Re: The Real War on Terror
We knew that we weren't going to completely eliminate the Taliban in Afghanistan, but knew that we could disrupt them enough to limit future terrorist attacks. Before 9/11, Osama and his thugs were basically running the country and making deals with Halliburton allegedly. Today, the Taliban is hiding in the hills. Besides we didn't use many troops at all to bring down the Taliban in Afghanistan. We used mostly special forces and paid off warlords.

Well, they were hiding in the hills shortly after 9/11, but I'm not sure that's still so much the case. The article I cited seems to suggest that they've regrouped and are out in the open again.

And Osama isn't walking around a free man. You make it sound like he's at Blockbuster renting DVDs and eating dinner at Red Lobster. The moment we find out where he is then we'll bomb him like we did Zarqawi. Which means he's probably hiding in a cave somewhere isolated from humanity fearing the same fate as Zarqawi.

Well, that's probably a fair point. It bothers me, though, that coming up on 5 years after 9/11, that dude has still not been brought to justice. What happened to Bush's statements after 9/11?

"The most important thing is for us to find Osama bin Laden. It is our number one priority and we will not rest until we find him." President Bush, 9/13/01
"I want justice...There's an old poster out West, as I recall, that said, 'Wanted: Dead or Alive,'" President Bush, 9/17/01
The truth is that we devoted a disproportionate amount of military resources to Iraq before the job was done in Afghanistan. OBL has not been our number one priority, not for a long time -- and while we've been on this Iraq boondoogle, the Taliban, which we all thought were pretty much done, have had an opportunity to reconstitute and regroup, which of course requires more of our already stretched military. Or maybe they've still been there in force all along, and the reports we received of their demise was just propaganda. I have so little trust in Bush at this stage, I wouldn't put it past him to have made shit up about our success in Afghanistan to speed things towards his pet project in Iraq.
And I agree, by the way, that you can't assume that the new leaders will be able to pick up right where the old one left off. That's why I really think that getting OBL ought to be our number 1 priority. Knock him out, and although I'm sure it would not signal the death knell for Al Qaeda, it will have more of an impact that knocking out the next in a line of people that step up to be number-whatever in the organization. FFS, from what I understand, even our folks didn't know shit about this new dude in Iraq before he was announced to be stepping in for Zarqawi.

We've been waiting years for the next Michael Jordan in basketball.
The NBA could use another Jordan, too. Wade, perhaps? I watched him in Indy at the NCAA tournament a few years ago when he was with Marquette (beating my team, unfortunately) and he was just sick. After his performance in the Finals, who knows...
