I would have to agree with Author Charles Hill in that Obama is America's first post-american president. Clip:

Hoover Institution research fellow Charles Hill traces the concept of equality to the mid-16th century debate on the Spanish treatment of Native Americans. He contends that American exceptionalism is valid, and accuses President Obama of not understanding the concept.

Re: Equality and Exceptionalism: Does Obama Understand America?

I was watching tennis recently on ESPN and Cliff Drysdale, South African commentator now American, said that growing up outside of America that he and others looked up to America. From personal experiences from traveling overseas, people I encounter still admire America and want to visit or live here.

It's still a great place to be, however there is some truth America isn't the great exception it used to be. Educational and quality of life diminishing, poor economy, immigration and unpopular wars have eroded that image. Things are better too with the election of the first black President and the Supreme Court beginning to fill the bench with women. I remember a quote from the Bible that goes something like this "Don't talk about the good old days, because they really weren't so great, focus on today".
