“Sucker Punch” is an epic action fantasy that takes us into the vivid imagination of a young girl whose dream world provides the ultimate escape from her darker reality. Unrestrained by the boundaries of time and place, she is free to go where her mind takes her, but her incredible adventures blur the lines between what’s real and what is imaginary…with potentially tragic consequences.
This is from Zack Snyder who directed 300, Watchmen and Dawn of the Dead. Looks pretty bad ass.

Well Watchmen was a giant snorefest; this one looks like it might have a bit more happening in it..... :)

Re: Sucker Punch (2011)

This pretty much sucked. I was snoozing most of the time by the generic plot and action. It was just an excuse to put hot chicks in movie in which the director could play around with a ton of special effects. 5.5/10.

Baby Doll was hot though.

Saw the trailer for this and also read about it on Wiki - even from there I couldnt tell what the hell was going on, so I'll give this a miss!

Re: Sucker Punch (2011)

Story made zero sense, but I have to credit Zack Snyder for having such a vivid imagination...and possibly ADHD when writing the script.

Fuck it. It was purdy, but about as smart as a bag of hammers.

Re: Sucker Punch (2011)

^Exactly. I'm not quite sure of the overall themes of sexual abuse or exploitation/prostitution of all of the girls, what do you say? Note, I really like Zack Snyders movies, I think he has a great eye for doing awesome non conventional stuff with film, so nothing against him. This seemed to just be an movie about jail bait and samurai/dragon/Nazi warriors.

Re: Sucker Punch (2011)

Yeah, Snyder is very talented behind the camera and knows how to make a movie pretty exciting visually - but he's a lot of flash and not very much substance. Even with strong material backing him up; like 300 and Watchmen - two really good graphic novels that he managed to make look absolutely spectacular onscreen, but he couldn't capture the writing magic that made the comics so special. And while his remake of Dawn of the Dead was a kick ass action film and featured an unbelievably well done first 15 minutes, it pales in the substance department when it comes to the political/social satire element of the original. I'm looking forward to seeing what he'll turn out with Superman, having Christopher Nolan "supervising" him - I'm hoping that there will be something other than the eye popping visuals that he excels at so well.

The more I think about this, the more it has in common with the Heavy Metal movie from 1981 - it's practically a live action version of everything Heavy Metal was about, but with the raunch and nudity toned down and the fantasy/sci fi elements cranked up. It's a fucking amazing movie to look at, but some of the elements you mentioned - a bit of a misogynistic tone to the film with the girls constantly being hyper-sexualized and looking so young. It's a good thing that he had the story mention at the beginning of the film that Baby Doll was 20 years old, or some parental groups would be up in arms - but then again, Tarantino got away with some of the most brutal elements in Kill Bill Vol 1 by going the route of presenting it in an anime format and nobody bitched. But, on the other had, Kill Bill was unapologeticly a hard R and this is PG 13 - you're going for different audiences with each rating.

Re: Sucker Punch (2011)

I absolutely loved everything about this ... bloody fantastic movie.... dark theme which was hard to swallow & easy to relate to... I guess thats the reason I enjoyed the movie as well. Visually stunning however. Nice to see some super critics up in here...lol

Re: Sucker Punch (2011)

I also really enjoyed it...saw it in IMAX with a bunch of friends after being told how god awful it was by the rest of our friends. I spent the first 1/3 of the movie being super critical and waiting for it to be as bad as they had said, but ended up really liking it. One thing I thought was great was the music...and a discussion afterwords (SPOILER) was that during all of her fantasies there was music, and yet in the very beginning when they are showing her backstory there is also music...
