Re: Closer

Saw this movie last night.

Be prepared for 4 absolutely stunning performances from the likes of Jude Law, Julia Roberts, Natalie Portman, and Clive Owen in this gritty and untame look at relationships, infidelity, honesty, and trust. Jude Law stars as Dan an Obits writer who falls in love with Alice (Natalie Portman) after a chance encounter on a London street. Dan's fulfillment with Alice is short-lived after his meeting with Anna played by Julia Roberts. After unknowingly setting Anna up with her future husband Larry (Clive Owen), Dan becomes relentless in his pursuit of her. The rest of the movie follows the lives of the two couples as they battle to be honestly unfaithful with their respective partners.

Jude Law exudes reluctance and desperation with such great passion that the viewer actually begins to feel sorry for him. Roberts' performance is the antithesis of the melodrama and over-the-top acting that she usually displays. I tend to stay away from Roberts' movies due to her overacting but I could not pass up this movie because of the other 3 actors and I'm glad I didn't as she was perfect as a depressed, lonely, submissive. Natalie Portman's portrayal as a stripper and her ability to be true to the screen further exemplifies why she is one of the brightest actresses in Hollywood. And Clive Owen definitely lands the pompous and manipulative role of Larry with what seems to be relative ease.

If you enjoy twisted tales of deception and like watching gritty drama then this film is definitely for you. For all of its seriousness though, there are scenes that will have you cracking up. I give this film 4 out of 5 stars and would expect to see nominations for some of the actors.

clive owen was the star, oscar worthy to say the least. law and portman were both excellent too. roberts, in my opinion, was miscast... she just didnt deliver what the role needed for me...

excellent movie though, worth watching, and should gather at least a few nominations (owen & portman both deservedly got golden globe nods) come oscar time

went and saw this movie tonight with my lady. very interesting. i'm glad there was no huge plot twist or gore. this movie didnt need it. i felt bad for dan (jude law) at the end, and my girl was like "fuck him" she enjoyed it as well. i found a new respect for julia roberts too. she's usually the american sweetheart in a movie, but this movie she was just a good old fashioned whore. :D oh, and i wouldnt mind giving Ms. Portman some of my sperm either. :Naughty:

overall rating: 4/5
if anyone is addicted to the theme song like i am, this is it 'damien rice - the blowers daughter'
I was yes but after listening to it again its ok not a great cover..
No, don't get me wrong, I liked the guy's voice, etc. You're right that it wasn't a great cover, but he definitely has talent. I was just asking because I couldn't remember if it was you that originally told me about him and I haven't run into too many people that are touting his work.

#345132Post 20 of 36

^yeah he's got a great voice..well i try to recommend artists who have amazing song writing and vocal talents in general..

Id like to see him crack america ...id also like to know how many copies he sold of his album O as i said its being selling here for like 4-5years now..

#353952Post 23 of 36

I saw it last niht.Very very good IMO.As everyone has said, four great performances from the leads. It went on a bit I thought, but was a very 'real' film.Very enjoyable.

Re: Closer

it's a movie that must be seen. Jude law...a great performance, so Julia roberts. i found it not so complicated, but yet so interesting. It will keep your mind wide open, and will think a lot about it, but it is simple and that amazes me! good film...and i must admit that i got few errections also... :D

#357848Post 25 of 36

it touches on an insecurity that a lot of people feel daily. my gf asks me almost every other day when it'll be on dvd. we both really want to see it again.

#357918Post 26 of 36

^ ah yes the same here but as i said my gf didnt like it as much cause it wasnt really a happy film..more of a real film,..

great movie though

#361171Post 27 of 36

In a word Boooooooooooooorrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrriiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiinnnnnnnnnnnnnngggggggggggg!! In a few more words...I guess this is what happens when a successful stage writer tries to make it in the film industry, pass me a pillow.

#361179Post 28 of 36

I saw this one the last week. I liked it a lot. Good performances of the four actors. Clive Owens the best i think. Julia was really really beautiful, Portman was great too... Nice stories, the obsessions, the love, the atracction... Om

Re: Closer

I saw this movie yesterday, and it does have a "play" feel to it. Closer is not a feel-good movie, but it is a movie about choices and human nature. I did not feel as if this movie promoted adultery or unfaithfulness, rather it showed the consequences of it. I am so glad that I have never chosen to go there. .Any theatre actor would enjoy seeing Portman, Roberts, Owen and Law doing their craft. They did a good job.

Re: Closer

Natalie's asre....YUMMY!!!! Oh ya wasn't a bad film either...parts at least...

#536043Post 32 of 36

Re: Closer

Fuck this movie is good! As usual, I am at least a year behind the times, but I finally was lucky enough to stumble across this gem on cable. Everything you guys said is true.

I loved the play style-- only 4 charcters have speaking parts, and most of the time only 2 of them are on screen. There is almost no action in the narrative, just the messy fallout with succent and powerful dialogue.

Above all Clive Owen stole the show for me. He does have some tremendous lines... "Because I'm a fucking caveman!" and "Thank for your honesty. Now fuck off and die" Now that is what I'm talking about.

I also really liked how the movie in my opinion started off rather slowly and gradually built up momentem as the twistedness grows to a boil. Again, very little action, no special effect, just about as far as you can get from typical hollywood shit.

4.5/5

Re: Closer

I saw this one last night, all those who did not like "Eternal Sunshine of a spotless Mind" would hate this movie simply because of how much in time it jumps around.

It's well directed with mismatched sequences resulting in extreme twists to the plot.... brilliantly made.... Casting was good, though I thought they could have picked up someone with an English accent for Julia Roberts role..... 2 American women fighting over 2 British men was really really movie-like, esp since they both wound up in UK loving the same men.

It would have been an interesting setup if Portman made it over the pond and ruined the lives of the other 3, only to fly back an un-named person. Now THAT would have been a sick plot.

Thought I will give it a 7 / 10

(ps: ska, just saw your review and its up on the blog :p )

Re: Closer

just got done watching it and I'll give it 3 of 5 pickles.great acting, but the story just went by way too long and slow. reminded me a lot of Sideways

Closer: 3 of 5 pickles. Natalie's ass: 6 of 5 pickles. Camera getting the wrong angle to Natalie's snatch: 0 pickles
