Re: James Cameron's Avatar (2009)
ya wow, eye candy at the very least. could be amazing...
Re: James Cameron's Avatar (2009)
could and hopefully WILL be amazing
cant wait for this
Re: James Cameron's Avatar (2009)
Anything with this much hype is just destined to be terrible. IMO ;) Good films should sell themselves...?
Re: James Cameron's Avatar (2009)
it looks pretty epic. i think it could turn out to be a decent film, or on the other hand, a completely overdone fabrication. idunno.
Re: James Cameron's Avatar (2009)
I'm more than willing to give it a shot. A friend of mine saw the advance footage they screened in Amsterdam, and he said the trailers don't even come close to conveying the visuals.
Re: James Cameron's Avatar (2009)
The trailer reminds me of a better version of Final Fantasy.
Re: James Cameron's Avatar (2009)
The reviews have all been pretty positive which has surprised me somewhat. Here's one:

Re: James Cameron's Avatar (2009)
just got back from a 3D screening of the movie ... watching it in 2D will not do it any justice at all .. best to watch it in 3D or even better still watch it in IMAX 3D
the story is rather simple though but visually its really stunning in 3D and u could really tell why its the most expensive movie made to date and why James Cameron couldn't make this back then ..
go with an empty bladder though ... the movie is 3hrs long :(
story: 6/10 visuals: 10/10 i swear James Cameron had to be on some really good acid to come up with some of those stuff soundtrack: 0/10 i think it was Celine Dion when the credits were rolling :Hurl:
soundtrack: 0/10 i think it was Celine Dion when the credits were rolling :Hurl:
I'm not watching it just for that

Re: James Cameron's Avatar (2009)
OK, I really liked it.
Plot-wise it was nothing but Dances With Wolves in space but that didn't bother me. All the basic movie-plots have been done a thousand times already anyway.
Cameron really did what he's best at, amazing action (although it was all in the end) and gun porn aplenty. The world looked amazing, the detail that was put into it was stunning.
The main villain of the story was also done just right, ie they didn't even try to make him believable, he was the best all out bad over the top bad ass since Bennett in Commando.
There was one scene worthy of the embarrassment of the dance scene in Matrix Reloaded and I couldn't leave the theater fast enough when that godawful Leona Lewis end credit-song came on. It made My Heart Will Go On sound nice.
Not for everyone but I enjoyed it. Remains to be seen whether it works in 2D though.
Re: James Cameron's Avatar (2009)
seriously don't think the movie would work as well in 2D .. but the last 20mins of the movie makes sitting through 3hrs all worth it
Re: James Cameron's Avatar (2009)
^good review homegrove!!
I think i'll see this tonight...
...is it also true the 3d glasses are battery powered?
Does it matter where you sit in the theater given that its 3D?
Re: James Cameron's Avatar (2009)
The movie was quiet good, felt like 2 hours long, stunning visuals, very forward thinking, packed theater... especially for a film that ended at 1:30 am.
Re: James Cameron's Avatar (2009)
Summary: Humans try to destroy the peaceful alien planet of Pandora, which appreciates all things mystical and environmental. A new solider infiltrates the inhabitants, known as the Na’vi creatures. He is disabled in his human body but in his Avatar form he is a regular X-Men character. After learning the humble of the Na’Vi creatures, he realizes he must save Pandora from the greed-obsessed humans, not destroy it.
Review: James Cameron’s first movie since Titanic has a trite storyline with an original look — hey, you can’t get it all. Avatar is Pocahontas with a 2009 James Cameron remix. Nonetheless, the remix is so breathtaking that the undeniable typicality is forgotten once you are set in the animation that is so authentic; you would think you are watching built sets. Finally, someone has figured out how to properly use 3-D and computer-generated imagery… now if they could only add a solid script.
In the way that you don’t expect great vocals from Janet Jackson or Madonna, you can’t expect a great script from Avatar — like pop stars, this is about a production, style and an unforgettable film experience. For many critics, since the plot is low on James Cameron’s list of importance, no matter how beautiful the film is, it will still be a dud. Is all beauty and no brains a good movie? Hey, it works for Harry Potter.
As a student of history, I am a sucker for movies about the evils of colonization and human greed, no matter how recycled. Yes, Avatar is vapidly political, but it has enough sentimental punch to keep the audience invested in the Na’vi creatures, the fight for their land and an ending that is predictable about halfway through.
Cameron’s shameless use of Native American history, Apartheid and the Iraq War (one Sergeant with a Texan-like twang shouts, “Fight terror with terror!”) will always push people’s buttons. Greed, money and the need to teach people how to be “civilized” has deracinated relevant and important culture, which is Avatar’s overall commentary, regardless of how elementarily it is told.
Cameron wanted the animated characters to be as emotional as humans. In reality, the aliens have more compassion than the humans. The animated cast includes the voices of Zoe Saldana, who is turning into a sci-fi queen, and Laz Alonso.
Supposedly, Avatar is the most expensive film of all time and it shows. But with many films that have hundreds of millions of dollars slapped to it, the heart of the film loses itself in the excess. Funny thing, Avatar is about human greed and unnecessary needs, but considering the film is one of the most expensive of all time, it nearly makes Cameron’s “message” laughable. Alfre Woodard once said, “If you spend more than $40 million on a movie, it ain’t going to be about nothing.”
All of that said, Avatar is one of the best films of the year. Cameron managed to make the exorbitance work and took admirable risks in movie making. It gives a little hope that the laziness associated with CGI might come to an end because Cameron raised the bar. The good heavily outweighs the hokey.
Re: James Cameron's Avatar (2009)
^ I go to sleep in movies that have bad story lines, and yes the story itself is rather passe, but the story does not take away from the greatness of this film.
Definitely see this one on Imax 3d :)
Re: James Cameron's Avatar (2009)

^without spoiling the movie, that's not what the plot is as it relates to the main character(s) above...
Re: James Cameron's Avatar (2009)
Just back from watching this in 3D. Mind blowing experience!!
Re: James Cameron's Avatar (2009)
Hoping to see it at Imax in 3D this week
Re: James Cameron's Avatar (2009)
It's a pretty impressive film as far as technique and special effects, and does raise the game for movies that come out after this, in the aspect of 3D presentation and special effects. It manages to elevate the computer generated characters that Lord of the Rings and King Kong pulled off and brought it further, seeing that you can recognize the avatars from their faces (Sigourney Weaver's avatar looks like she would as a Na'vi) and for the motion capture work they managed to pull off as well.
Story wise, it borrows a bit from Cameron's older films - the human compound looks like an updated set of Aliens, the environmental/life is precious message comes from the Abyss, and some of the more romantic elements seem straight out of Titanic. That's not really a criticism, it's more an observation, as James Cameron makes it work, and it doesn't feel clunky, just a bit familiar.
The film is getting a bit of flack for an unremarkable set of characters, but I felt it wasn't a fair critique - Cameron manages to demonstrate three very strong female central characters that have more to do in the story than any other female character in another big budget film would. They aren't the fretting wife/love interest that disappears in the third act when the finale action starts - they actually are servicing the story quite well, and are more fleshed out than most other female roles presented this year in the sci fi genre.
It's a great film for the visual aspect, but the story is serviceable and a bit underwhelming. I guess that a film that was four years in the making was going to have too much hype to live up to in some aspects - while succeeding and exceeding expectations in the visual departments.
Re: James Cameron's Avatar (2009)
^What do you think it will gross by this time next year, total?
Re: James Cameron's Avatar (2009)

Sick review mate! You should write for a living.

Wouldn't be surprised if he does? He seems to review quite a lot of movies.
