as long as people get enjoyment out of things like "Jib Jab", candidates will never have the freedom to have a rational political discourse. people latch onto small events, quotes. their minds distort them, they become facts. the media justifies the position they hold in peoples' minds by repetition. and only a small minority think for themselves, look deeper, try to find the truth.
the existence of 24 hour news media as a profitable enterprise is probably the worst thing for proper political discourse in US history. get ris of that, then we might be getting somewhere.
