Why does this "Have to Happen.."

In my opinion this bill is a front that the government is using so that if the time comes for revolution the Government can regulate what information is shared and by what means that information is shared.. They are afraid of smart phone technology and people able to unite and share information almost instantly.

Egypt's ability to flood the streets in several cities all at once to protest scared the shit out of every government worldwide. They realized they couldn't control the people like they want too.

This bill is the beginning of the end friends. Enjoy the peace while you still can.

its not about the spread of information as u speak of more to do with the free spread of illegal files, since the digital age companies that deal with digital data ( music, software, films etc etc ) have been suffering badly because now the shoplifter just sits on his or her sorry ass and "shoplifts" from the comfort of their own home, i think this is what this bill is all about.

a guy i know had a major release on quite a major techno label, on the due release date he googled the song name and there was 9 pages of pirate sites offering a free download, this is not an isolated case... its fact... piracy is killing industry because it has become more accessible to more people and more and more people are willing to take the risk especially due to the fact there is another smaller internet industry based on feeding internet pirates needs.

ever download an album illegally ?

I personally think we should be redistributing the efforts of the productive class (their music, compositions, albums, etc...) and give them to those who cannot afford to make music or collect it (which is largely due to inequalities arising from historical wrongs).

For every man, a Guetta Album.

oh don't be silly. this won't be abused. the very thought gives me the vapors!

Re: Protect IP / SOPA

This bill is kinda ironic. All we hear in the media is about wealth inequality and want wealth redistribution, but all this bill would do is put more money in the pockets of the entertainment industry ("the rich"). No one seems to mind these rich people though...... wonder why?

I agree something should be done about the illegal downloads of music and movies, but this bill is taking it so far overboard it's scary.

I've heard a rumor that physical cds will become extinct in the near future and I'm sure dvds will follow in a few years. One thing the entertainment industry could do to help themselves is lower the price of downloads, especially movies. Music files are getting cheaper, especially in our genre, but movie downloads are still $15-20 or more. Without the cost of production on a physical disc, shouldn't the price be lower? If movie downloads were $10 or less I and many more people would be inclined to buy them more often.

Re: Protect IP / SOPA

As far as I'm concerned, the fears about the potential for abuse with this legislation are also present with net neutrality. I can also envision the latter making the former easier to implement.

good point. maybe we should ban talent too? It's not fair that some people have ability and others do not. If we ban talent, then nobody will feel unequal.

you're missing my point here, the point of this bill is to protect those that have talent from the average everyday "shoplifter", just because its a crime "on line" doesn't make it any different from walking into a record store and swiping a cd imo its just become more accessible world wide because there is less risk than walking into a store and having to over come the stores security measures

why should we protect the haves from the have nots? if we banned the recording of music altogether, there would be nothing to steal. sounds like you're committed to a goal, but only wanting to go half the distance.

because where do u draw the line between have and have nots ? what about those that make enough money to be able to buy shit and then say they don't have enough money, if u let one group of people ( the have nots ) have their way then everyone will just take advantage of it no matter what there financial state is, you cant have a rule for one and not the other, that is just ludicrousness ... i mean i,ll like a couple of ferrari's a nice big mansion etc etc but why can't i have them ? effectively i,m a have not but that doesn't stop a person with a mansion and a couple of ferrari's being a have not because maybe he doesn't have a private jet or a yaught etc etc... do u see my point ?

Excellent point. I think you understand me better than I understand myself. Perhaps there should be a law that prohibits anyone from driving anything other than a ford taurus? I don't think it to be socially (or morally) acceptable to rub one's wealth in other peoples faces. Ferrari-owners do exactly that.

Indeed, we should not have a rule for the haves and another rule for the have nots. Instead, we should liken our rules to equalify the haves to the level of the have nots. Only then will true social justice be realized. On that note, I find it rather disturbing that you berate the have nots and believe we should let the 'haves' be the lodestar from which we create our rules. I thought it was fairly obvious based on the current popular economic theory that wealth gained by one individual always deprives another individual of their wealth. As it has become standard parlance, the rich become richer - therefore, the poor must be getting poorer. Since the poors become more poor involuntarily (i.e., whatever the rich do to get richer is at the expense of, and the rights of, the poor), it is unconscionable that we set laws tempered to those who, essentially, steal from the poor.

i think you've completely miss understood me, many people with talent have worked their ass off for years ( usually from nothing ) trying to get to a stage where an actual product is ready for market just for someone to have the ability to take that product as their own, this is wrong imo... i mean u work your ass off all day in your job and maybe by some nice clothes or whatever pleases you but how would you feel if i were to walk into your house and take those clothes for myself ?

the system as it stands has flaws that many people are using to their advantage, the system has to have "something to strive for" so that it drives people to find out new things, either that or we all become robotic numb skulls living the same life with the same tools and the same things throughout, i suppose you could take the argument one step further and say this is a better for the have not people but do you really think this world would be where it is technology wise if the system you are suggesting was in place ?

there are always 2 sides to every argument and in some ways i wish some of your system was in place for the severe have nots ( i.e. africa etc ) but come on man this is something completely different we are talking about

Software Makers Shun SOPA Bill

In a reversal, Business Software Alliance now says the proposed anti-piracy law overreaches.

November 22, 2011 12:22 PM A group that represents a number of major software developers, including Microsoft, Adobe, and CA, has withdrawn its support for the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) bill, which would require Internet companies and other players in the tech ecosystem to deny services to suspected software pirates and copyright violators.

Hopefully this bill dies off...
