Re: China Made GM cars Sold to US in 2 Years
I cant believe this shit...the government gave them 15 billion so that they could file for bankruptcy and outsource or even sell out to China...thats fucked up.
Re: China Made GM cars Sold to US in 2 Years
Didn't GM shut down its plant in Flint, Michigan in the 1980's because they outsourced costing 30,000 US people their jobs and economically devastating the city in a year when GM made record profits?
Re: China Made GM cars Sold to US in 2 Years
this is Obama's plan remember he fired Wagoner. I want to hear the explanation for this.
Re: China Made GM cars Sold to US in 2 Years
wether the chinese or americans are making the cars, one thing is for certain, GM sucks.
Re: China Made GM cars Sold to US in 2 Years
we need a little eco-mobile that is cheap to make and runs on biofuels.. unfortunately, we can't do that..
we're not an Iron detroit city anymore... GM makes and engineers stuff pretty shitty. think of it as what IBM did with Lenovo...
Re: China Made GM cars Sold to US in 2 Years
^^you don't have the slightest idea of what you are talking about.. China is dying to buy the GM technology.
Re: China Made GM cars Sold to US in 2 Years
According to reports from both the New York Times and Politico, the Obama Administration plans to announce new CAFE regulations tomorrow that will finally reconcile both federal and state standards. The plan is expected to combine California's strict emission rules with the federal rule, raising the national fleet mileage to around 42 mpg for cars and approximately 26 mpg for light trucks by 2016 – an increase over the current standards of 27.5 mpg for cars and 24 mpg for trucks.
The administration set a self-imposed deadline of June 30 to grant California's request to impose the state's standard to the federal CAFE regulations, and according to the NYT, the auto industry isn't expected to challenge the new rules as they finally set both a definitive time table and a national standard. Politico is reporting that the Obama Administration sat down with several states and a number of domestic and foreign automakers to discuss the standard, including Chrysler, Ford, General Motors, BMW and others. California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger is expected to attend the announcement on Tuesday, at which point all the hard details will be released.

(I think the move to China is smart btw, GM is a brand, regardless of where the car is made, what no marketing guru's on MS? Big surprise there...)
Re: China Made GM cars Sold to US in 2 Years
its not Japan its China mate...and IMO its not about GM and the brand its about the US economy. How many people will lose jobs on account of this? and whats gonna happen to the other car manufacturers in the US?

Did you even read that article you pasted?
I dont see Obama's name mentioned at all in that article... why are you assuming this is 100% Obama's plan like you are alleging? To me, this is business, GM is suffering immensely and see's China as an opportunity to gain sales or possibly sell brands that they are losing money on.
This is business 101 here. In case you didnt know, companies are everywhere, its a global economy. Businesses cant strive staying in 1 country if they want to compete with the big dogs.
Re: China Made GM cars Sold to US in 2 Years
did you read what I posted?? Obama fired Wagoner the former ceo of GM because Wagoner wouldn't go a long with the Obama Plan.
If this is business 101 then I guess America is way behind since we pay our workers a wage that goes with the American Dream. Poor Wi and Li are getting .25 cents a day to work.
Are you pro Slavery ddr? You sound it with your "this is business 101" comment.

So you are saying paying someone to stand all day and make sure a machine does the job right $50 an hour is fair to other hard workers in America that make a quarter of that for harder work? Im not saying the Chinese are fair, of course their wages are whack but paying Joe Detroit $100K for doing work anyone can do is ludacris. Its the Union's fault for strangling our auto industry but GM and Ford agreed to it ultimately. It is because of the Union's that GM is looking overseas for opportunities, blame them not Obama.
And for the record, I am not pro-slavery... and I honestly have no idea where you get that insinuation from my comments above.
If you think GM are pro-slavery for going overseas, then you might as well blame 80% of the other companies out there.
So you are saying paying someone to stand all day and make sure a machine does the job right $50 an hour is fair to other hard workers in America that make a quarter of that for harder work?.
