Back in the late ’80s, Randy “The Ram” Robinson (Mickey Rourke) was a headlining professional wrestler. Now, twenty years later, he ekes out a living performing for handfuls of diehard wrestling fans in high school gyms and community centers around New Jersey. Estranged from his daughter (Evan Rachel Wood) and unable to sustain any real relationships, Randy lives for the thrill of the show and the adoration of his fans. However, a heart attack forces him into retirement. As his sense of identity starts to slip away, he begins to evaluate the state of his life ...

Re: The Wrestler

Probably won't see the movie -- never been a big Mickey Rourke fan -- but props to Marisa Tomei, who looks fantastic in it for a 44 year old. NSFW caps from the movie here.

Oh man she looks great with her nipples pierced. Definitely can't wait for that one. Too bad they don't let you just normally download the file. Had to do screen capture and it comes out wonderful.

Re: The Wrestler

Yeah was not aware Aronowhatever is behind this, surprised that the media reported him taking on Robocop and this went under most of the radar, even with Rourke on board.

Re: The Wrestler

Robocop??? HUH.

Re: The Wrestler

Great movie. Definitely worth the effort to go watch. Another good indy film worth watching even though its got subtitles is the Vampire flick (don't pre-judge) "Let the Right One In". You know a film is good when you don't need much dialog (subtitles) to get the story across. Its an amazing film and an art. One up above the Wrestler for best of 2008 IMHO.

Even though I am not a wrestling fan whatsoever... I really enjoyed this movie! Mickey Rourke had a truly amazing performance and I was so touched by the movie.

After seeing how great Rourke was in The Wrestler I'm excited to see his other move, Killshot which already comes out today! Have you heard of this one?

Re: The Wrestler

Would love to hear some compelling reasons why this movie is so great, I thought it was below average, maybe I need to watch it again more carefully:?:

Here is Mickey on Charlie Rose in case you are interested:

It's a great Elmore Leonard book. Elmore Leonard is one of the better American crime writers out there, and I loved Rum Punch (which was turned into Jackie Brown by Quentin Tarantino). The beginning of the book starts at the Silver Dollar here in Toronto (which is just above The Comfort Zone for the Torontonians on this board), which was a nice hat tip to my hometown.

As for a movie - it was supposed to be released back in 2004 or 2005 I think, but kept getting shelved over and over again, got numerous re-edits, and had a lot of trouble getting properly cast. Joseph Gordon Levitt's role was originally supposed to be played by Justin Timberlake (!), and Johnny Knoxville's role as a parole officer (I think) got nearly completely cut out of the movie.

I've seen a rough cut of it a few years back, and saw it around the same time that A History of Violence got released into theatres. It got shelved at that time because they were worried that it was going to get compared with History and probably savaged because it was far inferior.

So yeah, wait for video on this one, I say. What I saw a few years ago was kinda boring and having read the book didn't help my opinion of it one bit. The girl I was going out with at that time didn't care for it much either. They're probably putting this out because of Rourke's sudden comeback with Sin City and The Wrestler, hoping to cash in on his newfound success.
