To make an omelette you got to break some eggs...

The prospects for President Barack Obama's $447 billion jobs plan grew dimmer Monday as he unveiled the fine print of how it would be paid for—primarily through tax increases that Republicans said would destroy jobs, not create them. Mr. Obama proposed limiting itemized deductions for families with taxable income of $250,000 or more a year, ending tax breaks for oil companies and corporate jet owners, and cutting out a tax break for investment-fund managers. The White House says the tax changes would take effect in 2013 and estimates they would raise $467 billion in additional revenue over 10 years.

More likely some of the proposals in the bill could be passed piecemeal or could be included in a broader deficit-reduction plan crafted by a congressional supercommittee charged with finding at least $1.2 trillion in savings over the next 10 years. Mr. Obama will submit his own deficit plan of more than $2 trillion over 10 years to the committee on Sept. 19, administration officials said. That plan will include budget cuts, including to programs such as Medicare, not just tax increases like the ones he's proposing to pay for his jobs bill, administration officials said.

“The people of this country work hard to meet their responsibilities. The question tonight is whether we’ll meet ours. The question is whether, in the face of an ongoing national crisis, we can stop the political circus and actually do something to help the economy; whether we can restore some of the fairness and security that has defined this nation since our beginning,” Mr. Obama said. Key aspects include proposals to rebuild and modernize US infrastructure and schools, financial aid to cash-poor state and local governments, job training to help the long-term unemployed, and steps to encourage hiring of military veterans.
Do we agree?

Re: GOP Balks at Taxes to Finance Jobs Plan (American Jobs Act 2011)

I agree just that it is probably not going to pass, then the Republicans will put up some version of their own bill allowing the top 1% to make ever more money via additional loopholes, and then the Democrats will be deemed anti American for not going along with it.

This IS the only way to MAYBE solve US problems. The politicians and the public need to grow up.

I think most of the public has grown up, it is the dipshits in congress right now. What is the % of Americans who think Congress is total shit right now? The highest ever. Those idiots need to learn to compromise.

Re: GOP Balks at Taxes to Finance Jobs Plan (American Jobs Act 2011)

i'm all for financing jobs if it is proven to help the joblessness, but the track record of this administration using a shitload of money to stimulate our economy and jobs isn't very good... who wants to pay for all of this "talk" when we've already spent a shitload on a stimulus bill that didn't do dick? i certainly understand the skepticism.

Word up. The demagoguery that's been going on is obstructing the public from recognizing that this shit isn't going to solve itself with tax cuts alone. It's just fucking appalling to see people defend the tax breaks afforded to those that least need it.

Unfortunately, there's still a lot of people that prefer to be told what they want to hear by politicians that are more interested in their own careers than having to deal with the harsher reality being presented. Here's hoping that a wake up call is heeded.

Re: GOP Balks at Taxes to Finance Jobs Plan (American Jobs Act 2011)

Fuck me what more proof do you need:
[h=3]Summary of Key Findings[/h] The U.S. Census Bureau announced today that in 2010, median household income declined, the poverty rate increased and the percentage without health insurance coverage was not statistically different from the previous year. Real median household income in the United States in 2010 was $49,445, a 2.3 percent decline from the 2009 median. The nation's official poverty rate in 2010 was 15.1 percent, up from 14.3 percent in 2009 ─ the third consecutive annual increase in the poverty rate. There were 46.2 million people in poverty in 2010, up from 43.6 million in 2009 ─ the fourth consecutive annual increase and the largest number in the 52 years for which poverty estimates have been published. The number of people without health insurance coverage rose from 49.0 million in 2009 to 49.9 million in 2010, while the percentage without coverage −16.3 percent - was not statistically different from the rate in 2009. This information covers the first full calendar year after the December 2007-June 2009 recession. See section on the historical impact of recessions.
