Why does the BBC continue to call these people militants even after one of their own hacks has been kidnapped?

I wonder whether Johnston will be forced to convert to Islam like those two journos captured by 'militants' last year.
Renewed attempts are being made to find BBC Gaza correspondent Alan Johnston, who has been missing since Monday afternoon and is feared kidnapped. The BBC has sent a team to Gaza to liaise with Palestinian officials. Palestinian security officials say he was kidnapped from his car by masked gunmen, but the BBC says it cannot independently verify these reports. Other reports in Gaza say he is healthy and negotiations are under way with the abductors to secure his release.

The BBC says it is continuing to work with the Palestinian authorities and others to establish the facts surrounding Alan Johnston's disappearance. He disappeared on Monday after leaving the BBC office in Gaza City. There has been a series of abductions of Westerners in the increasingly lawless Gaza Strip. All were eventually released unharmed. The motives for the abductions were mainly local: unpaid salaries, demands for jobs or the release of jailed family members. Source
What's you're problem? This is a section for discussion of current and political events.

All I'm doing is posting stories of note - you don't like them, ignore them, or stick me on ignore. That's you're choice.

But I certainly won't stop posting these stories.

Now back to the thread - do you have any comments about this kidnapped journalist or the fact that the BBC refuse to ever acknowledge terrorism for what it is?

on topic: why do you think the BBC is bullshitting on this one? Imo cuz they're trying to negotiate with terrorists

Re: 'Militants' capture BBC Hack

Why is it Jan that the BBC rarely refers to them as terrorists?
you don't know shit about the ME unless you actually live in Tel Aviv :sarcasm:
Now that's not true - there are many here who are well informed about the middle east from all side - you however are not one of them.
Why is it Jan that the BBC rarely refers to them as terrorists?
Maybe because it's not very popular to admit that you negotiate with and pay ransom to terrorists?
Now that's not true - there are many here who are well informed about the middle east from all side - you however are not one of them.
Not being informed is one thing. Not agreeing with everything you write and refusing to accept that these days stories are merly black/white is another.

Not my point; the BBC refuse to use the word terrorist, even when their own hack is kidnapped. A militant is not a terrorist is it?

You might be a militant Jan, i might be a militant, but we aint terrorists are we? There is a difference in the English language between the two - except where the BEEB is concerned.

It is part of the new "politically correct" liberal mentality the world is slowly gravitating towards. People are becoming less likely to take a stand on any issue, for fear of labeling or offending others.

This is EXACTLY the sort of problem we see with detaining prisoners, for example. The world cries foul and demands we give Geneva Convention protections to enemy combatants who are violating the Convention by fighting out of uniform, and hiding amongst / targeting civilians. The Convention specifically says that under these circumstances, the rules do not apply.

Re: 'Militants' capture BBC Hack

because liberals only rserve the word terrorist for dead people who kill americans and OBL. i hope they kill this guy, even after the BBC pays up. maybe it will change opinions a bit. behead the guy and sned the video right to thier network. then kill chelsea clinton. and mike moore.

Mike Moore, yes. Chelsea? I don't know about that. Sure she's ugly, and it would be nice to spare the world from having to look at her.... but it isn't her fault her parents have lousy genes. Plus.... she probably had a seriously fucked up childhood. I mean.... her Dad can't keep it in his pants, and resorts to felatio of the bovine persuasion.... while her Mom pretends like nothing is happening, and actually defends his behavior because she wants to rule the world.

It's pathetic, actually. I think I would have taken the toaster into the bathtub years ago were I in that situation. I feel badly for her.
It is part of the new "politically correct" liberal mentality the world is slowly gravitating towards. Was it not the Bush administration which introduced a new vocabulary including labels like "the axis of evil" and "rogue states"? When it comes to "racial sensitivity" in our societies, I agree with you. When it comes to terrorists, no not really...
This is EXACTLY the sort of problem we see with detaining prisoners, for example. The Nazis exterminated over 6 milion jews, gypsies, gays, ... performed all kinds of medical and pharmaceutical tests on innocent people and finished off anybody who stood in their way. Yet we treated them humanely and gave them a fair trial.

I'm the first to say that fundis should be wiped out to the last one, but that doesn't mean we should treat fundi prissoners like animals in the mean time, torturing them and depriving them from basic human rights. By doing that, we lower ourselves to the same level as the Taliban, Al Quaida and the rest of that scum.

If we have the balls to say that our Western societies are civilized and evolved, we should stick to our values and norms no matter what. Abu Ghraib and Gitmo have nothing to do with justice but everything with blind revenge fueling the extremist propaganda.

