McCain today (July 14)
“I was concerned about a couple of steps that the Russian government took in the last several days. One was reducing the energy supplies to Czechoslovakia. Apparently that is in reaction to the Czech's agreement with us concerning missile defense, and again some of the Russian now announcement they are now retargeting new targets, something they abandoned at the end of the Cold War, is also a concern. So we see the tensions between Russia and their neighbors, as well as Russia and the United States are somewhat increasing. We need to try to do everything we can to lessen those tensions including the tensions between Russia and the country of Georgia.” …

Re: Energy Crisis in Czechoslovakia

happened again
For the second time in two days, John McCain has referred to current events in “Czechoslovakia” – a country that officially ceased to exist in January of 1993.

“And I regret some of the recent behavior Russia that has exhibited, and I’ll be glad to talk about that later on including reduction in oil supplies to Czechoslovakia after they agreed with us on a missile defense system, etcetera,” said the presumptive Republican nominee at a New Mexico town hall Tuesday.
Re: Energy Crisis in Czechoslovakia

For a country that haven't been around since the early 90's, Czechoslovakia sure is getting a lot of press lately. Democratic VP Short-Lister and purported foreign policy guru Sam Nunn just made the same mistake:
“…We in this country are about to, under this government, under the Bush administration, deploy [a] missile defense system in Poland and Czechoslovakia,” Nunn said at the Indiana event Wednesday.
http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/2008/07/16/czechoslovakia-gets-star-treatment-for-third-day-in-a-row/

This certainly isn't going to help Nunn's chances for the VP slot, and it decreases the significance of McCain's inability to remember the name of the Czech Republic in the same way that Phil Gramm's comment about the US being a "nation of whiners" blunts McCain's ability to attack Obama with the "bitter" comment. Way to go, Sam.

Re: Energy Crisis in Czechoslovakia

maybe we are taking the iranian and gaza point of view and simply denying thier existence????? but then again, that would mean we play by thier rules.
