mccain saying he wants to suspend his campaign and get back to washingotn and also to re-shedule the debate..

frankly im all for it.

anyone have thoguhts on this, even it means pushing the election back a few weeks. (just as long as bush still has to hand over power on the normal date please.)

Re: should they suspend the campaigning?

McCain doesn't know shit about the economy, yet he wants to go back and work on it?

Nicely timed for him, since he's been getting clobbered in the polls the last two weeks.

But what can you (obama) really say at this point? Say no, and you're attacking his leadership because when the country is in crisis he wants to be in the trenches (regardless of wether not he can do anything or understands anything about it) Say yes, and McCain has led the charge and you're following his lead. I think it's strictly a political move, and a nice one at that.

Fine, postpone the debate, but the election should not get postponed. Nov 4th its on.

Really, what are Obama and McCain going to do to help besides try to play up their leadership and speak loudly using big words and try to move election chess pieces? It's all nonsense if you ask me.

Re: should they suspend the campaigning?

dont know myself....

this, in no way, is going to fix the problems with our financial markets. there is no one easy fix, they just keep delaying the bigger problem imo.

but, on the other hand, congress and etc, should take a bigger and more in depth look into this proposed bailout and make sure that it has good intentions.

last time we had bush ordering people to pass a bill overnight was the patriot act, and look how bright of a gem that turned out to be =\

this isn't about governing, this is about politics. so was his picking of Palin. He could care less how things turn out so long as he gets elected.

Re: should they suspend the campaigning?
A McCain senior adviser said that Obama called McCain early Wednesday morning to asking a joint statement of "shared principles and conditions" for the bailout proposal.

An Obama campaign source confirmed the call and said that McCain returned his call six hours later, and accepted the concept and suggested the two of them return to Washington to join the negotiations.
such a transparent political move. and the campaigns won't stop, even if they say they will. give me a break.

Re: should they suspend the campaigning?

obvious political maneuver. and when you look at this is flies in the face of any cease-fire agreements between the campaigns:
Although Mr. McCain was the first to emerge on Wednesday afternoon and announce a change in campaign plans, Mr. Obama apparently began the exchange with his Republican rival hours earlier.

“At 8:30 this morning, Senator Obama called Senator McCain to ask him if he would join in issuing a joint statement outlining their shared principles and conditions for the Treasury proposal and urging Congress and the White House to act in a bipartisan manner to pass such a proposal,” said Bill Burton, the spokesman for the Obama campaign.
Re: should they suspend the campaigning?

being that McCain is the least present member of the senate for votes, and that he believes the fundamentals of the economy are fine, and that he's taken a private discussion public for his own potential benefit, and that suggesting bringing the campaigns to capital hill won't politicize anything....

....one has to wonder: has this guy lost it completely?

Re: should they suspend the campaigning?

^^^

which is why i discounted him at 10% of the vote, yet, american stupidity threw him back in...... god i pray barr pulls a rabbit out of a hat in this vote. i honestly cannot fathom how he is even reotely in this race. i mean, obama should have like 80% by now. and he is a story teller on teh lines of tolkein. we really need to disallow voting for everyone except people with collegiate degrees in a science, history or mathematics feild....

The guy that said, "The fundamentals of the economy are strong" just last monday, wants to go to Washington to work on the struggling economy. Can't make this kind of shit up. LOL.

he obviously talks out of his ass without knowing 2-shits of the truth about what is going on.... sounds a lot like a Bush to me =\

Re: should they suspend the campaigning?

I think it's a political move by McCain. I would agree with McCain if he was on the committee deciding to vote on this. However, I think he's trying to look presidential and then he can campaign that he fixed Wall St.

#1087058Post 18 of 44

Re: should they suspend the campaigning?

I think he's also ill prepared to debate a harvard law grad about the economy at a time when the economy is issue #1 on people's minds, and is probably going to be issue #1 in the debates, and he is on record as saying economics isn't his strong point, AND he just a week ago said the fundamentals of our economy are strong, right before we ended up knee deep in this weak ass stressed economy bullshit. Nice move Johnny boy, maybe you can tell everyone TERROR you're a POW and we'll forget you're a fucking retard when it comes to the economy.

Re: should they suspend the campaigning?
McCain is toast.
This is an insult to people with "toast" in their name. I cringed when I read this.

In related news, McCain now wants to postpone the VP debate, too:

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/09/24/mccain-camp-wants-to-post_n_129079.html

McCain will look like an enormous schmuck if he goes forward with the debate on Friday, so he's probably going to have to stick to his guns and not show if they don't get a bill worked out tomorrow. Obama can't very well debate himself (although McCain probably could), so it looks like nothing will happen on Friday.

