Michelle Obama’s Early Militant Racism Revealed

i bet this wont make the news

For months during the nominating process, Michelle Obama’s graduating thesis has been under lock and key at Princeton University. The university stated suspiciously that it would be available to the public after the general election. Nobody knew why until now.

The sequestering of an academic thesis was unprecedented at Princeton, a liberal university that prides itself on open access to scholarly information. Despite repeated attempts by media organizations to view the document, Obama’s alma mater would provide no explanation for hiding it. The thesis written under her maiden name, Michelle LaVaughn, is titled “Princeton-Educated Blacks and the Black Community.” You can download it here. Politico.com received a possibly redacted copy from the Obama campaign recently. The excerpts show that Obama identifies with black militancy, utterly obsessed with race in America and her own blackness. It is a fundamentally racist document, shocking when considering that this scholarship is the product of a presidential candidate’s wife at a great university.

She mourns that she will face “further integration and/or assimilation into a white cultural and social structure that will only allow me to remain on the periphery of society; never becoming a full participant.” Obama’s thesis is full of paranoid claims and overtly racist feelings. She cannot accept the idea of a diverse student body working together in a melting pot. Others worry about her black militancy here.
“I have found that at Princeton, no matter how liberal and open-minded some of my white professors and classmates try to be toward me, I sometimes feel like a visitor on campus; as if I really don’t belong. Regardless of the circumstances under which I interact with whites at Princeton, it often seems as if, to them, I will always be black first and a student second.” Not only does she see separate black and white societies in America, but she elevates black over white in her world.
“There was no doubt in my mind that as a member of the black community, I was somehow obligated to this community and would utilize all of my present and future resources to benefit this community first and foremost. “ What is Michelle Obama planning to do with her future resources that will elevate black over white in America? Most alarming is her use of the terms “separationist” and “integrationist” when describing the views of black people. She clearly identifies herself with a “separationist” view of race. “By actually working with the Black lower class or within their communities as a result of their ideologies, a separationist may better understand the desperation of their situation and feel more hopeless about a resolution as opposed to an integrationist who is ignorant to their plight.” Here is another typical passage that is uncomfortable for its poor writing, but nevertheless ominous in meaning: “Attending Princeton has probably forced [black alumni] to compete intellectually with Whites more than with Blacks and, thus, they have probably become more familiar with Whites intellectually, but in other activities they are likely to have gained familiarity with Whites if they did not spend time with Whites in other activities besides intellectual ones. “ Is it no wonder that most black alumni ignored her racist questionnaire? Only 89 responded out of 400 who were asked for input. The following passage appears to be a call to arms for affirmative action policies that could be the hallmark of an Obama administration. “Predominately white universities like Princeton are socially and academically designed to cater to the needs of the white students comprising the bulk of their enrollments.” The conclusion of the thesis is alarming. Michelle Obama’s poll of black alumni helps her understand that other black students at Princeton do not share her obsession with blackness. She laments that only 1/3 say they are more comfortable around black people than white people. But rather than celebrate, she is horrified that black alumni identify with our common American culture more than they value the color of their skin. “I hoped that these findings would help me conclude that despite the high degree of identification with whites as a result of the educational and occupational path that black Princeton alumni follow, the alumni would still maintain a certain level of identification with the black community. However, these findings do not support this possibility.” Michelle Obama does not look into a crowd and see Americans. She sees black people and white people eternally conflicted with one another. That is a very divisive view for a potential first lady that would do untold damage to race relations in this country in a Barack Obama administration. Michelle Obama’s intellectually refined racism should give all Americans pause for deep concern.

I remember the RNM trying to make hay with this months ago, and nothing ever came of it. Probably because there's nothing there. Something makes me think this article might be a tad skewed in its presentation.
i bet this wont make the news
Actually, it already did. The article quotes Politico's story of 2/22/08.
go read her thesis.
It's like 65 pages long, and I have shit to do. I'm not really inclined to read a 23-year old thesis until a credible source gives me a reason to -- and so far, in the 3 months since this first hit the media, the only people I've heard that are up in arms about it at all are wingnuts, which suggests to me that there's not a lot here.

