Let's get the fat out of the way quick so we can get to the meat: "Shutter Island" is in my opinion the best Martin Scorsese has done since "Casino" and a career high for Leonardo DiCaprio. After the thematic disapointment of "Gangs of New York", a tepid highlight reel that was "The Aviator" and the wealth of overpraisement for "The Departed", the director and his current muse have hit paydirt on their 4th try. Re: Shutter Island

saw this last night, pretty damn confusing up until the end. it was pretty good stuff, wasn't as amazing as alot of people made it out to be, but very good overall.

Re: Shutter Island

Previews didn't look good to me...which surprised me naturally given the top cast/director.

Re: Shutter Island

It wasn't terrible, it's one of Scorsese's most commercial efforts since Cape Fear. It was a bit too long and muddled to lead up to the last 20 minutes, but it's still very watchable, simply because you're watching a master at work, even it seems like he's screwing around a lot.

Check this out:

So the part with the chick drinking the glass of water really threw me, as it was obvious it was there one second, and then not another. Ebert thinks it was a continuity error. No way, that is way too obvious for Scorsese not to miss.

Q. In "Shutter Island" I noticed something odd. About mid-way through the movie, the Leo DiCaprio character is interviewing a female patient. His partner Chuck gives her a glass of water. At first she only pantomimes drinking the water, then in the next shot you see her putting down an empty glass. When at last she leaves the table, the glass is shown half full. I assume that Scorsese did this intentionally and that it isn't a blooper, but my movie/symbolism vocabulary is not such that I could interpret the meaning. B

A. It may mean that all perceived reality is deceptive. On the other hand, I think it's more likely it's a continuity error.

Re: Shutter Island

Yeah, the missing glass incident happens with a bunch of other things - people holding pencils, other items on desks being moved around from the perspective of various camera angles. I saw it as being a sign of the "unreliable narrator", sort of like Ed Norton's character in Fight Club and his constantly changing surroundings.

Re: Shutter Island

^exactly. I'm not sure why someone of Eberts experience would think it was a continuity error?

Re: Shutter Island

As esteemed as Ebert is with film critics - he is still very capable of missing the point. Read his review of Fight Club to get an example; he sees it as a very malignant, pointless movie. For a lot of people (myself included) it's a film that captures the frustrations of a generation.

Re: Shutter Island

This was a pretty trippy psychological thriller... I think it pulls at certain parts of your psyche for different reasons...

I felt a bit insulted by the mere shock factor in many of the scenes that would make anyone want to look away...but like highsteppa says, you're watching a master at work, there's no question about it from the very beginning...

I kept thinking it was a deeper and obviously bloodier version of Revolutionary Road, just about the whole time.

Lastly, much of it was predictable I thought... but I guess that's just a part of getting older

Re: Shutter Island

Pretty enjoyable movie. There are some pretty horrific scenes though! I had read the book first so was aware of what was going to happen and noticed lots of things during the movie that substantiate what happens in the end. :what

The final quote is a bit of a headfuck...

Re: Shutter Island

quite liked the film. I didn't think it was that shocking to be honest. I know what you mean about continuity i noticed that as well but I thought it was all to do with how the main character is perceiving things...to give clues into his own...psyche. Anyway, i felt the ending was kind of predictable. As soon as the film started...first scene on the boat I knew what was gonna be the end...still I enjoyed the ride.

Good film...better than some other Scorsese's films which I will not mention so as to keep the thread on topic.

Re: Shutter Island

Loved this movie... did not find it predictable in the least. Perhaps I was the only one who did not know how it was going to end??

Re: Shutter Island

Bit predictable tbh, even when i saw the trailer a few months ago i guessed what was up.

Still not a bad flick though.

Re: Shutter Island

finally saw this. Agree with many of the comments above.

Did you notice that many (several?) of the shots appeared to be clearly live chrs against a backdrop - aka fake and/or poor qulaity. Was that part of the "reality" plot, or just some weird production issues again? During the film I defo thought, poor camera work, but at the conclusion re-assessed to think it fit the characterization.
