I wake up this morning, and one of the first things that greets me is the the piece of news that John Ashcroft has resigned!!

Um....finally!!

I'm celebrating until his replacement is named, but I can't imagine that it could be any worse than Ashcroft. Fuckin' A-OK with me...

I think this is something most everyone here can agree on. Whether they lean to the right or left, this is a good thing.

Here he is... new Attorney General Alberto Gonzales.

Anyone know why John Ashcroft resigned in the first place? There was plenty of speculation because his time in office had been highly controversial, but this is way outta left field just like the Tenet resignation.

I would assume:

A. it was his choice in the matter. B. cleaning house. C. his was needed only for the first term. D. all of the above.

Agree with all...good riddance.

I've heard rumblings that he may have some health issues. Just rumblings, though, and I can't recall the source, so that could be utter BS.

Anyone know anything about Gonzalez? I'm not that familiar with him. I know that he's been Bush's lap dog for years and that he wrote some sort of memo justifying or endorsing torture in Guantanamo Bay or Iraq (I forget which). Those obviously aren't great traits, but I honestly can't imagine that he could be worse than Ashcroft. At least for the time being, I welcome the change...

While I'd like to think no one could possibly be worse than Ashcroft, this new guy could really give him a run for his money. Listen to this:

"Gonzales then laid out startlingly broad arguments that anticipated any objections to the conduct of U.S. soldiers or CIA interrogators in the future. "As you have said, the war against terrorism is a new kind of war," Gonzales wrote to Bush. "The nature of the new war places a high premium on other factors, such as the ability to quickly obtain information from captured terrorists and their sponsors in order to avoid further atrocities against American civilians." Gonzales concluded in stark terms: "In my judgment, this new paradigm renders obsolete Geneva's strict limitations on questioning of enemy prisoners and renders quaint some of its provisions."
