go huckabee!

Re: Romney Drops Out

Just watched most of the speech and he did drop out and sounds like he's backing McCain which seems like the obvious choice.

Conservatives feel like they don't have a candidate now. Even Ann Coulter said she would back Hillary if McCain is the nominee.

#969578Post 4 of 31

Re: Romney Drops Out

well, this could make things interesting. McCain is the clear frontrunner, but I'm not convinced that his lead is so insurmountable that a coalescing of support behind Huckabee couldn't unseat him. McCain's not running away from the pack, he's walking.

Two of the next three primaries, Louisiana and Kansas (where they refused to teach evolution until recently), would seem to favor a guy like Huckabee. Who knows what might happen?

Who am I kidding, though. Probably just wishful thinking on my part. :)

im for ron paul too... just sucks he didnt get any exposure and he got shoved to the side during this whole thing. he never stood a chance

Re: Romney Drops Out

this is a huge opportunity to get the exposure RP has been denied by the MSM: run Independent

Consider the backing Jaded conservatives who want the choice to be conservative without having to bite thier tongues for the 3rd election in a row.

Libertarians, who i believe have already given him the thumbs up

the constitutionalist party (which doesn't really matter, but still counts)

Democrats jaded by false promises of getting out of iraq (this only counts if Hilary gets the nomination).

He'll probably bag the independents as well consdiering such status-quo images presented by mccain and hilary.

Why Paul hasn't gained the evangelical vote I'll never know. Probably because he doesn't wear his church on his sleeve, or use it to force policy on others.

Looking forward to this coming week!

Re: Romney Drops Out

^^I actually like Ron Paul from a policy standpoint, I really do, and I agree that the MSM and Fox marginalized him to the point that it was virtually impossible for him to wage a serious campaign. Plus, he looks like a character from a fantasy book, maybe a wizard or something, so he's got that going for him.

Here's the thing, though. The racist ranting thing is a deal-killer, and if he had been allowed to establish himself as a legitimate candidate and ever got any traction, things like that would get more attention than they do now. He's been doing his thing basically unchallenged because he hasn't been enough of a threat to warrant any competing candidate's time and money. He's got some other views that many would consider out of the mainstream, and you better believe that his opponents would be hopping up and down about that shit if it mattered. He'd get creamed...

Re: Romney Drops Out

have you actually read the quotes in context? and the fact that he didn't write them. And the fact that it's old news from the early 90's. And the fact that he's got the support of the NAACP president. And well..look what Obama's personal pastor has said about the jews. Oh wait.... can't bring that up.

If people are going to bring up such an insignificant claim, when the future of this country is at stake, I would recommend that you reconsider what is more important for the country....

His thoughts on evolution are enough for me not to want him leading the country.
have you actually read the quotes in context? and the fact that he didn't write them. And the fact that it's old news from the early 90's.
Actually, yeah, I have read them in context, was aware that he didn't write some of them, and am aware that it's been around for a while. With that being the case:

 1. Some of that, even in context, is still pretty troubling.
 2. This stuff went out in a newsletter called "The Ron Paul Political Report," and it wasn't an isolated incident. Even if you take Paul at his word that he didn't know these statements were in there, allowing stuff like that to go out under your name makes it seem like he was asleep at the wheel. Either way, it's the sort of thing that an opposing campaign would have a field day with because there's no way to spin it that puts him in a positive light.

Just look at it from a horse race standpoint, which is how I intended my post -- you have to agree that if he were to receive serious scrutiny, he would have to deal with it and it would not play well. Look at how the press grabbed onto the Clinton-Obama squabble to create a race-based dialogue that I thought was frankly overblown. The same press that saw to it that Paul got no exposure is the same press that loves to cling to salacious stuff like this.
If people are going to bring up such an insignificant claim, when the future of this country is at stake, I would recommend that you reconsider what is more important for the country....
Is this directed at me? Like I said, I like much of what Paul has to say, but if I'm being realistic, he has no chance for a host of reasons, most of which have nothing to do with him being marginalized by the press.

Re: Romney Drops Out
kucinich's views on evolution?
^No, ron fucking paul.

i'd spell it out myself, but i can't put it any better than this, as someone said on another board i argue politics on:
It must be strange to have a strong economic understanding based on mathematical law but refute the existence of evolution science but hold dear the mathematic models that prove evolution theory and are borrowed by economics, for example evolutionary game theory.

Live in one world deny the other, makes you a hypocrite. The shit has been hitting Paul hard since he emerged as a candidate.
I'd' probably vote for Nader before i voted for Paul. And neither one of them has a shot in hell of ever being president.

Let's focus our energy on talking about people who might actually be president of this country one day.

#969617Post 18 of 31

Re: Romney Drops Out

As a person who believes in evolution, I actually don't believe in paul's view on the creation of the earth. why? because i know he's not going to take that belief and start making policy around it. He has time and time again shown this to be true. Huckabee is quite the opposite....he's the person you need to be scared of.

