i didn't think it was all that bad. but then again since he directed Heat he might be getting a bit of a pass from me on it though. :)

Re: Public Enemies

Yeah "Heat" is on my top 50 for sure... Also, have you seen "Manhunter"? Its the original Hannibal movie...its pretty good as well and lets face it "collateral" wasn't half bad at all...with Oakenfolds music blasting out the speakers in the background :)

Yeah, I kind of liked Miami Vice - more for the stunning visuals (which look incredible in HD). I also had a soft spot for the episodes the movie was based on, "Smuggler's Blues". Even below average from Mann is way more beautiful than 80% of the films out there as far as look goes.

Watched Manhunter a long time ago but I remember it was pretty good. The crazy ass creepy tall guy who is in movies here and there helped make it a good flick.

I thought collateral wasn't bad either, that one scene where tom cruise dealt with those drug dealers was pretty hardcore.

Yes, the cinematography with all of the boats crusing over the water, and the scene gunfight in the trailer park, and the big gunfight at the end are great to watch, he always has great camera work.

Re: Public Enemies

2.5 stars imo very :| the dialogue was very quiet and no plot to speak of, quiet the yawner. Wasn't expecting much, but didn't get much either...Collateral makes this movie look like crap, if that tells you anything

Re: Public Enemies

I was kind of disappointed with Public Enemies - not with the choice of simply recounting the last 18 or so months in Dillinger's life, but more because the use of HD cameras seemed like an inappropriate format for the film to be shot in. It sometimes feels like you're watching the action through a CCTV security camera, and there's no real context to who a lot of the people are that are coming and going throughout the film.

I didn't mind the lack of insight and explaining motivation for both Dillinger's and Purvis' characters, it's more a historical document than a character study. And, there are some absolutely great moments in the film itself. It's just a shame that the parts don't add up into a great movie like this should have been. It's a bit of a disappointing film coming from Michael Mann.

great insight, thanks, you're comment sums it up well...I think Mann took what worked in Heat and tried to apply the same formula to PE, and it just did not work. I was lost from the beginning as the criminals spoke under their breath to each other (as criminals would) I was left unable to hear wtf they were saying...anyone else?

About a quarter of the way in I sat there thinking, damn-it they got me...this is low-budge.

Re: Public Enemies

had high expectations of this considering the cast and the subject matter... but yea, i didnt really know about it until a week after it was already in theatres... dont know if thats because i rarely watch tv or their marketing campaign was just not there.

seeing as the reviews so far, both here and major reviews, are pretty crappy.. think i will miss this. sad as it looked, at least from the trailer, the 1 good summer movie i wanted to actually see in theatres :(

I was also unable to hear what they were saying ... I complained to the staff of Village Cinemas as I was definitely sure that the sound settings in the theatre were not right.

On the other hand I found the use of HD superb, although some experts claim you don't actually gain too much in quality with it. (HD video contains roughly 2 million pixels (1080x1920) while film contains roughly 12 million ...?)

Yeah the sound was pretty shite too. I'll be interested to read the subtitles of what's being said on DVD.

For the most part, you summed it up. Borrows heavily from Heat with the shootout and the confrontation of two characters, but Public Enemies never felt like the epic saga that Heat delivered so well.

Re: Public Enemies

The whole thing was a huge disappointment. With no redeeming features. Super!

Re: Public Enemies

the film was a big meh...nothing special...depp on target as always...bale was ok...but the story line and the whole romanticism business was pretty shit...or forgettable to say the least. Def not worth the cinema ticket.

Re: Public Enemies

i like dark, brooding and slow movies though. does this qualify, or is it a bust?

Re: Public Enemies

Ya I must agree with most of the comments here. It opened in SA today and my mom and I went to see it as a birthday present for me. The sound was crap and after the movie I complained to management. Now reading the comments about the sound it makes sense. Depp on the money, Bale - mewh 5/10
