Anyone notice that now that Obama is starting to pick up some momentum, more and more people -- specifically those who would oppose him -- are conspicuously dropping his middle name into discussion?

he's potentially gonna be the JFK of our time.

Re: Barrack Hussein Obama

He doesn't have a snowballs chance in hell of beating Hillary for the nomination. Just wait and see.

Re: Barrack Hussein Obama

Sigh...difficult to argue against vastly naive generalizations...

"I know! Let's tie 'Obama' with 'Hussein' every chance we get! If we equate his politics with Islam, he'll never win!"

Much as I'd like to believe the opposite, America is not ready for Obama or Hillary. I want to see how the House is run with Pelosi at the reins (and how the media ultimattely portray her)...

Re: Barrack Hussein Obama

It is sad but true...he will not win with a name like that in these times. Perhaps he should change his name to John Smith.

Re: Barrack Hussein Obama

Ya, you guys are right. We already see this shit with hollywood and actors with pseudo names to make it easier and catchy for people to remember.

Re: Barrack Hussein Obama

Saw a re-run of Late Night with Conan, when Conan was in Chicago (electric atmosphere!), and Obama was the guest. Very personable, seems like he has this air of approachability, seems kind of a lost trait in this age of politics.

Re: Barrack Hussein Obama

Isn't politics great? The dirty side is fun to watch.

I like Obama's charisma, but I don't know much about what he would do if President. I'm sure we'll hear more about him as time goes by. At this point, I feel he's really going for the VP job with Hillary going for President.

Re: Barrack Hussein Obama

was watching CNN this morning. Wolf Blitzer was apologizing for a "typographical error" in a story about bin Laden in which the graphic "Where's Osama" accidentally read "Where's Obama." And these guys are supposed to be the liberals?

Re: Barrack Hussein Obama

i love how everyone is talking about his personality and very little about his values and his political and economic beliefs.

this is why we've got idiots running the country. because people vote on personality. it's so easy not to think critically about candidates, that thinking in general has nearly become obsolete.

Re: Barrack Hussein Obama

your comment is very true, And ppl will flame it, because if those who are on his wagon right now actually looked shit up once in awhile, you'd realize he has spent his career as a strict party line politician, his voting is IDENTICAL to hillary clintons. IDENTICAL. look at actions, not speeches

I dunno, although I generally agree with the idea that the masses are asses, we're a long ways out from the 2008 election right now, and discussions about potential candidates tend to be based upon much broader criteria at this stage, including things like electability, likeability, etc. Big donors are trying to figure out where they want to channel their cash, and no one wants to throw money behind someone who isn't going to be able to win, no matter what they think of their policies.

The reality is that there is a large part of the population that does vote based upon such touchy-feely things; it would be stupid for those people that do look at candidates more critically to ignore the overarching question of whether this person can actually win, so the very superficial discussion of presidential candidates that happens at this point in election cycles does serve a useful purpose, I think.

When we we leading up to the 2004 election, people would ask me who I wanted to take the democratic nomination, and my answer was always the same: anyone who can beat George W. Bush (thanks a heap, Iowa and New Hapshire  ). Things are not so grave this time around, at least looking at the current batch of would-be candidates, so I plan to be a lot pickier, but the ability to resonate with the masses and actually win the election is a point of legitimate inquiry.

i wrote a really long response to all the reasons why Obama would make a horrible president, divide the country into more than just left vs. right fragments, and is not just a democratic mouthpiece and a liberal idealogue, but an equally progressive candidate like Hilary Clinton who, so far, has been able to cover this with fuzzy moderation. But then, I'm just doing all the work for some of you. maybe i'll post it later.

here's a question for those who have pointed out his personality:

What kind of personality do you think is necessary for a president?

Simply put, he should have one. Look back to the last few races:

-Bush II v Kerry (complete bore) -Bush II v Gore (complete stiff) -Clinton v. Dole (completely out of touch) -Clinton v Bush (Clinton's the more affable guy, but he actually owes his presidency to Ross Perot) -Bush I v Dukakis ('nuff said) -Reagan v. Mondale (duh)

I guess in retrospect, there's a legitimate question as to whether the winners were more helped by their own positive personality traits, or their opponents' lack thereof.

shitty in what respect? His voting record shows that he's definitely a democrat, but I don't see the "strict party line" behavior you're referencing. He's not exactly blazing any trails, but what "good" republican legislation did he vote against?

Re: Barrack Hussein Obama

im not having a go at the dem vs repub thing.

but he is far from the centrist enigmatic guy the speech writers and media are making him out to be. that is the point. he isnt any JFK or Reagan where they always openly tried to do the right thing for 90% of us, but more of a guy who obviously asks his party leadership what to do. the evidence is there.

Re: Barrack Hussein Obama
im not having a go at the dem vs repub thing.
That's not what I mean. I guess my point is that he came into office when the Republicans were reveling in the glory of their "mandate" from the 2004 elections, and democrats had very little power to do much of anything but sit back and watch. What do you expect him to do? Vote in favor of legislation he opposes to show that he can "reach across the aisle?"

What I'm saying is this -- you're painting him as if he is a guy who will ignore the common good to vote with the democrats no matter what. I say prove it. He's a democrat, and he's going to vote with the democrats most of the time. This should not be news to anyone. What I'm asking for is an example of some legislation that you would expect him to be on board with, but that he voted against -- where he put partisan politics over principle.

That's the sort of thing that pisses me off -- when partisan rancor gets in the way of actually doing the right thing. I'm not aware of any legislation of the past two years, though, that was so important that a "no" vote would reach that level.
