Today Hrant Dink, the editor of the Armenian-Turkish language weekly Agos magazine and a well-known commentator on Armenian affairs, was shot in front of his office. A political murderd obviously...

And what did I read in the paper today? In Istanbul a father keeps his daughter of 17 on a chain. His daughter wants to get married, but he's against it, so this is his way of preventing that she runs away...

Seriously, Turkey might be a "modern" muslim state, but they're still lightyears away from EU membership...

Re: And these guys want to join the EU???

sad generalization i admit....

but pretty much every country dominated by that religion, to the point where it is involved in law and politics, will never progress. it cant happen and goes against nearly every edict of the religion. and its a shame too, because its only a minority of the people who fall under the title of "muslim" and the majortiy are normally very nice people. but alas, combine islam with anything and it eventually leads to violence and disagreement, and that cannot be argued. its a shame they would rather go down fighting than to concede some things to the majority of civilization, whom are willing to welcome them with open arms, but they wont/cant, because of hopes to one day have rule over everything.

just look at that shit about the mosques in the UK and aussie. its disgusting. they have to clean house or accept that we (the collective non middleeastern world) dont have to concede or accept anything in regards to them.

Damn. Its difficult to make any comment that doesn't sound as Sean puts it, "generalization". Perhaps one shouldn't care when one sees and reads this crap. The world has come a long way in its civilization but obviously not long enough.

Not really. Nations such as Singapore and Malaysia, which are predominantly Muslim, are doing very well and are running very well under Islamics. What's more is that Malaysia has gone more from progressive Islam to more fundamentalistic but still retaining capitalistic and modern values.

This is just a bad instance and is a really poor representation for Turkey. And you can't really compare locking up little girls and what not because there are sick fucks everywhere, more notably in the states.

Re: And these guys want to join the EU???

It's just sympromatic for the political conditions out there in Turkey, progressive for a Muslim state but not ready to join Europe by a long shot. And why would they anyway? It's all economics, but part of that can be solved by getting trading treaties in place - you'd have the economic benefits with less of the political hassle to worry about.

And to think that they're amazed by the rejection of the European constitution when that same club actually considers admitting Turkey to the EU...
