The media reports that a few thousand were in attendance but the pictures don't lie. Hundreds of thousands were in attendance. Media must have missed this one.

what are you laughing at? Where is the media on this one?

Go turn on CNN.. you wouldn't even know that the tea party was even going on. They are talkinga bout Airport security instead.

Re: Hundreds of Thousands at Tea Party on Washington

this is the same as left wingers taking the streets when bush was in office, nothing new.

the only difference is that in these "tea parties" they dont seem to be arresting people or calling them out to be hecklers or rioters.

Whatever the number is that picture looks like a lot of people. People exercising their constitutional right to protest and demonstrate peacefully.

Demonstrating peacefully this time, anyway...

Definitely a good sized crowd. Definitely not "hundreds of thousands," though.

Perhaps one day it will be necessary. Lets hope and pray it's not during our life time.

Re: Hundreds of Thousands at Tea Party on Washington

your right toasty it was more like 2 million according to the media in the UK. Check out Lorn's link it says up to 2 million. Toasty why do you always have to look at the negative of what was a million person very peaceful protest? It even caught the police off guard.

How could this be? Who is right the US media or the UK media?

Re: Hundreds of Thousands at Tea Party on Washington

be realistic man, look at the pictures, that doesnt look like "millions" yes its a big crowd, but i doubt theres more than 20 to 30 thousand.

when obama did the speach in germany where he supposedly gathered 300,000, the crowd looked at least 20 to 30 times bigger than this crowd, so i doubt there was "millions".

Re: Hundreds of Thousands at Tea Party on Washington

According to this ABC news article, DC fire department folks who were on site estimated it at 60,000 to 70,000.

http://abcnews.go.com/Politics/tea-party-protesters-march-washington/story?id=8557120

Random thought: I wonder how many of the 60-70 thousand at that protest railing against "Socialism" are on Medicare, Medicaie, or any other US social programs (like unemployment benefits, etc.) - or have family members who are?

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/graphic/2009/01/19/GR2009011900114.html

Well, going by this estimate of how many people fit in the mall and talking with my father today who was down there whose anecdotal view was the entire mall was filled with people (I have no way of verifying that), I'd say there was a lot more people protesting then is being reported.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/worldnews/article-1213056/Up-million-march-US-Capitol-protest-Obamas-spending-tea-party-demonstration.html
Up to two million people marched to the U.S. Capitol today, carrying signs with slogans such as "Obamacare makes me sick" as they protested the president's health care plan and what they say is out-of-control spending. The line of protesters spread across Pennsylvania Avenue for blocks, all the way to the capitol, according to the Washington Homeland Security and Emergency Management Agency.
So why all the discrepancy?

There's a lot of people there, no question, but the photos there do not depict "hundreds of thousands of people." They just don't. The crowd isn't near dense enough. I'll give you "tens of thousands," but it ain't 2 million, or even close. Obama's inauguration, for example, was estimated at 1.8 million, and that included a dense swath of people along the parade route through DC, plus the capitol grounds, steps and mall packed in like sardines. This isn't in that same realm.

And I'm not "looking at the negative," we're talking about a matter of empirical fact here. I could honestly care less if a dozen people or 2 million people showed up, but when you're just making shit up, I feel compelled to call you out on it.

Toasty didn't you see the link? I'm not making it up. I'm glad you will give me 10's of thousands but I'm pretty sure it is in the hundreds of thousands. I would say 400,000. Not 2 million or 60,000.

You see it is all about compromise. Also next time you want to call me out on shit make sure you check the links provided.;):D

Re: Hundreds of Thousands at Tea Party on Washington
The image is real but it does not represent the Tea Party protests but one that happened before 2005:
There's another big problem with the photograph: it doesn't include the National Museum of the American Indian, a building located at the corner of Fourth St. and Independence Ave. that opened on Sept. 14, 2004. (Looking at the photograph, the building should be in the upper right hand corner of the National Mall, next to the Air and Space Museum.) That means the picture was taken before the museum opened exactly five years ago. So clearly the photo doesn't show the "tea party" crowd from the Sept. 12 protest.