I don't know what car factory you have been to but I've never seen anyone standarding around all day making sure the machine does its job right. Most people in the Car Manufacturing industry working line side are given a process with a cycle time of 80 seconds and they don't have anytime to stand around. If they do they have extra work added to their process. The work is very labour intensive and soul destroying. Yeah in the last 20 years more machinery has been added but not to make the worker's job easy but to eliminate the worker. Pay in the Car Manufacturing Industry had been high in the past as historically because no one wanted to do it similar to working on Oil Rigs. Last year it was claimed that Associates (Line side workers) at Honda America where being paid overblown amounts of money in the media. When I looked into this it turned out to be complete nonsense and actually less than half of of what was actually claimed.
Re: China Made GM cars Sold to US in 2 Years
If you think GM are pro-slavery for going overseas, then you might as well blame 80% of the other companies out there.
Yes, you might as well blame them, because the trend of outsourcing all manufacturing jobs overseas has been going on for some time now.
I have to say, guys, that runningman and Shpira have a point on this one: this outsourcing trend is not good for America, and it does not help Obama's plan to get the US out of the economic rut that it is in.
It may be business 101, but business can have winners and it can have losers. Maybe the auto worker has been overpaid, but there is an inescapable broader trend going on:
It used to be the case that the US blue collar worker could make a living in industry; now, those jobs are all gone and the living standard of the blue collar worker has been on a steady decline ever since. That means that US workers have lower real comparative wages, less discretionary spending power, and less consumption. And by contrast, Chinese and others will start to experience comparative wage growth, more spending power, and more consumption. Hell, they already pretty much own our entire debt. It's a natural equilibrium adjustment in a global economy, and it probably can't be stopped at this point.
But we should consider that it does not make the US necessarily better off. What is that entire blue collar segment of America going to do for a living now? Green jobs? Please. Wal Mart employee is more like it...for one fifth the wage (not a living wage) and no benefits.
Re: China Made GM cars Sold to US in 2 Years
My employer Honda UK Manufacturing recently stated in on local news that the average Associate at Honda UK was earning 30% more than I actually earn and I earn more than the average employee.
Re: China Made GM cars Sold to US in 2 Years
capitalism has failed.
Re: China Made GM cars Sold to US in 2 Years
no it hasn't
It hasn't been allowed to work since the bailouts began. Capitalism is based on things failing. When you don't let things fail then you are in a socialism for the rich type format. What we are learning is that socialism doesn't work. You can't bailout bad companies all the time. Citi-AIG-GM-Chrysler they all should have failed. Restructuring would have been a better way to spend the money rather than waste it on toxic assets.
Honestly I hope the US gov't figures out what they are going to do because I fear that the second half of 2009 and all of 2010 are going to be a complete disaster. Worse then what I feared 6 months ago.
Re: China Made GM cars Sold to US in 2 Years
^It's not unlikely that 2009-2010 will have more growing pains...what are you doing to be part of the solution is what I find interesting.
-This issue is so multifaceted nearly every response is just a symptom of another issue. Unless someone is ready to post a 100 page dissertation on the subject Miroslav, this is nothing more than a thread for people to post their opinions, in which we are all entitled to. The other alternative to the 100 page essay is to respond with 3 words.
Re: China Made GM cars Sold to US in 2 Years

There are just some extreme cases dealing with certain financial institutions where we know my opinion differs.
But be that as it may...my other broad thought is: as far as the shipping of US jobs overseas, that trend does not mean that capitalism is "broken"; it's actually a natural reflection of capitalism working in a global system. It's just that the consequences are not necessarily equally pleasant for all participants...most notably the US.
Re: China Made GM cars Sold to US in 2 Years
@ runningman
It seems to me that you guys are over looking one important issue. The people should not serve the system, the system should serve the people. I wonder what the US folks will live on when all jobs are outsourced to save the "American" ideas ...they can't all join the military.
You say that socialism has failed? what Socialism???????????? So what, you believe in total deregulation? Isn't the reason we are in this mess in large part due to the fact that there wasn't enough regulation?
If we lived in a world according to you everyone in the US would be either working for about 2$ per day or starving. Honestly I don't understand what exactly you are propagating here?
I am really curious what exactly you think should be done. All you do is criticize and propose what to me sound like pretty fucking stupid ideas...no offense its just how they sound...maybe if you explain a little what steps the governments should take or lets make it "simpler" steps the US government should take???
Re: China Made GM cars Sold to US in 2 Years
What I am proposing is letting the system work. Let things fail and the good assets will be picked up by good companies. If I had all the answers I would be a miracle worker but I know one thing is that in order for this to fix itself you have to let things fail.
