Heard about this, the cover for the next edition of the New Yorker?

I've been a little surprised by the Obama campaign's reaction to this drawing. It's satire, and it actually helps highlight how ridiculous some of the whisper campaigns are. Maybe he's concerned that repeating the myths keeps them alive. As I think about it, maybe he's quietly concerned that, as satire (which requires a bit more to fully appreciate than more in-your-face humor, particularly when written), there will be a chunk of the population that won't get the joke? Or maybe he's just concerned that the image will be used against him in some other context where it's not obviously satire.

I dunno. I thought it was appropriately ridiculous, but Team Obama obviously disagrees...

What BHO should have said was this: "yeah, i guess there are some people who really think i'm a muslim. I guess it would take me going to a christian church for most of my life, getting married in the christian church, ad infinitum to change thier minds..."

i am kinda with his camp here.

it is just not needed. not by his camp, mccain's camp, educated public in general

half this country get distinguish between a B and an S anyway and think he is some isalmist manchurian candidate who somehow will implement sharia on feb 1. literally. so many idiots out there calling him a terrorist and swearing that he will destroy us and lead to massive wars within and beyond our borders.

the lead in tomorrow's USA today should be along the lines of ....

WE FOUND BARAK'S PROTESTANT CHRISTIAN BAPTISM VIDEO TAPE DETAILS TO FOLLOW

..... if only to emphasize he is not a wahabbi follower.i have my issues with him and john, and really dont want either of them near 1600, but i will go to bat for him on this one. we just dont need it, particularly to the overwhelming majority of the uneducated american public who think that iraq is the birthplace of allah and that austria is the capital of australia.

I'm not an Obama supporter(or McCain), but that cartoon crosses over the line of satire.

New Yorker should pull or retract the cover as it is not only religiously insensitive, but racially insensitive. Michelle Obama's hair reminds me of a Black Panther with the machine gun. Nice fist bump too. Even more stereotypes.

And I see a flag in the fire. Nice job New Yorker!

I'm no Obama supporter, but I can understand their outrage.

It doesn't matter if the picture is satirical. The truth is, no one reads the New Yorker. 99.9% of people who see the cover will never open the magazine. They will simply see the cover as they walk past the newsstand. Without reading the article the average passer-by won't know it is satire, and just assume the various rumors about Obama being a muslim are true.

From that perspective, I agree with their criticism of the New Yorker publication.

Believe it or not, I'm going to continue to defend this cartoon. It pretty much wraps all of the ridiculous rumors and speculation about Obama and his wife into one absurd cartoon:

-That Obama is secretly a Muslim -The "terrorist fist jab" -That Obama sympathizes with terrorists (the OBL picture over the fireplace) -That Obama is unpatriotic (the flag burning) -That they are secretly radical, militant racists

Context matters, and in the context of the New Yorker, I'm OK with it. If this were on the cover of the Weekly Standard, I'd probably be pissed. Hopefully, this will help shine a light on some of the asinine whisper campaigns and get them out in the open where they can be properly debunked rather than continuing to circulate via email.

Maybe it does go too far, I don't know. For satire to work, though, it has to be over the top. I guess if you have to explain the joke, it didn't work. The biggest problem is probably that 99.9% of the people that see that cover will never actually read the article, and there's going to be a large number of people that don't get the satire part of it. On the other hand, if they see that and think, "Yep, pretty much the way I see it," they probably weren't going to vote for Obama anyway.

Then again, maybe I've giving Joe 6-Pack too much credit.

Another "nice" one. I wonder if the same guy drew those cartoons. Have they drawn anything anti-Muslim though? Islamic community doesn't seem down with this type of satire.
