"A sex-addicted con-man pays for his mother's hospital bills by playing on the sympathies of those who rescue him from choking to death"

Not all that bad objectively speaking but I was personally disappointed. Honestly, I was expecting it to be more outrageous.

Yup, so bad, I've been trying to remember what I watched over the weekend so I could tell my colleague how bad it was, and couldn't remember the name til I saw this thread!

Re: Choke 2008

I saw this back when it was unveiled at Sundance in 2007. It was definintely pretty risque back back before the MPAA got it's hands on it. Hopefully they'll release the uncensored version when it comes out on DVD.

There were some funny moments, but generally left me with a 'so what' feeling when I felt it could've done better? We have a guy who is a sex addict, and he has some mummy issues which is linked. I thought the flashbacks were good, really enjoyed Anjelica Houston in this. But the rest of the story, the psycho chick and him being a clone of Jesus could've been pushed more, those scenes in the old American town or whatever were just a waste of time, that building something out of stone was pretty random, the stripper sprouting that stuff from the Bible was pretty random, felt like something from Wayne's World. :NotMe:

Re: Choke 2008

What a disappointment, and I even gave it the benefit of low expectations, seeing as the book was pretty uneven (the book had some trademark hilarious and twisted Chuck Palahniuk moments, but it had some really random elements to it, and a pretty rushed ending). The film itself didn't have the passion/contempt or the manic, angry energy that his other books usually have

It says something to me too when the DVD commentary track even has Palahniuk himself saying that he told the director to stray from the actual book itself, just so he could have something unexpected to watch.

If they do get around to making Survivor or Invisible Monsters like they've been saying they've wanted to for the last few years, they really need someone who can invest themselves into the material the way that David Fincher did when he made Fight Club - which is tough, considering he made a movie from a book that was deemed nearly unfilmable when it was first being optioned.

Re: Choke 2008

I was sooo excited to see this, because I have read most of his books. And I thought it wasn't as good as the book, but I still dug it! I agree though, they pushed the ending.
