Should be interesting over the next 3-6 months as we see all the players vying for position.

Re: Rudy Jumps in...

He showed himself to be a true leader and a decent human being (unlike Bush on both counts) after 9-11. Hes got the leadership skills and business experience for sure.

I still cant forgive his stances on the homeless and mentally ill (or NY Clubs!!) during his time in office tho. If only he was a democrat.

my 2 cents.

Re: Rudy Jumps in...

his stance on the homeless wasnt to kill them like we NY'ers like to tell outsiders, but he made the cops take em off the streets and into shelters. )OK, he forcibly did it, but for good cause. health most importantly.

his clubs crackdown. well, i hated it, but i at least understand why. if i were a politician or a cop during his candidicy, well, the clubs didnt hide what was going on very well. they acted equally stupid, dumping unconcious people into the streets in 20 degree weather...

but aside from that shit, i cant argue with what he did too much. there are a ton of, and yes a ton, of little things he did to piss ppl off. and 9/11 masked it. but i think he is a decent guy.

the guy to watch out for is mike bloomberg. he is really good. really good. he hasnt ridden one party line at all. he breaks everyone's chops as needed, cut the beurocratic bullshit, got the civil servant unions thier contracts, while not giving in to demands, and keeping the bottom line fair. he aint personable. but the only the teachers really beef with him, because he fired/cut jobs within the management heirarchy. outside of that, and maybe ben can chip in, i dont think bloomy has done much bad.

Re: Rudy Jumps in...

the fact that bloomberg isn't much in the news or talked about by many people is a sign he must be doing a decent job. Keeping a low profile and doing your duties is good for business.

Re: Rudy Jumps in...

i cant complain, but i would ask ben. i only work in NYC, he lives there.

but i love what he and joel klein did. its finally paying off according my sis, and she was one of the people directly affected by it, and one of the ppl who HATED it early.

Re: Rudy Jumps in...

I'm a huge supporter of Bloomberg (in fact, I actually voted for him twice ;) ). You're spot on with his politics there sean. He's never played sides and has always been more interested in the progression of our city and country as a whole, rather than playing partisan politics (hell, he even campaigned for lieberman in CT).

Yeah, it's the teachers that got pissed at him, but like we've discussed here many a times, that damn teachers union and the management hierarchy had ruined education in this city and he did what it took to get that power back and get things straightened out again. The union demanding tenure for shitty teachers...boot the bums out!

As for Giuliani, I've always been a bit of mixed bag. What he did with the executive branch (and Bush has been a staunch follower of his in this respect) is appalling. He changed the very nature of the relationship between the executive and legislative by reinterpreting laws (and dusting off a few old forgotten (for good reason) laws, ie. cabaret law) in a manner of his choosing.

On the positive side, he took a tough stance on both crime and corruption (albeit, in the wrong order in my opinion), which both had to be done. Problem was that he took his fight on crime too far.

One thing I learned in law school is that police have a certain amount of discretion in their application of the law. I don't mean this in the corrupt manner, but in a more humane manner. Not every crime needs to be dealt with in exactly the same manner, nor should it, and a police officer should be able to take extenuating circumstances into consideration when arresting criminals. As a former prosecutor himself, he took this away from the police forcing them to arrest everyone, regardless of crime, and that does nothing but weaken the standing of police in the community.

So there's good and bad, imo, regarding Giuliani, but a bloomberg run and I'll be out there supporting a republican (ok, democrat in republican clothing) to the end ;)

But really, all this discussion is entirely moot, because neither one of them has even a decent shot at actually getting the republican nomination. Both of their stances on social issues are way too liberal (abortion, gay marriage, etc.) and northeastern to ever be able to make a serious run for president.

Re: Rudy Jumps in...

that is the one reason why i think rudy will get it. right now the republican party feels like the boston red sox in 1986. they had the enemy out of the way, and only had to deal with a second rate group, but then ..... a slow grounder.;.....a HUGE ERROR....

now they are realizing that the party line, paid for, stances wont and will not work, so maybe, they pull it together, realize that the dems dont have a decent candidate for next time, and throw the kitchen sink behind rudy

and if bloomy ever ran for office, i would take a month off and campiagn for him.

similar to this year, the yanks/the repubs are in their decline and the mets/dems are ascending...get over it!

Re: Rudy Jumps in...

My guess is the front runner for the elephants is McCain. But if Hillary goes for it I wouldn't be surprised to see Rice go up against her.

Re: Rudy Jumps in...

why cant mets fans admit you won it on an error. it isnt a lie, its on video, its well known, there isnt a conspiricy!!!

Re: Rudy Jumps in...

No one here is denying that the mets got lucky and won it thanks to an error, it's your snobbishly calling the 86 Mets a second rate club that I take offense to, jackass! Fuckin yankees fans
and northeastern to ever be able to make a serious run for president.
Ive heard that theory before, but I dont understand why that is a notion

is it the liberal issues that you eluded to or is it a statisitcs type situation where, over the centuries, northeastern candidates have not been too succesful??

Serious question.

#754699Post 14 of 23

Re: Rudy Jumps in...

northeastern candidates are like NY ppl, rash, rude and unlikeable to the rest of the country.

He certainly didnt do it for the good of humanity!! or their health - but too get the 'eyesores' off the streets. This resulted in many many people being dumped in other bourroughs (or other area's far from their usual locations) -where they had no or little support networks or access to free services etc.etc.
Whilst it 'may' have beena noble notion (but I doubt it) the execution of the policy was a disaster for many homless people who suffered far more, than if they had been left alone.

much like Texans then??

but again seriously - does that mean Hillary has a better or worse chance (cos shes not from NY state)!

Re: Rudy Jumps in...

i, unlike that fat cunt mike moore, will move to canada if she wins.

hillary = satan, and only won because NY is so filled with minorities and city voters, who are democrat. a monkey could have won the election here. outside of the local level, the republican party is nearly non existent in NY.

Re: Rudy Jumps in...

Yeah, pretty much any dem could've won that senate seat...and I wouldn't be leaving if she won (she'd at least be a hell of an improvement over the current jackass' administration), but I for one can't stand her. God damn poll defined candidate...It'd be nice if she actually had the guts to stand on her own principles, rather than a poll's.
