WAR against IRAN

On August 30, an Air Force B-52 strategic bomber took off from Minot Air Force Base in North Dakota and flew to Barksdale Air Force Base, Louisiana. What made this story newsworthy is that the B-52 in question was armed with live nuclear weapons making the nuclear-armed flight something that hasn't happened since nuclear-armed planes were grounded in the U.S. in 1968.

The Air Force claims there was an error involved in the transfer of munitions. I don't buy this. You don't have multiple safeguards 'broken' in one afternoon. Statistically, I suppose it was bound to happen?

Second, when has the military ever been this forward about a mistake...on domestic territory no less? Perhaps this was intentionally leaked to put Iran on 'notice'. I honestly believe this is the case. This may be a bit of a stretch, but Barksdale is a jump-off point to the Middle East....

Has anyone else read about this?

More worrisome is other seemingly unrelated events that have taken place over the past few days. Putin dissolving the gov't, and just a day earlier, testing the worlds largest non-nuclear weapon, discovery of a possible nuclear site in Syria while in the previous days Israel was flying fighters over that area, Patraeus discussing a 'proxy war' with Iran, while the diplomatic attempts with Iran have failed (China, now with Russia, blocking diplomatic containment of Iran).

I'd be interested in hearing your input and speculation on this data.

(why does it seem like we're living in a Tom Clancy novel all of a sudden?)

Re: WAR against IRAN

I hadn't thought of that, but that's a pretty interesting point.

I think we're far closer to war with Iran than anyone really realizes. The same drumbeat that preceded our trip into Iraq is there: Iran has/is trying to get nukes, Iran funds terrorists, etc., etc. If Congress authorizes that, everyone that votes yes ought to be required to fight the war personally.

Re: WAR against IRAN

I don't see us near war with Iran. Things have went so badly in Iraq that it would require Iran doing something significant for us to get in another war.

Re: WAR against IRAN

toasty: are you asserting that request under the guise that an attack or war on Iran would be unjustified? Would it not be true that a war on Iran be more legitimate than a war in Iraq? Even the Democratic frontrunners have asserted that if it came to it, they would support such an act.

superdave: so you're saying it's not impossible? I'm curious about what it would take to convince the American public to declare war on Iran (assuming the populace isn't already primed for that response already). Patreus has said we are in a 'proxy war' of sorts. Isn't there just a thin legal line between proxy war and real war?

A war against Iran would definitely be more legitimate than the war against Iraq was. If you were to go back and read everything I've written in the Politics forum since the Iraq war began, which I incidentally do not recommend ;) , you'll note that my biggest problems with Iraq have been: (1) going in there when there were more pressing threats, i.e., bin Laden, N. Korea, and Iran, and (2) gross mismanagement. I think that it is because we are in Iraq that Iran sorta has us by the balls right now. I mean, we could lob tons of nukes over there, but if you're talking about realistic military engagement, threats to go into Iran probably ring pretty hollow right now.

That Iran is a legitimate threat doesn't mean it would be a great idea right now though, in part because we're spread so thin right now, and in part because we have a Commander-in-Chief who is such a megalomaniac that he's willing to let this war in Iraq continue with no realistic plan just to save face. God, what a complete jackass Bush is. I've gotten numb to it, but every so often I'm reminded of what a fuckhead we have at the wheel and it just whips me into a froth. I digress.

@ superdave: Man, I hope you're right. Bush, Cheney and Rice have given me little reason to think they'll exercise the good judgment to avoid Iran, though. They've got a limited amount of time left, and Iran is the next logical step in the PNAC plan. I've read an ever-increasing number of articles suggesting that there is definitely a desire in the administration to engage Iran. Can't believe everything you read, I realize, but I'm seeing enough of it that I'm starting to believe that it could be possible.

Bush thinks he has the authority to do whatever the hell he wants. If you believe the drumbeat, we're already practically at war with Iran, so I'm not convinced that he won't pull one of his Omnipotent Executive branch moves and just do it. What's one more clusterfuck of a war to leave the next administration to unfuck?

Again, though, I hope you're right.

Re: WAR against IRAN

I don't know what to make of this, but i just realized I read a story not too long ago (within the last month, i'm sure) where, at B-52 was present at a russian air show where, iirc, a russian businessman tried to BUY THE B-52.

here's the link: http://www.abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory?id=3519118

too much stange stuff surrounding this incident, and yet..has there been much talk of it on the msm?

Re: WAR against IRAN

That's some scary thinking 88, but it's inevitable. I think I've stated numerous times what the alliance build will be like for the next great war, although, for all we know, this could just be a show of muscle and nothing more - no punches, no ko's, no roundhouses.

Re: WAR against IRAN

Imagine how nationalistic our country would be if WE DID MANDATE every male American to serve in the military. Then maybe all of the Nazi analogies would be correct..

Re: WAR against IRAN

If this administration was really worried about its citizens and about terrorism they should've gone for Iran and Syria a long time ago, and not keep sucking oil from them and making them richer by the minute but as everyone knows it's all about big oil business...

Re: WAR against IRAN

I could see us entering into a cold war if not already in one with Iran. A war through proxies as some news analysts like to say. Iran attacking us indirectly through Hezbollah and other terror groups.

For us to enter a direct war with Iran, a significant event would have to happen. Examples would be Iran attacking an ally like Israel or a terror attack on U.S. soil and killing civilians.

I don't see the war happening because of the debacle in Iraq. Things have went poorly as we all know over there and Iran would probably be worse. Bush is nearly done with his adminstration and doesn't want to do anything too unstable to cause problems for the Republicans in '08. And more importantly, the country isn't ready for another war unless absolutely necessary.
