Interesting article pointing out the unexpectedly important role Katie Couric ended up playing in this cycle:
Here is where Katie Couric comes into the picture. Her interviews with Sarah Palin were excellent for one simple reason - follow-ups. She did what, unfortunately, so little journalists do these days - she asked pertinent, revealing (yet polite) follow-up questions. This allowed us to see behind the veneer of Sarah Palin and realize it was backed up by absolutely nothing. Real journalism led to real facts we would not have otherwise seen.

Imagine if Couric had not done those interviews - or had not asked those tough follow-up questions - and all we had seen were Gwen Ifill's standard queries from Thursday night, we might never have known how very little Sarah Palin really knows. And that's relevant. It's important for the voters to understand how much or how little these candidates actually know. They are applying for the most important job in the world.
Re: Thank You Katie Couric

I missed the debate was Couric a moderator for the event, secondly anyone know where I can watch the full debate, thx. Couric is not a bad journalist, she just happens to be in corporate structure of news that is scrambling to deal with the internet as the new source of information.

She was not a moderator, Gwen Ifill of PBS was, and the article was drawing a comparison between Couric actually asking follow-up questions (which led to us all learning that Palin's about a millimeter deep) and Ifill, who did not. Had it not been for Katie Couric, we might not have learned just how unprepared she was -- even though I honestly don't think that was Couric's goal.

Agree 100% with that quote from the article. Palin was exposed for her knowledge and Couric did so without being overly aggressive.

I wasn't too upset with her lack of disagreements with Supreme Court decisions. I was concerned when she didn't name any newspapers or magazines that she reads. She answered just what's put in front of me. I recall Bush said he didn't read the paper either.

what's important to remember is that she wasn't asked a single followup question. she can only handle enough of one question, and even that. this is, again, prima facia unpreparedness. she has nothing more than talking points, none of which she made up herself. this is the biggest political farce in the political sphere in a long time.

elizabeth dole must be angry as hell right now. i wonder what condi rice thinks of her too.

http://www.spectator.org/dsp_article.asp?art_id=13994
Wow...I see the people at the American Spectator have strapped those ultra-conservative blinders on so tight, it's cut off the blood flow to their brains! :) That was the biggest steaming load of shite I've read all week.

These are the same people who rag on Obama for being inexperienced in other articles, then they claim with a straight face that Sarah Palin is just so great; she's so experienced; she's so clever; blah blah fricken blah. And if Palin can't answer basic questions - hey, it's because the interviewer was "condescending"!

I have no particular love for Katie Couric, but to blame her just because Sarah Palin is too dimwitted and inexperienced to give even basic, coherent answers to any question - if the answer's not written down ahead of time for her - is beyond pathetic.

You might try visiting it more often -- it's probably the single best site for obtaining all sides and viewpoints on all matters political, because they literally compile pretty much every political article that comes out each day, on both sides of the spectrum. Seriously. Reading nothing but World Net Daily, Fox News, Human Events & Little Green Footballs will warp your brain over time.

Re: Thank You Katie Couric

i am sorry but that just goes to show you that palin, although a bold pick for vp, is not schooled enough to even think she can compete with american media or our politicians. and this is in no way saying she isn't good enough to be our vp. i think she did a great job last night in the debate given her limited engagement. if you read the threads waaaaay back in the day i suggested mccain should pick her as his vp running mate and i'll stick by it. high risk = high reward or the latter. i can tell she has no clue what is coming for her. she got a great taste of it in that debate. but ffs, with all the media out there portraying the worst image possible, it is no wonder this country is so biased. your media has single-handedly made up the mind for most of the voters out there. whether she be a potential great vp, a potential bad vp or whatever, our media will ensure that you vote one way. and it isn't for her. but thats not to say i care much for fucking mccain and her anyways. wtf... where did our constitution go???

Re: Thank You Katie Couric

The line we got most of here was that Sarah Palin exceeded very low expectations. I just watched three segments and I don't even agree with that! She is a total embarrassment :( I found Joe Biden pretty good actually . He won that by a country mile merely on the fact that he actually debated, she didn't! It was a pleasure to see that he had at least prepared, he had the facts available ! God she looked so stupid and incompetent.

You know what I really, really hate. it that she uses her "feminity" Leaning in " Can I call you Joe"" I nearly chucked !! It's just so awful that a women like this has got this far when there are so many so more worthy!
It was a pleasure to see that he had at least prepared, he had the facts available ! God she looked so stupid and incompetent.
The really scary thing is that she did prepare, she prepared a lot, which is why most everything she said that sounded coherent also sounded highly rehearsed. Had she not prepared, it would have sounded more like those Katie Couric interviews.

In contrast, when Biden spoke, you could tell he was responding based upon his own body of information and knowledge rather than just spitting out the canned talking point that comes closest to answering the question posed. Were she a regular politician (as opposed to someone we thought might be clinically retarded a few days ago), there would be absolutely no question who won this thing...

Re: Thank You Katie Couric

Well, here's something interesting, I guess Palin blames Katie Couric for "annoying her" into her horrifyingly ignorant performance:
"OK, I'll tell you honestly," Palin said, "the Sarah Palin in those interviews is a little bit annoyed because it's like, man, no matter what you say, you're going to get clobbered. If you choose to answer a question, you are going to get clobbered on the answer. If you choose to try and pivot and go on to another subject that you believe that Americans want to hear about, you get clobbered for that, too."
http://blogs.abcnews.com/politicalpunch/2008/10/do-over-palin-a.html

Yeah, good point Sarah, those "trick questions" like "what magazines do you read" are specifically designed to make you look like a fool. If you had answered that, Katie Couric and the nation at large would have unleashed hell on earth upon you.

