watched this a while back, good movie. kathryn bigelow is a very good action movie director, i wish she got more credit. strange days is a freaking awesome action movie and the handcam stuff she did in the opening scene was groundbreaking back in the 90s when they did it.

It deserves the recognition it's getting - Katheryn Bigelow really put together a very stylish, very suspenseful and very passionate film that puts a lot of the other films that were set in Iraq to shame. It's not really making a statement about the Iraq war, nor about the reasons behind the war - it's looking at the motivations of the players that are involved and how they can interact with each other. Anthony Mackie did a great supporting job as a by the book, procedure adhering soldier who's got to keep lookout for the bomb disposal handler. Jeremy Renner gave in a much more complex performance than what would have been portrayed as an adrenaline junkie - examining his conflicted nature between the family he loves and should want to get back to, but his inability to do figure out what to do with himself if he goes back to civilian life.

The opening scene, the UN bomb disarmament sequence, the sniper battle and the interactions btwn the soldiers during their downtime (including the beating up on each other while drunk), all are a lot more show than tell. There's a lot more going on underneath with minimal dialogue to tell us what the director is capable of showing us, just by showing a little skill behind the camera.

It's crazy to think that 1 million Iraqis have died since the Invasion. Boy that number sure makes Saddams 20,000 he gassed as almost insignificant.

I've always loved Strange Days since it came out back in the 90s. I posted about it here if you want a bit more info:

Its one of my fav movies. Its a good action/scifi/mystery movie and has a good number of good actors in it. It went by unnoticed but it is a great movie. The first person camera thing that is going on during the opening sequence was invented at the time by her and the crew working on the flick. The whole movie looks good.

I don't totally think so, when stats like the ones that have been advertised all over the media about how only three women have nominated over the entire history, they tend to vote in that direction. I think there's going to be some of that considered when the academy members were casting their votes.

Based on merit though, Bigelow has usually proven herself to be a very good director from a technical standpoint, but has sometimes been held back by some less than perfect scripts. The Hurt Locker was a script that lived up to her talents and really deserves the attention and awards that it's already won. Here's hoping she gets the Best Director nod tonight (and Best Picture, though I think Avatar might win for that).

Exactly. I was glad that didn't win, it was only nominated because of the special effects, nothing else. I liked all of the winners tonight except I wish Gabby would have won for Precious.

its a good movie, but i really didnt think it was more qualified to win an oscar than say the blind side, or maybe precious.

at some point i did think it was a bit overrated, boring at times.

A friend gave me this movie to watch a couple of weeks ago, not knowing anything about it except it had something to do with bombs and Iraq.

I watched it and I'm with RM on this one. Great camera work but that's about it.

The fact that it won the Oscar is laughable imo.

Is The Hurt Locker seriously the best thing on offer?

Hurt Locker is a really good movie, but shouldn't be an Oscar winner. A nomination is imo what it was worthy of. Avatar should have won based on the story, special effects and being the biggest box office ever at this point. I think we'll look back years from now and remember Avatar more than Hurt Locker and think why did Hurt Locker get the nod.

Politics? Hurt Locker dealt with 'real' issue while AVATAR was fluff. Also possible that because so many people were betting on AVATAR, it backfired on the academy during judging.

Box office success shouldn't be determinative of whether or not a movie is any good. For more on this, see [I]Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen[/I]. :p;)

I do agree with you that Avatar will still probably be the movie that is more remembered, because it truly was groundbreaking and will likely go down as ushering in a new era of film-making, as the Wizard of Oz did with color. As a complete film, though, it left me feeling a bit hollow.

he's not pissed, they collaborate all the time, plus they were married 20 years ago and for only 3 years.
