Twelve years after his now discredited claim in The Lancet that injections of the MMR vaccine against measles, mumps and rubella might cause autism and bowel disorders in children, Andrew Wakefield is closer than ever to being banned from practising as a doctor.
Will this finally get Jenny McCarthy to STFU? Nah.

Re: Damning verdict on doctor who linked MMR and autism

they now need to strike him off - aka remove his license to practice in the UK. he cant practice in the USA either - but still makes tonnes of money.

10 years too late - but a full retraction of the original paper

The Lancet said it now accepted claims made by the researchers were "false".

http://www.hollywoodlife.com/2010/02/26/jenny-mccarthy-says-her-son-evan-never-had-autism/

New Report Says: Jenny McCarthy’s Son May Not Have Had Autism After All
After years of speaking publicly about her belief that MMR shots (immunization for measles, mumps, and rubella) caused her son to suffer from autism, Jenny McCarthy now faces the reality that her 7-year-old son Evan — who no longer shows any signs of autism — may likely have lived with completely different illness. ... And she is also reversing her initial position that the MMR shots caused Evan’s autism. Jenny says she wants vaccinations better researched — rather than getting rid of them altogether. And though her son may never have had autism, Jenny insists, “I’ll continue to be the voice” of the disease.
Good job on convincing tons of people that perfectly good immunizations are a bad idea and are actually making disease rates go UP in middle to upper class kids for the first time in years instead of down. i think you should stick with hosting Singled Out. :handshake:

Re: Damning verdict on doctor who linked MMR and autism

finally! struck off the medical register in the uk - aka had his medical license revoked (for US analogy)

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/8695267.stm

The doctor who first suggested a link between MMR vaccinations and autism is to be struck off the medical register. The General Medical Council found Dr Andrew Wakefield guilty of serious professional misconduct over the way he carried out his controversial research. It follows a GMC ruling earlier this year that he had acted unethically. Dr Wakefield, who is now based in the US, has consistently claimed the allegations are unfair. He now says he will appeal against the verdict. His 1998 Lancet study caused vaccination rates to plummet, resulting in a rise in measles - but the findings were later discredited. The GMC ruled in January Dr Wakefield had acted "dishonestly and irresponsibly" in conducting his research, but under its procedures the sanctions are made at a later date. The case did not investigate whether Dr Wakefield's findings were right or wrong, instead it focused on the methods of research. The panel concluded that it is the only sanction that is appropriate to protect patients and is in the wider public interest

		                 			                      			                     	Dr Surendra Kumar

Panel chairman

During the two-and-a-half-year case, the longest in GMC history, he was accused of carrying out invasive tests on vulnerable children which were against their best interests.

The GMC also said Dr Wakefield, who was working at London's Royal Free Hospital as a gastroenterologist at the time, did not have the ethical approval or relevant qualifications for such tests. And the panel hearing the case took exception with the way he gathered blood samples. Dr Wakefield paid children £5 for the samples at his son's birthday party. It also said Dr Wakefield should have disclosed the fact that he had been paid to advise solicitors acting for parents who believed their children had been harmed by the MMR . Serious misconduct In making the verdict on the sanctions, Dr Surendra Kumar, the panel's chairman, said Dr Wakefield had "brought the medical professional into disrepute" and his behaviour constituted "multiple separate instances of serious professional misconduct". In total, he was found guilty of more than 30 charges. Dr Kumar also explained the reasoning for striking Dr Wakefield off.

"The panel concluded that it is the only sanction that is appropriate to protect patients and is in the wider public interest, including the maintenance of public trust and confidence in the profession, and is proportionate to the serious and wide-ranging findings made against him."

