Because that's exactly what Grampy McCain is saying on the trail today. With that big, yellow-toothed smile on his face. That big-ass, shit eatin' grin.

Paraphrasing, but he said something along the lines of "These attacks on JTP are really attacks on all small businesses".

McCain's been grasping at straws for months now. Just another instance of this.

I don't think Obama has breathed the words "Joe The Plumber" since the debate, literally.

Re: Did I miss Obama's campaign "attacking" JTP??

i firmly believe that anyone who's been following the way obama's campaign has been run will see right through this nonsense.

since the primaries, the obama camp has been going way out of their way not to use the normal dirty tricks, gotcha moments, and all the other wretched tactics we have grown accustomed to in this country. i find it to be quite refreshing, and hope that this is the way we can expect more campaigns to be run in the future.

I though I was the only one that noticed that. You'd think he would get his teeth whitened before running for president.

Re: Did I miss Obama's campaign "attacking" JTP??

@ shosh

your ability to see things through a completely warped vantage point to suit your agenda is truly awe-inspiring. He's mocking the disconnect between McCain using a blue collar worker to push a tax plan that primarily benefits the wealthy, not mocking plumbers. That should be obvious.

By the way, in anticipation of your next argument, best of luck getting this "socialism" thing to stick. One, it's just implausible, and voters know that a vote for Obama is not the same as voting for communism. It's just not.

Second, the Republican party over the last 8 years has overseen the largest expansion of government, and the most socialization of private industry, in modern history. Does anyone in the GOP have the credibility to complain that someone else advocates socialist policies? Don't see that getting a lot of traction in this climate.

Re: Did I miss Obama's campaign "attacking" JTP??

whoa. hold on a second toasty. Implausible you say? It doesn't happen overnight. It takes baby-steps. Obama would likely take several at the very worst. He might not introduce socialism (which is already here in in its mild form), but he certainly ushers in a new era of socialism in america, where it is acceptable and common to agree, and where complex economic situations can be scrubbed down to simple sound bytes as, "see, capitalism doesn't work", despite all evidence to the contrary.

In short, I think Obama may end up using the same approach that Bush has been using....use your feelings and instincts, rather than the cold. hard. facts.

whoa yourself.

I think every intelligent person would agree that on the spectrum of pure socialism vs pure and unrestricted capitalism, Obama's policies -- and the policies of the Democrats generally -- are to the left of those that McCain is advocating (although some of his proposals -- like the one for the government to buy up all the "bad" mortgages, whatever the hell that means -- make me wonder about this at times). That does not mean, however, that a vote for Obama is a vote for ushering in Soviet-era communism.

That's beside the point, though, because I mean it more in terms of a political tactic, regardless of whether it has any basis in fact. What I'm saying is that independent voters do not look at Obama and see Nikita Khrushchev. "Obama supports liberal policies" is a fair attack, but "Obama is a socialist" just flunks the smell test and doesn't stick. I say it's "implausible" in that voters don't see it as a reasonable attack, without any judgment on whether Obama's policies are more or less "socialist" than McCain's.

Simply put, it ain't going to work.

You mean like the baby steps we've been taking towards a military dictatorship and police-state society for the last eight years?

Lol, I swear that wasn't meant to sound totally assholeish. I'm not a prick.

Re: Did I miss Obama's campaign "attacking" JTP??

Um yes. Just like that; they are inherent in each other. A communist country cannot exist without police-state features, no more than it can without a strong, military-industrial complex. Again, they are features of where we are headed.

In short, I think Obama may end up using the same approach that Bush has been using....use your feelings and instincts, rather than the cold. hard. facts.
You know, Obama won't simultaneously hold all three branches of power in the United States government. People can vote for representatives and Senators. They can ultimately vote Obama and other Democrats out if they don't like what they're doing.

No one with any credibility or intelligence is proclaiming at a fundamental level that "capitalism doesn't work." If someone is, name them.

I'm not saying that all of Obama's ideas are great. But all this hysteria that we're going to end up abolishing private property and goose stepping in front of a replica of the Krelim on Pennsylvania Ave. just because we're proposing to deviate to some extent from the largely dismal path we've been on for the last eight years is just ridiculous, imo.

Re: Did I miss Obama's campaign "attacking" JTP??

Gentlemen,

You both write facts into my statements as if I had written them myself: I already point out we're on that road; the fork we were presented with was before us decades ago: this is an ever-long march in the direction towards what we have fought against. Nor is Obama going to take us to the goal line; but I did say he'd take a few steps in that direction; this does not imply that McCain won't either, he'll just end up at a differnt totalitarian doorstep.

The fact is, this all needs to be stopped, and we need to go in reverse direction. And it won't happen under Obama.

And Miro, it doesn't matter that serious economic theorists with 'any credibility' do not support that idea: the average consumer in the United States do not read such periodicals. The watch lou fucking dobbs. Cramer. Ad nauseum. It is the reliance upon those without economic bona fides which our youth and regretably adult population tend to give credence to.

Re: Did I miss Obama's campaign "attacking" JTP??

^^ Gotcha. Libertarian, eh. Well, I certainly confess that we won't be heading there anytime soon. But that aside, I just don't think that we'll be foresaking an economic system that is fundamentally rooted in market competition. And yes, I stand by that statement even in light of the recent bailouts.