To be honest, just about everything that has happened during the past 4 years only served the fundi cause. I fear that eventually this will blow up in our face big time if we keep it up. Just think about it: if Iran decides to wipe out Israel tomorrow, the US will have zero moral authority because of the invasion of Iraq...

You raise an interesting point there Jan. As an aside, in times of war should both parties follow the conventions of war? You will more than likely answer yes, in which case your above comments are entirely agreeable to me. But the answer yes, is not in fact the reality of the situation is it. One side in constricted by the conventions of war whilst the other is abides by the rules of Jihad.

How do you battle an enemy who hides amongst the civilian population, firing from civilian homes etc. How do you battle barbaric animals who execute westerners just for the fact that they have not welcomed Muhammed in their lives?
To be honest, just about everything that has happened during the past 4 years only served the fundi cause.
So its all the fault of the west is it? We should continue to allow our cities and civilians to open to attack by these monsters?

Bollocks, the two are not in the bit connected - although it has become the cry of the loony left and islamofascists (what a strange combination the two make) for the last few years.

Iraq was in breach of the treaty that ended the first Gulf war - started by Iraq's invasion of Kuwait. Had the pathetic UN not baulked at the final moment then the standing resolutions since the end of GW1 would have been enacted - but that clearly wasn't acceptable to some of you Europeans that had huge deals in the pipeline with Sadaam was it

As for Iran and Israel - one country is threatening to 'destroy' the other whilst the same UN does sweet FA about it. Should Israel be drawn into conflict with Iran than it will be defensive and not offensive.

Re: 'Militants' capture BBC Hack

i just almost started the silliest thread " the solution for the middle east" than I re-thought and just laughed. To be honest I think one side is just as bad as the other (the Arabs just as bad as the Israelis). So I'm not inclined to take sides I think the whole area should be quarantined and whoever is alive and standing in 50 years gets the others land...since both are incapable of living in peace...p.s. sorry Dave nothing personal. I studied history of the middle east briefly and that was my conclussion...Initialy (post ww2) I feel sorry how the Arabs were treated in the process of Israels creation but after the yomkipur and the 6 day war fuck em...its their fault for being disorganized idiots...can't remember is it Moshe Dayan (the one eyed general) that kicked their ass...anyway my point is that after those conflicts that should have been the end but there is no end in sight...I don't know where I'm going with this I'm just pissed of that both the Jews and the Arabs seem to be so psychotic and irrational that all I guess...don't know...
How do you battle an enemy who hides amongst the civilian population, firing from civilian homes etc. How do you battle barbaric animals who execute westerners just for the fact that they have not welcomed Muhammed in their lives?
Well, certainly not by rolling in a conventional army. We've been trying to counter guerilla tactics this way for decades and it just doesn't work.:|
So its all the fault of the west is it? We should continue to allow our cities and civilians to open to attack by these monsters?
Of course not. But carpet bombing doesn't provide an answer either. At least, not an answer we'd like...
Bollocks, the two are not in the bit connected - although it has become the cry of the loony left and islamofascists (what a strange combination the two make) for the last few years.

Everybody knew that civil war was going to be the result. And guess what... civil war it is.

As for the two being connected: well, why should anyone obide international law when even the US doesn't?

#829664Post 19 of 28

Re: 'Militants' capture BBC Hack

Abide by International Law? There was no breach of International Law in the Iraq invasion. PERIOD. This is a silly claim from the looney left.

The WMDs were part of the justification for war, along with a number of other reasons, including but not limited to:

 • Regime change in Iraq having been USA policy since the Reagan years.

 • Iraq fired upon USA/British aircraft patrolling the No Fly Zone every day for 12 years. Each instance was a violation of the Gulf War cease fire, and would have jusified the removal of Saddam.

 • Iraq violated 17 UN Resolutions on it's weapons programs, includng final Resolution 1441 which specifically called for serious consequences for failure to prove disarmament. Saddam was defiant to the very end, refusing to cooperate.

The opposition to the invasion from countries like France and Germany had nothing to do with their expectations of hard times in Iraq. Their oppositon was due to their oil deals, plain and simple. They had vested interests in keeping Saddam in power, and weren't about to upset their situation by helping to depose him.

One country invades because of oil deals, others oppose because of it. Isn't it a funny world we live in? [/sarcasm]

#829689Post 21 of 28

Re: 'Militants' capture BBC Hack

The BBC is impartial.
It would be wrong to label a group as "terrorists" when they could be "milliants". Sorry Dave, if you do choose to use a fair and unbiased website for your news then you'll have to put up with the semantics.

To be fair i pay for the BBC through a special tax. please don't moan about a service you are lucky enough to use for free. :)

It could be worse, you may have to rely on Fox for your news. ;)
