Troop Surge?

Anyone planning on watching Bush tonight describe his new plan for Iraq? My dog has obedience classes at the time, so I'm gonna miss it, but I'll definitely catch up on it afterwards, at least for as long as I can take listening to Bush blather.

I was initially on board with the troop surge idea, but now I'm less persuaded that it's the right call. Believe it or not, the straw that broke the camel's back was listing to Senator Gordon Smith (R-OR) on CNN this morning. Guy made a lot of sense.

Check it out if you're interested:

At the end of the day, I'm still open to the idea of a troop surge if there is a plan that accompanies it beyond, "We'll have more people there," but I think Smith is right that it is ultimately the Iraqis that need to make political decisions to bring stability to the region -- put another way, that the solution to the problem may not be a military one.

I dunno. I also agree with him that if Bush decides that come hell or high water, more troops are going, Congress can't just cut off funding. That's good for no one.

Should be interesting. I'm really curious to see how Bush presents this -- I have an open mind about it, but he needs to be sure he follows his own advice from a few weeks ago, that more troops for the sake of more troops without a new plan isn't really a solution.

Re: Troop Surge?

I'm not watching. Maybe I should but I just can't get enough energy up to watch this guy. On the other hand he is talking about sending more people into harms way so I should damn well care about it.

Re: Troop Surge?

Just saw a headline indicating that Sam Fucking Brownback is opposing a troop surge as well. This will really be interesting...

Re: Troop Surge?

Well...the man is the Chief of our military. I don't see how they are gonna stop him if he is set on it.

Re: Troop Surge?

i think it is a good idea.. Bush has to do something to try to fix his legacy.. his dad was crying for the other day because George has screwed it up so bad.

have any of you read the book "Sleeping with the Devil" by Robert Baer.. Good book on what has been happening in the Middle East over the last 80 years..

Who gives a shit about his legacy? Over 3000 people have died while Bush tried to establish his legacy -- he has lost the privilege of asking more people to die so that he can look good in the history books.

the number #1 concern has to be doing the best thing for our country, period. If he'd followed that simple and obvious rule rather than looking to pad his ego 4 years ago, we might not be in this mess.

Re: Troop Surge?

first, anyone that mentions the death toll in iraq is avoiding other stats on modes/methods/causes of death.

second, what if this surge was simply to put more troops on the ground in iraq for an impending war with Iran?

Re: Troop Surge?

^If that was the case I don't think 20K more troops is gonna be enough.

What exactly are you implying here? That the death toll really isn't all that bad? Keep in mind here, these are able-bodied young men and women who are probably in the best shape of their lives. Comparing the death toll in Iraq with the death rate of the general populace from other causes back here, which cuts across the entire population isn't a fair comparison.

If you look at 3000 dead soldiers and think, "Gee, that many would have died of other causes if they were still here at home, so why not send them to die in Iraq?," then you, sir, are one sick puppy.

And might I add, the 3000 doesn't count over 10,000 who were injured seriously enough to keep the soldier out of combat. Are you going to point me to the stats on people's arms and legs spontaneously falling off?
second, what if this surge was simply to put more troops on the ground in iraq for an impending war with Iran?
Are you advocating invading Iran?

Re: Troop Surge?

the only thing keeping this from instantly causing fighting is that it wasnt an official embassy and iraqi troops were involved.

we should send a few americans to seize the iranian embassy, and hold people, then in 20 years, we can have one of the kidnappers become our president.

oh wait, that already happened.