I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that you probably haven't actually read the thesis, either, by the way, just the article criticizing it. Am I right?

As an aside, thanks for spending more time in the politics forum lately. Bush fucked it up so badly, there's been very little dissent on anything in a while.

i havent read it yet but i am planning to tonight. just printed it. yeah you pretty much got it right about bush. my personal opinion on him is that he actually means good and he is probably a good guy, although not the brightest of the bunch. the problem with his administration is that he has surrounded himself with very evil people imo. im not here much because usually i have so much to write that i get too lazy typing so much. much easier just posting stupid copypasta shit. but i am getting worried about these elections with obama, hillary, and mccain as our only options.
but i am getting worried about these elections with obama, hillary, and mccain as our only options.
i said that last time when it was john kerry or bush. now, its actually WORSE.

i will say it now. none of the candidates are viable or will even be a decent president.

they should hand the budget and economy to the AICPA the courts should be run by the supreme courts tort and other legal reform should be put on hold or sent to popular vote let the generals finish iraq and afghan campaigns thier way, not congress or geneva convention ways. and for fucks sake, let the scientists figure out power, enviornment and whatever they can as scientists usually are the only ones in the room that are correct.

I'm not going to defend Michelle Obama as not having any racist opinions; I don't really know her well enough. But I will say this:

#1. Citing a real cultural divide between blacks and whites and investigating is NOT necessarily racist.

#2. Being black and feeling like an outsider in a predominantly white university is NOT necessarily racist.

#3. Wanting to retain a cultural identity as a black person is NOT necessarily racist.

They all could be part of a racist thought process. But you could also argue that acknowledging the cultural divide is an important step to collectively addressing it in a productive way, that feeling like an outsider could be the product of racism experienced, and that cherising a cultural identity does not have to coincide with a belief of superiority over other cultures.

My point is that are many ways to spin this, based on that thesis alone. You should question why the writers of that accusatory piece chose to spin it the way they did.

^^ People very close and influential with respect to a presidential candidate are always fair game. Who you hang out with says something important about you.

Re: Michelle Obama’s Early Militant Racism Revealed

are we to expect a black candidate to be indifferent to the very RECENT racist laws this country held during the time with which they were growing up? You've gotta be kidding me....

By around 2024, i would expect a clean slate.....

Re: Michelle Obama’s Early Militant Racism Revealed

I don't really mind her feeling like out of place on campus. I am your average white guy and felt way out of place on a college campus. But as I grew and I matured I discovered that everyone felt out of place and it was my place in the world that I had to make. I discovered this my Sophomore year and then i grew into my own. What scares me is that Mrs. Obama never grew beyond this awkward stage. Being black makes you different, being intelligent makes your different. Hell, being just like everyone else makes you different. No one is normal, normal is a idea not a lifestyle. The deep seeded distrust of White America deeply concerns me. The black population is only 13% of the entire nation. Her husband could be presiding over a huge country but only represent a small minority of this country. Those views define how he will define laws. The majority will be sacrificed for the minority. That doesn't work for me, that isn't a democracy. That being said, Mrs. Mcain won't release her Tax statement from last year... What is she hiding? The current state of affairs are flawed, we need a real revolution not the Obama "televised revolution". That is why I am for Ron Paul. Full disclosure and less government. Ron Paul 2008.

Re: Michelle Obama’s Early Militant Racism Revealed

^ did you miss the memo on ron paul for president?? :D j/k i know what you're gettin at.

ANYWHO..... if she married a half white dude, she can't be all that racist. sorry. yeah she may fend for her race and be able to associate with her race more, but if you marry a 50% white man, you can't be that big of a biggot.

My first thought would be, looking from her point of view that Princeton is not the same college experience for blacks as it would be, let's say Grambling, at the time it was written which was probably in the early eighties, racism was still very much on the surface, so why not write a thesis paper somewhat loosely related her experience, I imagine at Princeton Either way, she is not Angela Davis, even though the fro would get some major props and if she is then not doubt Farrakkan will be made Secretary of State, so the cleansing of whitey along with every other non muslim can begin. Now who wants a bean pie?
