Turns out the real unemployment numbers are around 16% by now. In this article it was 15.6% over a month ago. Puts us just 10% away from great dpression numbers where there were only 120,000,000 people in the US compared to over 300,000,000 now.

So great depression there were 30,000,000 people out of work Today there are nearly 50,000,000 people out of work

Re: The REAL Unemployment Numbers are Sickening

fuck this country. i just spent two years abroad and was told by the state of MA that they won't do anything to help me out financially even though i paid my taxes here while i was abroad. meanwhile, i can't find work here, but easily snatched up another job overseas that starts in august. did I mention France gave me some extra cash while I was there because of the shit economy and i'm not even an EU citizen? fuck this country and its economy. i think i'm going to emigrate. MA wants to increase sales tax now too. what a fucking mess

Re: The REAL Unemployment Numbers are Sickening

we are getting our asses kicked as well. 8% They say but that doesn't count BC. BC 50% of people out there grow marijuana and sell it to the US.

*Here's something I don't know, is pot more commonly smoked in Canada than the US?

#1215102Post 14 of 24

Re: The REAL Unemployment Numbers are Sickening

Almost everyone in Canada smokes pot.. I don't know about 50% but I bet it is a really high number grows it and sells it to the US and throughout Canada. BC pot has a reputation in Canada as the best pot in the world.

Re: The REAL Unemployment Numbers are Sickening

it also has that reputation here my friend... 8)

i wonder how serious california is about legalizing bud. i wonder what the bi-state laws would be... that has actually become quite a big discussion lately.... surprisingly.

about the unemployment rate, its not good. i'm still sitting back waiting to see how congress decides to spend the budget which could really affect my job. i hope things get better for everyone soon.

Re: The REAL Unemployment Numbers are Sickening

Does anyone have a update on this link. In my managerial economics class everyone states how are unemployment rate is actually no that bad compared to the great depression. However, I always try to state that people who work an hour week are considered employed and that current employement is highly overstated. I would like to see how they calculate that statistic.

There is the official report. Look at Table A-12 on page 19. The number the media reports is the U-3 number. U-6 is a much more accurate number which includes part-time workers wanting full time jobs, discouraged workers and marginally attached workers.

15.8%

Re: The REAL Unemployment Numbers are Sickening

So what was the method used to determine unemployment in the Great Depression? Were part time workers considered employed?

Here are some links to the BLS website.

I don't think they answer your question specifically. Seems the methods used today were just being developed back then.

Here is a pdf with data back to 1940. Oldest I could find on the site.