This was actually supposed to be the foreign policy focused debate, so if this thing doesn't get rescheduled, McCain's stuck talking about the economy from here on out. Advantage Obama as of right now, I'd say.

Re: should they suspend the campaigning?
Advantage Obama as of right now, I'd say.
I thought that McCain had a decent shot at this election up until now. With the latest economic developments, I think McCain and the Republicans are thoroughly fucked and are now comfortably destined to lose.

Re: should they suspend the campaigning?

BTW, if this poll is to be believed, this "let's suspend our campaigns and postpone the debates" thing is a loser for McCain:

McCain should send in Palin as a backup, to debate Barack on Friday night; since her experience, knowledge, and credentials are most similar to Barack's...

Re: should they suspend the campaigning?
[Palin's] experience, knowledge, and credentials are most similar to Barack's...
I think if we stipulate this for the sake of argument it contrasts them even further. If we accept as fact that they have quantitatively the same experience (which as complete bullshit, but let's just concede it for the sake of argument), it makes the obvious rift in intellectual capability and rationality that much more strident.

Re: should they suspend the campaigning?

It would be interesting to have Obama debate Palin, except for the fact that McCain's team has been hiding her from public questioning since the day she was asked. There is no reason they would let her loose for a debate. They're treating her like she's a muslim wife of a fundamentalist islamic cleric.

It is every curious. She is like a stage prop to be used only when convenient. She is sort of like a Politburo member who spews propaganda on cue and you still have no idea what she really thinks. I don't think Sarah Palin is stupid, just ignorant of most of the pressing issues facing us. If & when she demonstrates some critical thinking and/or judgment on her own based in reality and not ideology, there may come a time when I am able to respect her position, even if I don't agree with it. Surely, the Charlie Gibson interview, and this more recent Katie Couric interview did little to change my view of her.

Re: should they suspend the campaigning?

I fear for the US over the next couple of days. The Bush administration has to do something to help McCain out or he is going to lose the election. Also McCain doesn't want to have a debate against Obama because he will obviously lose. I'm holding by breath over the next couple weeks.

Re: should they suspend the campaigning?

Heard a thought on the radio this morning, not sure I agree, but wanted to throw it out there. What if McCain is suggesting postponing the debate because he simply doesn't want the debate to go forward right now?

It's not that he's afraid of debating Obama in the abstract -- it's that he's afraid no one will listen. This debate is supposed to be focused upon foreign policy, which is supposed to be McCain's strong suit, and where he's really going to shine. The problem is, people don't really care about foreign policy right now, they care about the economy, and McCain is concerned that his shining moment is going to come at a time that no one gives a rip what he has to say about foreign policy. Hence, his offer to postpone the debates until the economic situation has been addressed allows him to have the FP debate when people might actually listen.

Not sure I buy this, but I thought it was an interesting theory that makes some sense.

Thoughts?

Re: should they suspend the campaigning?

that was what I was getting at in my post. McCain doesn't want to talk economy he wants to talk about terrorism. Terrorism must happen for McCain to want to talk.

Perhaps true, but I think it was more of a side-benefit of his strategy to come out as willing to put aside politics in order to help with the crisis.

But yes, delaying the debates will help both Palin and McCain. If the debate goes forward as planned, McCain will be debating when he expressed unwillingness to do so, he will be more apt to be shorter-tempered and distracted, because it's something he thought might not happen. On top of this, the point above: the debate will inevitably be muddied by the crisis, and national security and foreign policy discussion will revolve around our position in global financial markets and extra-national resources like oil. Not that it shouldn't, but of course McCain won't like it going there.

He wants to come down hard on terrorism (as if Obama doesn't) but no one's worried about terrorism when there is a depression looming. Kind of tough to scare people with the boogeyman when their money's on fire.

#1090096Post 38 of 44

Re: should they suspend the campaigning?

This is surely a sneaky move by McCain. Most intelligent people should be able to see this. How big of a difference will this make for them to be present, not a whole lot I think. I'm indifferent about if they should suspend the campaigning, McCain looks weak either way.

#1090099Post 39 of 44

Re: should they suspend the campaigning?

everyone knows mccain will own obama in any debate, WITHOUT PROMPTERS, as obama cant talk shit without something written in front of him; thats why he asked for 4 (four) prompters for this debate. so mccain didnt cancel this because he thought he would lose the debate.