I love this part, though:
Palin added, "In those Katie Couric interviews I did feel that there were a lot of things that she was missing in terms of an opportunity to ask what a vice presidential candidate stands for -- what the values are represented in our ticket. I wanted to talk about Barack Obama increasing taxes, which would lead to killing jobs, wanted to talk about his proposal to increase government spending by another trillion dollars. Some of his comments that he has made about the war that I think may, in my world, disqualifies someone from consideration as the next commander in chief. ... I wanted to talk about things like that. So, I guess I have to apologize about being a little annoyed, but that is also an indication of being outside that Washington elite, outside of the media elite, also, and just wanted to talk to Americans without the filter and let them know what we stand for."
God this woman is a joke. According to Palin, this is how the interview should have gone:

Couric: Do you have any talking points you'd like to share? Palin: Yes, Barack Obama intends to raise taxes for people making as little as $42K a year Couric: Any other talking points? Palin: I'm glad you asked. Barack Obama's economic policies will destroy American jobs. Couric: Is there anything else you'd like to add? Palin: Yes, thank you. Obama's comments about the war were dangerous and disrespectful to our troops. Couric: Thanks so much, it's been a pleasure having you on. Palin: [winks at camera]

Re: Thank You Katie Couric

It's not just that Sarah Palin is fairly ignorant and unqualified that grates on my nerves so much. It's that she even has the audacity to blithely force herself upon us as a legitimate national leader when her lack of preparedness is really beyond even any debate. She is either disasterously lacking in self awareness or she has no shame in her quest for personal glory.

I work at a company. I'm a senior analyst. If I was suddenly thrust into the top VP spot, I could never perform well in that job with my current experience and capabilities, and I know it. I would feel like a complete and utter sham to be impacting the livelihoods of thousands around me when I knew that I was not the best person for the task.

I do honestly wonder about how self-aware she is about all of this. I realize that there is a large Kabuki theater component to politics, and I wouldn't expect her to come out one day and just say, "OK, I'm in way over my head and I'm going to have to ask you all to just bear with me for a few while I figure out what the hell is going on." No matter how she got here, she's here now, and she has to play the part of someone that knows what they are doing even though everyone knows she's not.

What happens when the cameras turn off, though? Does she get how bad that Katie Couric interview was, and why? Does she realize she's in too deep, or does she really think she's up for this job? I'd love to be a fly on the wall of her campaign bus...

There was a Republican analyst on some news show last night, can't recall which one, who said that Palin was really well-positioned for 2012 in the event McCain didn't get elected this time around. I about spit out my soup. My thought was that she'd be fortunate to ever work in politics again now that the cat is out of the bag on her being a complete moron and all.

He is DEFINITELY more qualified than Palin. Let me repeat: DEFINITELY. He is light years ahead of her in terms of his ability to understand and think critically about complex policy issues; light years ahead of her in terms of in terms of his ability to articulate his thoughts; light years ahead of her in terms of being able to rationally and intelligently defend his point of view. Whether you agree with him or not, it's just not even a valid comparison between the two.

And that's really saying something about Palin, because he's not particularly well qualified to be president right now.

C'mon really ??? Is it so hard to believe that a governor of a state would go on a national talk show, and want to talk policy & politics instead of answering stupid bullshit questions like "what magazines do you read?" What a fuckin' retarded question ( no offense to the few retards here ;) )... Who fuckin' cares what magazines she reads??? If she was really on her game, she could have really fucked them up with... "I mainly get my news from MSNBC, the Huffington Post and the Daily Kos."

Or what about Charlie Gibson's question about the proximity of Alaska to Russia somehow giving her some sort of additional insight into Russian affairs?... My response would have been... literally... "What the fuck kinda question is that? Geographically speaking Charlie, are you retarded?"

Other than maybe during The Colbert Report,The Daily Show or maybe Letterman, has anyone here (honestly) ever seen such ridiculous and insignificant questions asked of any candidate? For any public office ???

I'd be pissed off too, if I studied my ass off on a particular issue; and instead got asked what toilet paper I use to wipe it with... It's fuckin' retarded... I would have gotten up, kicked katie in the balls, and walked off the set...

Do I think she's VP material ??? Probably not... But I don't think any of the other clowns are qualified to run this country either...

I think you're missing the point as to why that response was so unbefuckinglievable. It's not a hard hitting question, it's one of those "getting to know you" sort of softballs that you'd never expect anyone to stumble over. I imagine Couric was thinking, "REALLY, you can't name a single magazine that you read? Wasn't expecting this to trip you up." The substance of the response doesn't even matter, it's a fluffer-type question to give her an opportunity to introduce herself to the American people. No way did anyone at CBS anticipate that being a "gotcha" type of question.
Or what about Charlie Gibson's question about the proximity of Alaska to Russia somehow giving her some sort of additional insight into Russian affairs?... I guess you're not aware that the GOP talking point in advance of the interview was that her proximity to Russia was an example of her foreign policy credentials? Gibson was not the first person to advance that asinine suggestion, it was the McCain campaign -- he was just asking her to elaborate on it, probably because it's an absurd claim (as you seem to recognize).

I would have given a stupid response myself, while (in the back of my mind) thinking of all the ridiculous "assumptions" that people & the media might make after I answered... New to the game of national politics and afraid of media bias (after her family just got sloshed all over the gossip rags)... Well then, clearly you're not ready to be vice president, either.

There are few things funnier than normally intelligent people falling over themselves with self-deprecation to make excuses for Palin's obvious inadequacies.

C'mon, if someone were to ask you a question like that, you could come up with a response. You know you could. It's OK. We all know that. Maybe she wasn't expecting the question, but national problems aren't necessarily going to present themselves in an orderly, predictable way, either. Watching her crash and burn over something this benign scares the hell out of me when I think about her reaction to a legitimately thorny issue.