I will respond later in more detail I don't have the time right now.

werent you the one whining and screaming about the government ignoring the auto industry a couple months ago? now once the government tries to help them out you say you wish they let them fail.
make up your fuckin mind dude.
Re: China Made GM cars Sold to US in 2 Years
Wait a sec... the two articles you put forward have somewhat opposing arguments. If the government buys GM the Chinese won't be able to buy it and it most likely will not be moved to China!
Hooray the US is becoming increasingly socialist! The government is nationalizing the Auto Industry...lol. No this actually makes economical sense investing Government money into the economy to boost it...as long as its done well its a good plan. It makes more sense then creating temporary jobs in the construction and what not + its not pointless. Its a real investment. i was wondering how else he could boost spending...considering the US now days has electricity and roads unlike during FDR. So this is pretty much the only way to pump money in. It makes sense.
Lets just hope that they can bring some good policies to make sure it doesn't go bankrupt as a government owned company which would be really bad...and cost Obama a hell of a lot of points.
Re: China Made GM cars Sold to US in 2 Years
no no no.. I said if you are going to give money away to companies like Citi and AIG that why not give it to the autos that employ tons of people. I wasn't for any of it in the beginning.
Nothing makes sense anymore when it comes to business. Globalization ---- No US only, no not US only.. who fucking knows.
Re: China Made GM cars Sold to US in 2 Years
[this is just a random thought]
we are going to re-engineer the shit out of America.. *we'll make a kickass small eco-green car, employ tons of people in the new green detroit to build it. maybe it will be like the Mini of the UK.. so popular. we invest in green fuel, or solar/plug in hybrid. or bio-fuels..
maybe.. it will be a Chevy? or a FIAT/Chrysler...
in a perfect world, right? where's my flying car?
Re: China Made GM cars Sold to US in 2 Years
Sorry if it´s been posted before :
June 1, 2009
I write this on the morning of the end of the once-mighty General Motors. By high noon, the President of the United States will have made it official: General Motors, as we know it, has been totaled.
As I sit here in GM's birthplace, Flint, Michigan, I am surrounded by friends and family who are filled with anxiety about what will happen to them and to the town. Forty percent of the homes and businesses in the city have been abandoned. Imagine what it would be like if you lived in a city where almost every other house is empty. What would be your state of mind?
It is with sad irony that the company which invented "planned obsolescence" -- the decision to build cars that would fall apart after a few years so that the customer would then have to buy a new one -- has now made itself obsolete. It refused to build automobiles that the public wanted, cars that got great gas mileage, were as safe as they could be, and were exceedingly comfortable to drive. Oh -- and that wouldn't start falling apart after two years. GM stubbornly fought environmental and safety regulations. Its executives arrogantly ignored the "inferior" Japanese and German cars, cars which would become the gold standard for automobile buyers. And it was hell-bent on punishing its unionized workforce, lopping off thousands of workers for no good reason other than to "improve" the short-term bottom line of the corporation. Beginning in the 1980s, when GM was posting record profits, it moved countless jobs to Mexico and elsewhere, thus destroying the lives of tens of thousands of hard-working Americans. The glaring stupidity of this policy was that, when they eliminated the income of so many middle class families, who did they think was going to be able to afford to buy their cars? History will record this blunder in the same way it now writes about the French building the Maginot Line or how the Romans cluelessly poisoned their own water system with lethal lead in its pipes.
So here we are at the deathbed of General Motors. The company's body not yet cold, and I find myself filled with -- dare I say it -- joy. It is not the joy of revenge against a corporation that ruined my hometown and brought misery, divorce, alcoholism, homelessness, physical and mental debilitation, and drug addiction to the people I grew up with. Nor do I, obviously, claim any joy in knowing that 21,000 more GM workers will be told that they, too, are without a job.
But you and I and the rest of America now own a car company! I know, I know -- who on earth wants to run a car company? Who among us wants $50 billion of our tax dollars thrown down the rat hole of still trying to save GM? Let's be clear about this: The only way to save GM is to kill GM. Saving our precious industrial infrastructure, though, is another matter and must be a top priority. If we allow the shutting down and tearing down of our auto plants, we will sorely wish we still had them when we realize that those factories could have built the alternative energy systems we now desperately need. And when we realize that the best way to transport ourselves is on light rail and bullet trains and cleaner buses, how will we do this if we've allowed our industrial capacity and its skilled workforce to disappear?