Dr Wakefield has consistently claimed the allegations against him were "unfounded and unjust". As the GMC announced its sanctions, Dr Wakefield said: "Efforts to discredit and silence me through the GMC process have provided a screen to shield the government from exposure on the MMR vaccine scandal." Two of his former colleagues at the Royal Free were also ruled to have broken guidelines. Professor John Walker-Smith and Professor Simon Murch both helped Dr Wakefield carry out the research. Professor Walker-Smith, who is 73 and has been retired for the past 10 years, was found guilty of serious professional misconduct and struck off the register. Professor Murch was found not guilty of serious professional misconduct despite there not being ethical approval for the research. In explaining this decision, Dr Kumar said he took into account the fact that Professor Murch stopped carrying out tests on children for the study because he did not think they were necessary. Professor Terence Stephenson, president of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health, said the scare over the vaccine had done "untold damage to the UK vaccination programme". "We cannot stress too strongly that all children and young people should have the MMR vaccine." The Department of Health reiterated this. A spokesman said: "The safety of MMR has been endorsed through numerous studies in many countries."

So, perhaps he was correct but that is of no concern? Those with children, best of luck with those vaccines!

His problem was his statistical analysis. Small sample size not at all representative of a population. It was like he said 'hey, here are some people with issues, but I won't take the proper scientific route to investigate them.' Regardless, thousands of researchers and money have been dumped into investigating thimerisol and other products in vaccines only to show that he was wrong.

Re: Damning verdict on doctor who linked MMR and autism

Boy are you guys ever proud of yourselves in this thread. Big Daddy now has to come in and rain on your parade.

  1. Vaccines aren't even close to 100% effective against catching the virus
  2. Many kids have died and woman having miscarriages from getting the vaccines. (Don't count those though)
  3. Most people are against the MMR vaccines not the whooping cough vaccine
  4. Many countries around the world are calling a halt to some vaccines because it is causing seizures http://www.telegraph.co.uk/health/healthnews/7918351/Flu-jab-linked-to-fits-in-under-fives-officials.html
  5. Some flu seasons (or virus seasons) are worse then others. Statistics are misleading. An "average" is exactly that--which means if on average 41,000 people die per year from the flu some years it will be 100,000 deaths and some will be 20,000.. Same with viruses like pertussis. The babies in California died before they were three months and babies aren't allowed to get their vaccine until 2 months of age. So things like this aren't alarming. They are tragic don't get me wrong and I feel awful for the families but they couldn't get the vaccine anyway.

Didi did you take your drama pill this morning or what??? "How many more children have to die?" you ask? What about all the miscarriages from vaccines? Do those babies count? Also I thought it was Global warming? Is it climate change now? Is the earth getting warmer or cooler? Climate change is pretty broad isn't it. I mean the weather changes all the time - - Meaning the "climate changes" all the time. Stop drinking the crazy Kool Aid.

its a typical sigh because your points are irrelevant. its pretty much the last and definitive study that the two items listed are in no way related to autism, everything else is just unrelated noise.

also debate? the dude has already had his license revoked by his peers, no sense in giving his nonsense more air time.

thimerosal and other adjuvents.

You know what is funny is that I should be the one who should be getting sick of taking you to school.. You should be saying "damn it he did it again to me"

Hint - Watch the relationship between thimerosal plus more vaccines and the rise of autism,. It went from 1 case in every 2500 to 1 in every 160.

Re: Damning verdict on doctor who linked MMR and autism

Since ANOTHER study from ANOTHER group of people who actually know science, study science, practice the scientific method just published ANOTHER report of evidence that this just isn't true that is the end of the debate.

Its funny even in the articles listed above it states that there isn't a huge uproar from the anti vaccine contingent about this, because they are finally coming to the realization that they are flat out wrong.

It is fun to beat the point to death in this thread though.

