage or footage at all for that matter anymore in the headlines. The US must want this to go away and keep Mubarak in charge. That is what the media will do, they will show you it everyday for every hour and then nothing because the mind gets bored with the news and is looking for new news.

I have seen the Muslim Brotherhood mentioned at every turn though.

Let me fill you in on a little secret...

The economy isn't going to get better bonehead. It can't. Not with slave labor in China and China stealing all of your technology. The collapse of the US is certain. It is just a matter of time now. That is why the banks are looting the treasury. To get as much as possible before the collapse and to enslave the US.