Thus, as GM is "reorganized" by the federal government and the bankruptcy court, here is the plan I am asking President Obama to implement for the good of the workers, the GM communities, and the nation as a whole. Twenty years ago when I made "Roger & Me," I tried to warn people about what was ahead for General Motors. Had the power structure and the punditocracy listened, maybe much of this could have been avoided. Based on my track record, I request an honest and sincere consideration of the following suggestions:
We are now in a different kind of war -- a war that we have conducted against the ecosystem and has been conducted by our very own corporate leaders. This current war has two fronts. One is headquartered in Detroit. The products built in the factories of GM, Ford and Chrysler are some of the greatest weapons of mass destruction responsible for global warming and the melting of our polar icecaps. The things we call "cars" may have been fun to drive, but they are like a million daggers into the heart of Mother Nature. To continue to build them would only lead to the ruin of our species and much of the planet.
The other front in this war is being waged by the oil companies against you and me. They are committed to fleecing us whenever they can, and they have been reckless stewards of the finite amount of oil that is located under the surface of the earth. They know they are sucking it bone dry. And like the lumber tycoons of the early 20th century who didn't give a damn about future generations as they tore down every forest they could get their hands on, these oil barons are not telling the public what they know to be true -- that there are only a few more decades of useable oil on this planet. And as the end days of oil approach us, get ready for some very desperate people willing to kill and be killed just to get their hands on a gallon can of gasoline.
President Obama, now that he has taken control of GM, needs to convert the factories to new and needed uses immediately.
Don't put another $30 billion into the coffers of GM to build cars. Instead, use that money to keep the current workforce -- and most of those who have been laid off -- employed so that they can build the new modes of 21st century transportation. Let them start the conversion work now.
Announce that we will have bullet trains criss-crossing this country in the next five years. Japan is celebrating the 45th anniversary of its first bullet train this year. Now they have dozens of them. Average speed: 165 mph. Average time a train is late: under 30 seconds. They have had these high speed trains for nearly five decades -- and we don't even have one! The fact that the technology already exists for us to go from New York to L.A. in 17 hours by train, and that we haven't used it, is criminal. Let's hire the unemployed to build the new high speed lines all over the country. Chicago to Detroit in less than two hours. Miami to DC in under 7 hours. Denver to Dallas in five and a half. This can be done and done now.
Initiate a program to put light rail mass transit lines in all our large and medium-sized cities. Build those trains in the GM factories. And hire local people everywhere to install and run this system.
For people in rural areas not served by the train lines, have the GM plants produce energy efficient clean buses.
For the time being, have some factories build hybrid or all-electric cars (and batteries). It will take a few years for people to get used to the new ways to transport ourselves, so if we're going to have automobiles, let's have kinder, gentler ones. We can be building these next month (do not believe anyone who tells you it will take years to retool the factories -- that simply isn't true).
Transform some of the empty GM factories to facilities that build windmills, solar panels and other means of alternate forms of energy. We need tens of millions of solar panels right now. And there is an eager and skilled workforce who can build them.
Provide tax incentives for those who travel by hybrid car or bus or train. Also, credits for those who convert their home to alternative energy.
To help pay for this, impose a two-dollar tax on every gallon of gasoline. This will get people to switch to more energy saving cars or to use the new rail lines and rail cars the former autoworkers have built for them.
Well, that's a start. Please, please, please don't save GM so that a smaller version of it will simply do nothing more than build Chevys or Cadillacs. This is not a long-term solution. Don't throw bad money into a company whose tailpipe is malfunctioning, causing a strange odor to fill the car.
100 years ago this year, the founders of General Motors convinced the world to give up their horses and saddles and buggy whips to try a new form of transportation. Now it is time for us to say goodbye to the internal combustion engine. It seemed to serve us well for so long. We enjoyed the car hops at the A&W. We made out in the front -- and the back -- seat. We watched movies on large outdoor screens, went to the races at NASCAR tracks across the country, and saw the Pacific Ocean for the first time through the window down Hwy. 1. And now it's over. It's a new day and a new century. The President -- and the UAW -- must seize this moment and create a big batch of lemonade from this very sour and sad lemon.
Yesterday, the last surviving person from the Titanic disaster passed away. She escaped certain death that night and went on to live another 97 years.