Toasty -i think the reason why ron paul doesn't have a chance is because most people haven't given him one. There are probably a few million who think the same way. "I like ron paul, but he doesn't have a chance". But, let's face it, the only reason why he doesn't have a chance is because the media has ignored him outright (didn't fox news today say there were only two republicans in the race right now?)

I was at the gym this afternoon reading the text on the screen from McCain's speech at CPAC> what a 180 that guy pulled.

If conservatives are going to believe that, then they need to fess up: Michael Moore is probably just as believable.

Gotta admit, i was pumping iron twice as hard and twice as heavy today as i watched on.

Well, maybe you're right. maybe we should just do nothing. because there is no chance.

Come november i'm selling my tv. things are going to get worse.

i know he's not going to make policy around this evolution beliefs, but to me it's a major character flaw. He's living in his dream world. It doesn't matter, because MC Hammer as as much of a chance at being president at Paul does. So, whatever.

And yeah, Huckabee scares the living shit out of me, just like the rest of the republicans do

#969627Post 20 of 31

Re: Romney Drops Out

how is that a character flaw though? I mean, if it was a character issue, then it would go to the fact that he does not make policy based on his own beliefs but rather to maximize the liberties of others to live as they choose.

Perhaps i'm a bit different: i've got more respect for people who keep thier churches out of political offices than others.

#969629Post 21 of 31

Re: Romney Drops Out

It's like this:

Would you want someone who believes the earth is flat to be your leader?

"Hey, he's not going to use his beliefs that the earth is flat to make policy"

Yeah, but he thinks it's fucking flat, and it ISN'T. stretch of an analogy, but it is what it is.

Paul has some brilliant ideas, as already mentioned here and in other threads, but he's a bit off his rocker on some things- and coming off an 8 year run of guy who is REALLY fucking off his rocker, i'm just sayin...no thanks.

I'm actually saying something different. Basically, my point is that even though he's never been able to gain any traction because the media hasn't given him a chance and have taken steps to marginalize him, if that were not the case he'd still be getting creamed because he's got too many skeletons in his closet to make it gracefully through the sort of scrutiny given to presidential candidates.

Put another way, people who take a closer look at Ron Paul like him very much. When people take a much closer look at Ron Paul, though, a lot of the luster tends to wear off. My opinion.

Remember when he was on Colbert Report, the crowd was really with him for like 90% of his interview. Towards the end, Colbert began asking if he'd like to abolish certain government agencies, and you could sense the, "Yeah, I don't know about that" vibe in the crowd.

He wants to abolish: Medicare Department of Education Department of Energy Department of Homeland Security IRS FEMA UN NATO The Interstate Commerce Commission NAFTA WTO etc

I mean, I'm a big proponent of small government, but come on. Bounds of reason. Even if you agree with this, you've got to recognize that most people don't share his views here. That's a problem in a general election.

#969650Post 23 of 31

Re: Romney Drops Out

Right, but he said let's abolish the federal agencies, and leave those agencies to the states themselves. that's been his point all along. let's return the federal government to a more efficient, responsible, and legitimate size. I can only wonder how large the government will be expanded in the next 8 years. Sadly, there will never be another candidate that will run on the platform of reducing the scope of the federal government. A legitimate candidate that is.

I think other candidates have WAY more skeletons in thier closets than Paul. By a huge stretch, too. Seriously. It's never stopped anyone from being in the office before, has it?

Hell, John McCain's second wife is more corrupt than Paul ffs.

All I'm saying is this: there is a chance, but a slim chance at that, where the citizens of this country can vote for thier own personal and financial freedom. But clearly the populace has voted for thier own imprisonment. (I'm sure someone has said this in a more eloquent fashion before).

RIP has taken a new meaning: Republic in Pieces.

over and out

Re: Romney Drops Out

i'm not a fairweather fan of constitutional liberties and economic responsibility, so no. sorry, i can't do it.

After reading a great amount of opinions on what happened yesterday, I think what ticks me off the most is how one day, one person says mccain is the worst choice, and then the next, that we should reconsider his ability to be a 'conservative president'.

#969818Post 29 of 31

Re: Romney Drops Out

There aren't anymore 'republicans.' I really don't see how anyone can vote for what's left of that party.

If there's one thing that todays "Republicans" (using that term in its loosest possible sense) do well, it's band together, circle the wagons, and speak with a common voice regardless of whether they all hold that view or not. Part of the reason they are so successful politically is that they seem to view solidarity as trumping everything else. It's why the the Dems have had their asses handed to them since taking over Congress.

The GOP walks in lock-step with one another to ensure that the Dems can't claim victory on anything. Remember when the GOP controlled the Senate, "filibuster" was a dirty word used to demonize attempts by the Dems to block legislation? Now, the message coming out of the GOP is, "everyone knows that you need 60 votes to do anything in the Senate." They've filibustered bill after bill after bill -- hell it just happened yesterday with the stimulus package (before they cut that deal) -- but when is the last time you heard the word "filibuster?"

The GOP bands together and sends out a unified message, which the press then regurgitates. Maybe that's what's going on with McCain -- perhaps if they say it enough, they'll start to believe it themselves... ;)
