True, but you got to admire how well Terry Gilliam managed to adapt the book so well and kept very true to it's spirit. That and Fight Club were two amazing examples of how a director with the right vision can translate very faithfully a book that was deemed by many unfilmable.

^Saw that this morning and was thinking how crazy it'd be if this was featured in a scene in Fear and Loathing when they were fucking around in one of the casinos.

Re: Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas

i wasnt that keen when i first saw this movie - partly due to the book being superior - but its one of those films that gets better with repeat viewing.

Re: Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas

Great line from the movie...

"One of the things you learn from years of dealing with drug people, is that you can turn your back on a person, but never turn your back on a drug. Especially when it's waving a razor-sharp hunting knife in your eye."

Now that I think about it, the first time I saw The Big Lebowski I didn't get it either...it took a few watches before I was able to appreciate it, but it eventually turned into one of my all time favs... it also helped that (back in college) I had a few friends that would watch it all the time.

I have tried to watch it a couple of times and have friends that think it is rules to live by which is really bizarre (we even have a bar in Charlotte called Lebowski's) but I guess it didn't sink in with me for some reason. Maybe I will rent it soon and give it another chance.8)

Re: Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas

As much as I want to pick up the blu ray on this, I'm gonna hold out for a Criterion edition blu ray. The regular Criterion DVD kicks so much more ass than the Universal release.

Re: Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas

the first time I saw this movie I was so screwed up on xanax and pot I totally missed it. If you like this movie there is also where the buffalo roam with Bill Murray doing a pretty good job, but I say watch Gonzo the documentary

amazing writer read all his books. His articles for rolling stone about the 72 elections and US electoral politics in general are hilarious.

I thought it was great when i saw it. Good for u for returning to a classic. I'm just starting season 2 of "Six Feet Under", it was on tv in 2001.

to be honest, the first time I watched it, I wasn't impressed either... but "The Big Lebowski" has a way of growing on you...give it another chance down the road.

it's understandable that since these two films are both cult classics, they're usually hard for foreigners to appreciate. just saying.

Re: Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas

I saw this movie last weekend for the first time after many years and it's still awesome.

"We had two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a saltshaker half-full of cocaine, a whole galaxy of multi-colored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers... Also, a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of beer, a pint of raw ether, and two dozen amyls. Not that we needed all that for the trip, but once you get locked into a serious drug collection, the tendency is to push it as far as you can. The only thing that really worried me was the ether. There is nothing in the world more helpless and irresponsible and depraved than a man in the depths of an ether binge, and I knew we'd get into that rotten stuff pretty soon."

Oh boy!

Totally agree with this.. Watched this for the first time last year and I found it to be very random and with really no plot whatsoever.. Specific parts to it were hilarious but as a whole I was left with this "wtf did I just watch" feeling lol.

Lebowski is still one of my favorite films to this day since I first saw it back in high school, Bridges just plays that part way too well.

This I may give Fesr and Loathing another chance one of these days tho.

Unfortunately that was my reaction to the Rum Diary, I thought it was worse than Fear and Loathing.

Re: Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas

The Rum Diary was a snoozefest to the 159th power. Suck.