So can we survive our own Titanic in all the Flint Michigans of this country. 60% of GM is ours. I think we can do a better job.

Re: China Made GM cars Sold to US in 2 Years
This bankruptcy may ironically be the best thing that could happen for GM's long-term future. The brand has taken such a beating over many, many years, that it really needed something dramatic and game-changing to happen.
Does this mean I'm going to rush out and buy a GM car at the earliest possible opportunity? Uh, no. I'll say this, though -- in the absence of a major change at GM, I can't ever envision a situation where I would even consider purchasing a GM vehicle, period. Their sales suggest that I am not alone. If this prompts it to make such a radical change to their business model that it no longer resembles GM, though -- and they actually begin producing vehicles I might actually want to drive -- who knows. I at least have an open mind about the possibility that at some distant point in the future, I might consider a GM vehicle, which is more than I could have said a few days ago.
Re: China Made GM cars Sold to US in 2 Years
I think Obama is doing the right thing here. I am just looking forward to the Canadian and US gov'ts to get out of the business though.
Re: China Made GM cars Sold to US in 2 Years
damn, I pretty much agree with that crazy fool MM. Except the part about killing the car completely...
But yes, Flint is a sad sad place. It pretty much mirrors what I had been thinking since the downward spiral of GM, convert those factories... I was thinking a smaller, green car.. but the bullet trains, oh hell yea! DO WANT.
Re: China Made GM cars Sold to US in 2 Years
Thats what the old fart was suggesting in zeitgeist... As I said before americans as a whole have forgotten that that the political/economical system is supposed to work for the people not the other way around. What good is the idea of capitalism free for all when its unrealistic and takes such a huge toll in human misery. A hybrid is needed...as both ends of the spectrum are flawed on their own.
Re: China Made GM cars Sold to US in 2 Years
I still can't believe GM filed for bankruptcy and the government took ownership again of a large entity. Whether we mean to or not, we are moving toward a socialism government.
What would you prefer to have happened?
I would have preferred the company to re-organize itself without the government bailouts. We've given GM billions of dollars and they still ended up filing bankruptcy. The government, the management of GM and the labor unions all failed. Throwing money at a bad business is throwing money away.
Re: China Made GM cars Sold to US in 2 Years
It all comes down to an evaluation of profitability...the government must think that by turning the business around they can make it profitable otherwise they would have not bought it. Anyway its cheaper for the US government to buy it once it files for bankruptcy than when its healthy.
In addition it could potentially be argued that the US has a strategic interest for G to survive-both employment/economical as well as technological i.e. they can use the experts that work there for development of new technologies that will make the US a better place for an average citizen.
Re: China Made GM cars Sold to US in 2 Years
My take is this: Let economics work and liquidate the company now. The one thing nobody is discussing in this thread is the attack on the integrity of the law. I think we can expect some pushback from the judiciary, because the executive is taking their power. When a business goes bad, the role of government is “referee” and the judiciary is the responsible branch. It is appalling to see the rule of law so arrogantly discarded by the executive branch (and it started many administrations ago. Obama is only the most frightening manifestation so far). AIG got hell for paying the people who allegedly ruined the company. Now, it’s GM and the UAW gets the biggest share, to which they are not entitled. Unlike the AIG investors (many of whom are pensioners), the President insists that we can’t let the UAW pensioners suffer. BUT: the UAW people sitting back & collecting those pensions are the people who did ruin GM. To my ears the difference in treatment of the two companies has a name and the name is spelled a-r-b-i-t-r-a-r-y- and -c-a-p-r-i-c-i-o-u-s (the very essence of). The bankruptcy system has been prostituted to serve the crooked purposes of an administration more interested in payback to labor unions, than in prudent economic policy. The law of contracts and bankruptcy were not followed here, and unethical (if not illegal) pressure has been placed on senior creditors to accept less than the UAW. This is a sweetheart deal for the union which will cause the loss of many billions more in taxpayer dollars for the benefit of the unions and their members which will pocket the money as the company goes through an extended and rather brutal death over the next few years.

So...I'm not quite following. Where in the US constitution does it say the federal government is to evaluate the profitability of a business and decide to do a leveraged buyout?
If this is what people want from now on, not sure I want to stay here. Problem is, no where else to go.
