.....or it could be another Skyline.

I seriously hope it's good. Aaron Eckhart is a pretty good actor, and I generally like what he's in.

Re: Battle: Los Angeles

It's being touted as Black Hawk Down meets ... I dunno, Independence Day? If anything, it ought to be good eye candy.

Re: Battle: Los Angeles

Battle: Los Angeles - could have been a pretty kick ass movie if it didn't give in to all the war movie clichés that it dry humps endlessly. It looks like Independence Day meets District 9, but it's more the worse parts of ID4 meets the bad parts of Blackhawk Down, and it doesn't really bother to hide the fact that they really like the District 9 prawns to the point where they're practically ripping them off for the look of the aliens or the way the film is shot - jerky cam galore.

The characters are really, really stock - Aaron Eckhart is the guilt ridden Staff Sargent that feels responsible for the loss of his troops, there's a member of the team whose brother was under his command. It doesn't really take a huge stretch of the imagination to figure out how this relationship ends. And wtf is Ne-Yo doing in this film?

If you're looking for something to tide you over until the summer dumbness comes around, this is pretty much the only game in town to get your sci-fi fix. It's a shame that they went autopilot on the screenplay and the characters, considering this could have been much, much more.

Re: Battle: Los Angeles

If you want to see a movie that endlessly rips off District 9 in the way of a look, sure, knock yourself out. There's a flying saucer with detachable drone ships that was kind of cool.

Apart from that, it'd probably make for a better DVD rental.

^ :roflmao: you beat me to it. i saw the half star review at work today. i was hoping it would be better than Skyline, but apparently not. I'm not saying I'm a lemming and will follow what anyone says, but since Roger Ebert put this in the shitpile, I'm saving my $7.50 which I love to spend after work checking flicks out, but will instead spend that on a pint of Guiness this month.

Fuck major studios, my favs anymore are finanaced by arthouse companies.

I thought it was better than Skyline, but only slightly - that's NOT an endorsement. The more I think about this, the more I think there was a pretty good movie somewhere in there, but it got lost in the constant borrowing stuff from better films.

Critics vs viewers bit of a difference....

imdb has this one at about 6.8 too.

Re: Battle: Los Angeles

^yeah no kidding, this has that imdb score with about 5k votes now. sounds like standard mindless action. probably worth a watch for some good action, but nothing more than another generic independence day clone.

Re: Battle: Los Angeles

i could not agree more with such candor; but bro, L.A is really that foul -- more pronounced with regards to the smell, and related (- subjective aspects of it -); stupid, timid, critical mass media demonizing/.

get the ball sack hard from the still hard to kill suckas. yup. ther's some right action in yo face - of initiated innervates; hard immolates, and headlong - strong strivings live and direct. respect the competent; mastered group co-op heavencent. get the death sentence. we drop bombs liek vietnam for our cunning enemies. it's the bomb! watch it all falls, be gonr! like all myriads of noobs riding durty on the high horse with no remorese. but shit, this won't don't phase the steez. we already the untapped main trapeze.

cruise thru downy, southgate, el segundo; and for fucks sake, even orange coutry. shameful explotation is in excess here... mad wrong. ( i assume it's relatively the same all elsewhere, too.) this is, to an extent, - been begrudged by resent and false conclusion - made by the media spasmns.; and the whole showtheast, and mideast shit epress.

ufo armadas! land at our pad! if you're down, holla for a in the clear LZ 8)

The movie was bad but I agree it wasn't a half star bad.

Re: Battle: Los Angeles

lol it's fucking hollywood bros. good film died a long time ago.

i can sit and rage my critical thinking while watching a flick, but i find it much more optimal to allocate my time wasted -- sitting in a crap fucking theatre chair -- by disregarding my anticipated preconceptions, and thereby enjoying the fuck out of of it... even though it sucks ass. of course, i dare not go to fast dollah quick hitter cheesebusters like these, unless it's with a broad.

so anyways, i saw this with a big group this weekend, and it was fun. but i agree, another case of beating a :deadhorse: -- when it comes to producing films. liek highstella said. yet i would call it biting instead of borrowing.

movies well done all around, with dynamic themese and, great stories i go see again... solo.

Re: Battle: Los Angeles

What a great fuckin movie. I'm sorry to be the only one disagreeing with all the sentiments in here. To draw a parallel of this comparatively well made movie to Skyline is honestly similar to watching the movie with your blindfolds on.

The gradual elimination of the individuals in the group who weren't always at the forefront (so that the viewer doesn't form an emotional connection with) to the unexpected introductions/assumptions as to why planet earth was being targeted along with a sensible reason and strategy of defense and self-educated retaliation against the enemy ending with the surviving members of the Marine Corps. walking back into battle reminded me so much of the end of Black Hawk Down where a US military personnel walks right back into the combat zone (which is supposedly a "hollywoodizwed" version of a true event) despite losing most/all important members of his team.

Of course there are ridiculous interpretations (to me) that they put an entire platoon of the Marines in jeopardy to rescue 5 people, 2 of whom were blonde kids (both of whom survived) and they ended up killing a mexican dad at that price, really bought a ridiculous twist to the movie.

But all said and done, I fuckin loved it all the way through considering the plot, execution, planning, cinematography, casting, and how well they preserved the integrity of the surviving members.I didn't see the guilt of Aron Eckhardt (until provoked towards the end) and no where at all did I see any Prawns from District 9.

But given a plethora of previously introduced comparatively moderate sci-fi flix, I thought this was much better. Yes it over-glorifies the marines but it at least does it in a more believable way, gradually removing members of the team to highlight the vulnerability of the best.

I give it a good and well deserved 7/10 and so worthy of a first watch, graphics effects and everything.

Re: Battle: Los Angeles

I'm always excited to see movies with Los Angeles in it but this was a 2 hour snoozefest. It was completely uninteresting. I didn't find myself caring about anything that happened on screen. The only thing I liked about it was trying to spotcheck the locations. Big pass on this.