Re: Hundreds of Thousands at Tea Party on Washington

I think both sides are lying. I'll guess it's in the tens maybe hundereds of thousands at most. The liberal media which is pretty much all the media in America underreported and Michelle Malkin was saying it was in the millions which I doubt as well.

Btw, anyone else sick of these conservative political books taking up all the shelf space and attention recently at the book store? I tried to buy a book the other day for a trip and all I could find were guys like Dick Morris, Malkin and that lunatic Glen Beck. Obama becoming President was the best thing to happen for these "authors".

You want to compromise on how many people were there? If I think 2+2=4, and you think it equals 6, we do not just agree to settle on 5.

I did see the link. I also saw the other link that listed a much smaller number. And I saw photographs that purport to be from this event but that are actually from a different event entirely. Again, though, I really don't care how many people there were -- clearly, there were a lot of wingnuts out there that day, so more power to them. I'm just in this thread because I enjoy the thoughtful dialog you provide.

#1272868Post 23 of 34

Re: Hundreds of Thousands at Tea Party on Washington

thanks I'm glad I could provide you with info.. that is what I do on here.

Again here we go with the the left vs. right.. "wingnuts" are sick of socialism for the rich and capitalism for the poor. wingnuts are sick of seeing Obama and Bernanke say the economy has stabilized when foreclosures are up and unemployment is constantly going up. Wingnuts are sick of empty promises like pulling out of Iraq only to move them to Afghanistan.

Do you see where I am going with this Toasty? Probably not so I will spell it out. The guy is a liar and they are sick of it. I have said it many times on here. The "wingnuts(aka American citizens)" have lost faith in their gov't.

Also when wallstreet goes up 3000 points in 6 months and we live in a boom bust world what do you think is going to happen next? One word Correction.

Re: Hundreds of Thousands at Tea Party on Washington

So just a rhetorical question here... when we say this is a great example of the media lying and we post up picture of stuff from 4 years ago... then which side is it exactly that is doing the lying here??

I'm a little confused here...what picture are you referring to? RM didn't post any pictures that I can see. He posted a youtube video which has an off angle shot of the pic Thrax is talking about. Is that what Thrax is disputing? The link to the article I posted had a picture in it which is clearly not the photo Thrax is referencing in his post.

Also, the article I posted the link to has changed its headline and its text. It still calls the number 1 million but not "up to 2 million".

I understand everyone here has their issue's with RM but I'm witnessing a bit of uncalled for ganging up in this particular thread.

The original question, which is still going through my mind, is why the huge discrepancies on the reporting of numbers within the media? Simple question and I'm not jumping to any radical conclusions nor do I want to be jaded towards the media and their bias. It would just be nice to have a feeling of confidence in what is being reported and not have to resort to my own verifications. Sad really.

Here is a time lapsed video from a traffic camera on 14th street. Again don't know how to verify this.

Re: Hundreds of Thousands at Tea Party on Washington

Also Toasty something else to consider anout these so called wingnuts;

Bush's approval rating as a whole was around 30-35% that means that 7 out of 10 americans republican or democrat didn't like him either. So these protesters aren't just right wing radicals angry they lost the election... just some more food for thought.

yea, I think something got fucked in teh post.. or I thought you were talking about another pic..

I dont browse the news, I aggregate it. it comes to me

so, if that is an error in my photo reply, sorry.. but its just what I found to be highly informative

there is a big diference with "approving" of his work and not "liking him". Also, when you get into numbers you would have to take out of those numbers people that didnt vote, yet theyre still out there complaining about shit they dont seem to know anything about.

im just amused at how ignorant some of these crowds can get, at least the leftwingers protested simple shit like "war" nothing to complicated about that, but some of these folks talking about nazism and facism and how the Obama is becoming Hittler.....

Fun Fact: 99.9% of protesters who use the word "fascism" have no idea what it actually means and/or misuse it.
