Re: Berlin Calling

Heard the soundtrack is pretty decent.

Too bad in Peru or Mexico hardly any movie theater will screen it:(

Has anybody seen it:?:

Re: Berlin Calling

there's one coming out called "Speaking In Code" that sounds like it could be pretty good. Check out Feiern too. Not a bad documentary, but no where near worth the $40 bucks I spent on it.

Re: Berlin Calling

I've spotted this one about two-three months ago and I'm very looking forward to watching it, but there are no specific details on the site about worldwide release.

Re: Berlin Calling

Wow .. that looks amazing !

Plus the soundtrack will be very cool.

#1155680Post 14 of 46

Re: Berlin Calling

yeah they are pretty vague about specifics. Which i totally understand for such a small group of people that are trying to push this film. They don't wanna piss people off by saying one thing and then another happening. It'll probably be in LA and NYC in March and then other parts of the country in April or May, which is usually the thing that happens for such a small release.

Re: Berlin Calling

So I caught Berlin Calling last night and it was great, I think a lot of you guys on here will enjoy the film. Sound at the cinema was much better than I expected and took everyone by surprise when the bass kicked in.

Berlin Calling follows Ickarus as he tries to finish his album, took a pill with PMA which triggered a breakdown in him, his time in rehab, and recovery, and the completion of the album. It's as much a 'making of' and a descent into personal hell and subsequent recovery, his personal journey parralling the 'making of and completion' his album.

I didn't think it pandered to cliches or stereotypes associated with such a premise and scene (I'm thinking of Human Traffic and Go). There was no moral message about drugs being bad for you, etc; the film pretty much put the character in situations and told the story as is; it might just as well be some dude fucking up his life with alcohol. What was enjoyable and refreshing for a film like that was how close it was to the music, it's almost like a behind the scenes in the making of an album.

Most of the party scenes didn't feel set up, they looked like they had a lone camera man on stage filming as opposed to a scene in the movie that had multiple camera angles. So there was a slight documentary feel to it too. I did expect more club scenes because most of the scenes looked like big parties, open air parties, and one particular after hours scene looked great, it looked like some cabin in the middle of nowhere.

I think what really delivered in the film was Paul Kalkbrenner whose acting was seriously, surprisingly good (for a DJ!). A film like that, Kalkbrenner really imbued it with his passion for the music, and the shit he went through in the film didn't feel out of place or contrived, and he made it relatable for the audience (or me anyway, having been in the party scene and my own shit with drugs). The scenes that showed him flailing his limbs or closing his eyes with a beatific smile to the music, I don't think he had to act at all, and any of us would identify with those moments.

Hope I didn't raise expectations too high, but definitely recommend checking this out.

Re: Berlin Calling

Thanks Feather. I dig your review. But the part with him dj'ing in a cabin. I think that's actually a club in Berlin around a lake or river. I've seen videos of Villalobos spinning at that place, and it really does look like a cabin. Which is amazing.

Thanks bro, I thought you and most of us here would be interested in the film so I tried to do a 'proper review' if it doesn't come round to wherever you are.

That cabin really does look cool man. Didn't look like a club at all, must be so great for after hours parties. Do you know the name of the place?

Re: Berlin Calling

Now this post totally explains the reason for "Special Berlin Calling Edit." I was curious about this when I first saw the tracklist to Sasha's December Malta liveset that had included Altes Kamuffel & my favourite Grebunn Grebunn!

this track seems like it's gonna be the best known from the film.

Lyrics:

In the night time when the world is at its rest. You will find me. In the place I know the best. Dancin shoutin. Flying to the moon. Dont have to worry. Cause Ill be come back soon.

And we build up castles in the skys and in the sand. Design our own world aint nobody understand. I found myself alive in the palm of your hand. As long as we are flyin all this world is aint got no end. All this world aint got no end.

In the daytime you will find me by your side. Trying to do my best. Trying to make things right. When it all turns wrong. There is no flow but mine. But it wont hit hard. You let me shine.

And we build a castle in the skys and in the sand. Design a own world aint nobody understand. I found myself alive in the palm of your hand. As long as we are flying all this world is aint got no end. All this world is got no end.

And we build up castles in the skys and in the sand. Design our own world aint nobody understand. I found myself alive in the palm of your hand. As long as we are flyin all this world is aint got no end. All this world aint got no end.

Re: Berlin Calling

Check out this event listing:

http://www.residentadvisor.net/event-detail.aspx?id=64135

If you were in Toronto on Sept 7, 2008, you first get a screening of Berlin Calling, and then get an after party live performance by none other than the main man, Paul Kalkbrenner. How cool is that?

Re: Berlin Calling

pretty cool

Re: Berlin Calling

Yeah Toronto has a big Film festival. That's why it was there so early with a big after show.

Re: Berlin Calling

I received an email today from some Berlin Calling group and it stated that the DVD is getting released worldwide on September 7th. Can anyone confirm or deny this release date?

Thanks!

#1250387Post 36 of 46

Re: Berlin Calling

if you check out their website, they will have all the REAL info on there bro. If it does come out on the 7th, that would be cool. I just hope it has plenty of extras.

John, have you gotten to see it yet?

Re: Berlin Calling

Alright, I give up. You can buy the European DVD version, but that won't play on an American DVD player :what

Anyone care to help me out? Thanks in advance!

#1338422Post 39 of 46

Re: Berlin Calling

Yeah they are always PAL videos over there. I have a Toshiba DVD player I got from wallyworld a few years ago that said it could play avi files, and later found out it could play PAL videos too. (Model SD-3990)

At one time I had a full version of it with hardcoded subtitles and now can't find it.