From the article:
Perhaps it is the fall of Andy Wakefield that has led to an apparent resurgence of the concept that mercury in TCVs somehow causes autism, after having faded into the background after the CDC and AAP recommended that thimerosal be removed from all childhood vaccines in 1999 and the last TCV having expired towards the end of 2001. After all, if the hypothesis that TCVs cause autism had been correct, we should have expected to see a marked decrease in the incidence of autism and autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) within about 5 years of 2002, given that the vast majority of cases of ASDs are diagnosed between the ages of 2 and 5. We have not, and, even though its adherents have kept moving the goalposts back regarding the date that we should start to see a leveling off and drop in the incidence of ASDs, starting with 2005, then 2007, and now, apparently, 2011 (which is only less than four months away, by the way), even Jenny McCarthy’s anti-vaccine organization originally founded by J.B. Handley and his wife, namely Generation Rescue, began demphasizing mercury in 2007, after having stated flatly on its website that autism is a “misdiagnosis for mercury poisoning” for so long. Since then, “too many, too soon” has been the favored propaganda talking point.
Re: Damning verdict on doctor who linked MMR and autism

Look I get both sides of this debate and I'm not gonna say whats right or wrong. I can only go off my own personal experience and @ 1 year old my son hit all his milestones & then some. after he got his vaccines came a rash, fever, and 4 days later a different child. diagnosed with severe autism 6 months later. Obviously the vaccines save lives but also have a component in altering many others. People need to do their homework and make there own decision. I got into a heated exchange with my kid's dr. when she was trying to force the shots on my daughter (11 months younger than my son), she finally got the rest of hers @ 3years old. BTW after years of therapy and special schools they say my son should show no signs of autism in a year or two. But I wouldn't wish what my son and family have endured on anyone.

#1413076Post 31 of 43

Re: Damning verdict on doctor who linked MMR and autism

why would that scare you Didi? My generation received about 12 vaccines in total and we came out alright, my son will get the same.

Now a days they want 22 vaccines before they are 1 years old and 32 by the time they are 18 months. No thx. He will DTap same as I did

MMR No thank you. I will take my chances of measles mumps or rubella. Remember folks just because he doesn't get the shot doesn't mean he is going to get it for sure or that he will die from it even if he gets it. In fact vaccines have been proven to not be nearly as effective as people think in preventing outbreaks. Much of it has to do with modern hygiene. I never received the MMR vaccine and never got any of it. How is this possible Didi? If anything i will wait until he is about to go to school (4 years old) to get it.

The only time I would consider getting more vaccines is if the water supply became contaminated because of the economic downturn. Other then that colloidal silver, Vitamin D and C with Greens Plus Multi Vitamin and a somewhat healthy diet and go from there..

Congrats Coleby on the great news!!

Re: Damning verdict on doctor who linked MMR and autism

http://www.cnn.com/2011/HEALTH/01/05/autism.vaccines/index.html

Retracted autism study an 'elaborate fraud,' British journal finds

Excerpt:
B -- A now-retracted British study that linked autism to childhood vaccines was an "elaborate fraud" that has done long-lasting damage to public health, a leading medical publication reported Wednesday. An investigation published by the British medical journal BMJ concludes the study's author, Dr. Andrew Wakefield, misrepresented or altered the medical histories of all 12 of the patients whose cases formed the basis of the 1998 study -- and that there was "no doubt" Wakefield was responsible.

"It's one thing to have a bad study, a study full of error, and for the authors then to admit that they made errors," Fiona Godlee, BMJ's editor-in-chief, told CNN. "But in this case, we have a very different picture of what seems to be a deliberate attempt to create an impression that there was a link by falsifying the data."

Britain stripped Wakefield of his medical license in May 2010. Efforts to reach him for comment were unsuccessful Wednesday. "Meanwhile, the damage to public health continues, fueled by unbalanced media reporting and an ineffective response from government, researchers, journals and the medical profession," BMJ states.

The now-discredited paper panicked many parents and led to a sharp drop in the number of children getting the vaccine that prevents measles, mumps and rubella. Vaccination rates dropped sharply in Britain after its publication, falling as low as 80 percent by 2004. Measles cases have gone up sharply in the ensuing years.
